oh shit is that Pickle Rick?
>>
Meme's aside he's pretty close
>Self insert of writer
>Most powerful being in the world that can waste any obstacle easily
>Is usually always right about situations or people
>Everyone loves him
>His faults are sometimes not really faults
The only thing that's preventing him from going full Mary Sue is that his character isn't meant to be an ideal person to look up to. Despite always being right the show makes it very clear that he is not a good person and people who generally hang around him end up for the worse. If it weren't for this detail he would in fact be full fledged Mary Sue and unbearable.
>>
I don't think you understand what a Mary Sue is.

Rick is consistently portrayed as an asshole who hurts his family.

Lord Dominator. At least Rick has intelligence to verify the science bullshit he has, and his stuff isn't particularly amazing visually (his ship uses trash cans as the thrusters), and the stuff he has has its flaws and limitations (the portal gun can run out of energy, he can't create shit out of mid-air, he doesn't have any powerful allies/minions/etc), and he himself has flaws (alcoholism, generally being forgetful, socially awkward, etc).
Dominator, on the other hand, is just a shitty quirky teenager who just has everything she could ever need from the get-go with no explanation. She's virtually indestructible (a warmonger's ship using its full weapon capabilities couldn't scratch her), she's beautiful and uses her looks to get what she wants, she can create lava out of nothing and immobilize anyone with it or just use it as a weapon, when they use her one weakness to attack her it doesn't harm her at all and she gains ice powers for no fucking reason, she has an infinite, regenerating army of massive robots, and her ship can destroy entire planets without much issue.

There will never, ever be any character that's more of a Mary Sue than Dominator.
>>
>>94702317
You can tell the writers room was really enamored with Marceline and PB as characters and sought every opportunity to 'empower' them. Meanwhile Finn had an opposite arc, going from a indefatigable optimist ready to take on the world (while also having the power to succeed) to being made to face his limitations, naivety and shortcomings.

If it had been thought out as a coherent story-arc instead of just a sporadic treatment that came off as less as a natural progression of growth than a sadistic experiment at knocking him down a couple pegs it could have made for an interesting storyline

>Most powerful being in the world
He's been outsmarted a few times (even if it's by other ricks, that still counts), and there are times where he fears for his life.
>Is usually always right about situations or people
He's smart. That's his character. Being smart doesn't make him a Mary Sue; not to mention, he's been wrong.
>Everyone loves him
Blatantly false. Beth, Summer, Bird Person, and Squanchy are the only people who really "love" him. Morty is clearly tired of Rick's bullshit and only really hangs out with him because of cool sci-fi adventures, and several people, including some of his friends, hate him.
>His faults are sometimes not really faults
If he was a Mary Sue, he wouldn't have any. Even so, the times where his faults end up "helping" him generally still end up hurting him.
>>
>>94702556
Yeah but the conceit of the show is that all victims deserve to suffer or be killed, they make up whatever random scifi concept to make sure Rick is always validated.

She's the villain It's impossible for her to be a Mary sue. In the end all that stuff does for a villain is make it more epic when she fails, which she does. ehh, rick isn't always validated, the last episode seemed to just be a kind of a parody of the fact that any sort of superheros that actually do act like that probably would be corrupt like a lot of people in power are, and even then not all of the superheros did anything inherently wrong, the difference is that rather than also showing how Rick was right and he is amazing, it shows that he probably still did more harm then good, really doesn't care too much about his family, and is still a huge asshole, yes he prooved that the heroes were shit, but he didn't actually improve the situation, as morty said throughout the episode everything was pretty much just made to show how Rick was right about them, it wasn't help anyone but himself.

The point was that the white guy who was supposed to be the leader didn't even try and just got "triggered" and tried to run, the black guy grabbed Rick but then lost, which is understandable, but when the woman fights Rick she would have killed him and Morty if it weren't for them getting lucky. What's up with that? It's clearly some feminist garbage. Either make Rick OP or make him balanced. It shouldn't be so inconsistent.

They act like Rick is the first person to ever live his life as a nihilist. Sure he's nihilistic and wacky, but Susan Sarandon called him on his bullshit by saying that he uses his intelligence to excuse his own irresponsible behavior. If he stopped to pause for a second he could ground himself in any of his realities and find meaning in attachment, but he's too busy sucking his own dick to even consider that anyone besides himself might mean anything. Importance on a universal scale doesn't exist. You can't expect to find it on a multiversal scale. He could free himself from his own loneliness by stopping and finding meaning in his family, or anything else really. But he hasn't and he won't because he's too afraid of limiting himself to a single reality and growing up.

