Being fat is no longer something to be ashamed of.

Write a good plot that necessitates the main character being fat. Now, write one that DOESN'T, and give a good reason for the main character being fat.
Super heroes being fat makes little sense since they're usually actually doing shit. How would they get fat to begin with? How would they STAY fat? How would they continue to be relevant in their universe while being fat? They'd get tired, they'd be less able to do their job, they'd have to deal with their masses of blubber. It just doesn't work out.

You can do comedy or SoL comics with fat characters, and people do that in webcomics and newspaper comics a lot already. Throw them in action though, and it suddenly makes no sense.

Also, being overweight is a detriment to your health and no amount of screaming and teeth gnashing will prove otherwise. There are decades if not centuries of science that proves it's horrible for you, and very few people actually suffer a condition that causes them to be incapable of losing weight. Even so, why would you glorify a condition such as that when it's still a detriment to one's health.

Faith back in the 90s Valiant Comics was just "out of shape" not fucking obese, but she was along side the roided out 90s heroes.

These days though "out of shape" Faith wasn't extreme enough to make the same message work so Valiant turned her into Baron Harkonnen.
