The movie was fine as a scifi comedy. Just not as Guardians of the Galaxy. But most of what happened in the comics wasn't really his fault. Bendis made Star-Lord blonde before the movie started, he made Rocket rage at being called a raccoon, and you go back to DnA for turning Groot into a joke. Only thing you can really blame Gunn for is the costume change for Star-Lord and bringing Michael Rooker Yondu into 616, turning Star-Lord into a manchild, of course the tape recorder stuff and Ooga Chaka .

The way people feel about modern GotG is sort of like how I feel about modern Fire Emblem. It was a relatively obscure property that no one cared about but the few games that got imported were always good strategy games. The story wasn't really all that important most of the time, but the little that was there was nice and the characters were always interesting.

And then awakening came out. And everything changed.

While i really liked Awakening and consider it the best in the series, it seems like Nintendo completely missed the point of why it was liked. The relationship aspects from the series, that were only there to experience lore and strengthen troops morale, became the most important gameplay element in the game. The shipping overtook the narrative and the combat turned into press A to win. The series went from Lord of the Rings to Cliche anime series #196. And when Fates was revealed, it literally seemed like Awakening 2 Technically it was . And now we have Fire Emblem Warriors which is supposed to represent the entire series but guess what. 70% of the cast so far is Awakening/Fates characters with the exception of Marth, who's only the series mascot because he was the main lord of the first game. I'm sure Ike and Roy will also be in there due to Smash Bros, even though Roy was only there to advertise the most recent game in Japan, and Roy is one of the most forgettable Lords in the series with awful stats and a much more cooler parent.

Essentially: Awakening is to FE what the movie was to GotG and Fates is the Bendis run that tried to be like the movie but missed the point. Sorry for he rant, off topic I know...

Current GotG is good.
The teams main mission is to save part of Gamora and Draxs souls from the soul stone. It's heavily relies upon pre-Bendis GotG and even pre-DnA
Theyre also trying to solve the mystery of baby Groot and figure out why he hasn't returned to normal size which ties into Kirby-esque Groot and Giffen Groots being created by a mysterious figure who wants to use them for some reason.
It's also setting up the new cosmic Status Qyo by re-implementing the Novas and introducing the Talons as a rival policrle/law faction

The only characters without a currently ongoing plot are Peter who is the one member of the team without having stuff go wrong right now after the shit show of Bendis and Rocket has his own ongoing.
