They usually "ask" for his permission to maintain a good relationship with him, and he always "graciously" gives it because he wants to maintain a good relationship with Warner Bros. I lost a lot of respect for Gaiman after that, it seemed pedantic and childish for him to be angered about. The characters are existing in a massive verse and of course they're going to have changed and retcons because that's what a verse has when there's multiple writers including many characters.
