In art? When Romita Sr was the main artist. MJ had a pretty reasonable figure (above average boobs, not mega bazongas, and a general hourglass frame but nothing outlandish) and a very distinct, sharp face. She was distinct from other women meant to be sexy and had attribute some people might dislike (high cheekbones, thin eyes, the nose, etc).

In writing, Michilenie played her as being a much more down to earth character who was attractive but flawed and had a lot of similarities with Peter.

By the time McFarlane had his own book, MJ was a mega titty monster super duper model that nobody drew consistently. Because Spider-Man's wife HAS to be best girl because the artists/writers self-inserted as Peter.

Hell the main reason Gwen was killed off was because both writers and fans found Gwen boring and were more interested in MJ because of her fun-loving attitude she brought to Spidey's life and decided fuck it, let's kill off Gwen and MJ the main girl. from the peter's ex-dates list, I think only MJ was canonically a 9/10 beauty, the others are cute/fit at best and matter of taste, others are even average (gwen is average and the vast majorities of normal girls he dated), hell, even kitty is average cute only. oh and it's comics, we just love drawing girls beautifully

By dying, Gwen has been weirdly elevated to sainthood. I know I had this ridiculous image of Gwen as this perfect lost love before I actually read older Spider-Man material. Gwen was really kind of annoying. The two character traits that stand out the most with Gwen are "bitchy" and "weepy." She's not always bad, but when she's bad she's insufferable.
