I'm hard-pressed to even think of a single entertaining or lighthearted moment in that show cause all I remember was:

a) Angst and flashbacks about his dead parents
b) Ward and his daddy issues
c) Faceless ninjas
d) Claire being a huge part of the plot more than in all the other series

Like the only good scene from the entire series was him fighting the drunken ninja who I later learned auditioned for the main role but got passed over for GoT guy.

That's nitpicking. It's not even 1% of his screen time. Why would you only remember a minor part of Rand's character when his main gimmick is being a quippy homeless billionaire kung-fu master who talks a lot about chi? As for the drama subplots, they need to fill that runtime somehow and Ward's subplot was better than his sister's or Colleen's. All in all, the main plot was entertaining enough and managed to somehow set up Defenders. Rand was a good casting and today you'll understand how his characterization was on-point and purposely planned when you see him interacting with the other 3.

Finn Jones is a very amateur actor. Everytime Danny has to get intense, he goes 100% "This is my serious face" and even makes his voice go all husky. When he doesn't have to be the emotional core of a scene he's serviceable, but a lot of his line reads feel a little off. It's clear he doesn't have a complete idea about who HIS Danny Rand is yet.

Not that anon, but my problem with Danny, and IF to an extent, has less to do with characterization and more to do with the overall direction/writing of the show. I've watched the show twice. You'll find that sudden plot/character developments are explained away by information that isn't made known to the viewer until that very moment. I'm not even talking about withholding info for the sake of suspense/mystery, I'm talking about outright not explaining something until the plot calls for it, all while expecting the audience to have already figured this out beforehand. It makes for a messy narrative that seems directionless. It makes it seem as if everything happens out of convenience, even though it's clear in retrospect that they had an idea as to where they're taking the characters/story.

Beyond that, it shits all over the set up made by DD by lumping Madame Gao with the Hand, only for her to go rogue on her own anyway. The silly part being that DD already went out of its way to set her up as an IF villain independent of the Hand anyway. In this regard, what's interesting is how the best parts of the show are the Meachums, Davos/Steel Serpent and yes, even Zhou Cheng as the drunken master. And you know what they all have in common? They're actually derived from IF lore. It's as if the showrunner didn't have faith in the source material and just wanted to make a DD 2.0.

Most of the things you have a problem with are probably due to the long runtime they had to fill by going all over place and doing aimless subplots just for filler. Defenders should be planned out better. I agree about the lore and the DD part but the main part I was excited about when watching IF was the introduction of the last member of the Defenders. Cage, Jessica and Matt are serious characters so if they had made Rand like in the comics it would result in a shitty team-up. So they had to make a compromise between the semi-serious source material and their need for a lighter character. Especially if they're planning on adding Frank to the roster, you can't have a whole team of scowlers and you can't suddenly change their established characters and turn them into clowns.

I'm glad it's shorter. The biggest flaw of all of the Netflix shows is that they're too damn long and drawn out considering each episode is roughly a true hour long (not a TV "hour," which is closer to 40 minutes). It slows the show's pacing to an agonizing crawl and forces contrivances to keep the plot going.

Man, the Netflix shows got really fucked over by not being able to use Gorgon. There's literally no other Hand related character barring Elektra that compares in terms of being a good face for an organization that is comprised of a bunch of faceless ninja mobs. Really the Hand stuff has been one of the weakest aspects of the Netflix series. Or at least how they chose to handle them. DD S1 was great at building the mystique. DDS2 was the downturn though. And Iron Fist made them into a joke. And tying them so closely to Danny just to tie into the Defenders was a mistake.

I can't think of a single critic I've agreed with in several years. I've enjoyed the DCEU and Netflix shows, while not enjoying Rogue One, for example.
