Also rumor season for Godzila 2 is in full swing and it pisses me off because in general kaiju fans are dumb enough to eat anything up

Whenever the director says anything on twitter news sites blow it up to huge proportions

First he confirmed some practical effects for monsters and articles said suits were coming back

Then he hinted at tweaks with Godzilla's design and articles said he would look completely different even though that doesn't make sense with the established canon

Now he just posted a picture of the oxygen destroyer (not a prop, just a picture from 54') and now people are saying it's confirmed to be in Godzilla 2

I liked it. It definitely served a reboot of the american godzilla cartoon in the 70s.

It's funny that they wanted to go as far from the movie depiction of Totopolis as possible. He's actually a real hardass in the cartoon, way more than you think a nerd would be.

Like most Jeff Kline produced cartoons, it has a pro-military slant that at the same time doesn't glorify it.

I got into it through the '98 movie and '90s reruns of the old Hanna-Barbera show, which are probably two of the worst entry points into this franchise, but I pulled through.
I was always interested in oldschool monster movies, and later reading about all the themes presented in the Godzilla films just made them more interesting. The original is a great film in its own right with a huge significance in pop culture, so there's enough to appreciate about it even if one can't stand the other movies.

Same anon. I've loved Godzilla ever since I was a kid when I first saw Godzilla 2000. Watched a bunch of the older ones when they were on TV. And I really liked the first American Godzilla when I was younger, so I can't help but love it.
It helps that the cartoon was kickass.

I even still have some of the toys.

It's one of those things where time and better subsequent movies soften feelings towards it. It's not a good movie, but at the time it was the worst Godzilla movie most had seen and sort of stained the name for awhile.

It's been decades since then, and we now have two pretty good to great Godzilla movies tackling both themes of the series. So now it seems like less of an unforgivable sin and more of a "well it was just bad." Got a nice cartoon out of it too, and the series has moved on, so nothing to be upset about and you're allowed to like parts of it now.

Here's my terrible fanfic I just came up with.

The problem is that the US and Japan are supposed to be "realistic" representations of their respective governments. The US interest in Godzilla was the new elements in it's body, but they were ready to nuke Tokyo when coventional weaponry including MOPs failed to stop Godzilla. The reason why Yaguchi was a hero was because he defied the realistic approach to Godzilla and found another way. The US turning comic book villain would break the tone of how countries are displayed. Although a Japenese woman who can barely speak english can become a rising star politician so who knows.