Like Dr. Wong said, he'd rather die (or risk death constantly) than accept that he needs to work on himself.

>Self insert of writer

Technically, this would only matter if we were talking about fanfiction. The original definition of a Mary Sue is "a character inserted into a fanfiction who is portrayed as always right, damn near perfect, and often to help the author live out a given fantasy". R&M is an original narrative, not a fanfic.

>Most powerful being in the world that can waste any obstacle easily
>Is usually always right about situations or people

Yes, that is why his character exists: to provoke conflict by being a genius amongst a universe full of idiots.

>Everyone loves him

Nope. Jerry doesn't love him. Most of the other characters in the show either don't give a shit about him or actively hate him. Only Beth, Morty, and Summer are shown to have any sort of affection for Rick -- Beth out of a desire to keep Rick in her life again, Morty and Summer because Rick takes them on crazy-ass adventures.

>His faults are sometimes not really faults

Except they are. The infamous therapist monologue explains that Rick's intelligence and aversion to self-improvement are the primary causes of his self-destructive behavior. He gets bored with "doing the work", as it were, that he goes on insane adventures throughout the universe so he can run away from the fact that he is basically bored to death of living. Not only is his nihilistic approach to life is not only rubbing off on Morty and Summer, he is actively putting their lives in danger every time he takes them on an adventure.

Rick is a character who seems perfect it you only watch the show every once in a while and barely pay attention. If you watch the show with the intent of looking past the jokes and the "holy shit" moments, you'll see that Rick is a self-destructive asshole whom only a handful of people like, mostly because those people are family.

Albeit America is Mary Sue too with her punch dimension access etc-probably only likes to use her fist because teleportation cost; the rest of the team is Mary Sue as well sans maybe Carol

Black Panther is the biggest Mary Sue of them all, his history of Mary Sue stuff is extensive.
Even Monica, also a Mary Sue and Blue Marvel struggle more.

If its not politics, he's probably Marvel's biggest Mary Sue and the panels where he defeats a Tiger God that is capable of tearing apart the embodiment of universal law is a pretty poetic acknowledgement of that
>>
I can't take it anymore. This show is just bad now. WHy did they fucking do this? Why did they make a long hotel room conversation where morty whines "it bothers me that these people don't like us"? What the fuck? This show used didn't use to be like this. This is like a single camera sitcom with cartoon violence. This is more than being mediocre and joke-less, or not as funny as the 1st season, it feels like a totally different show. I'm so bummed about this. I loved rick and morty.
>>
>>94708133
>Rick is a character who seems perfect it you only watch the show every once in a while and barely pay attention.
Probably most people here have seen the whole series so you are wrong about that.

Rick counts as a Mary Sue because all these supposed "flaws" such as disregarding his family's suffering are depicted by the shows creator as funny and deserved, and rick's own self-harm/murder sprees are laughed off with a fart joke or icecream or McDonalds or whatever.
>>
>>94707787
Rick is a bad dramatic character, but he's a really good comedic foil.
>>
>>94702202
I think that's kinda the point of his character? He's a quasi-god with his portal gun and ability to invent/do anything, but he spends his time getting wasted and dicking around.
>>
>>94708335
Except since the last season when those loses were shown to have weight. Bird Person's long explanations of wubalubadubdub, Rick's suicide attempt, Beth's breakdown at the end of season 2. None of those flaws were laughed off.
>>
>>94708395
He generally came off as more vulnerable in earlier episodes though. Like the pilot, or the gazorpazorp episode, or even Total Rickall.
>>
>>94708419
Yeah, when season 2 went sent out with NIN- Hurt, which should have been a joke, but wasn't, we should have see the writing on the wall. Rick and Morty was getting Harmon'd and there was nothing we could do to stop it.
>>
>>94708419
I guess I didn't see those as humanizing because the creators are seemingly fine with him getting away with heinous violence so casually I don't bother to apply consistency or plausibility to the character relationships.
>>
>>94708465
Towards the end of season 2 the signs were all there and now
>the creators are seemingly fine with him getting away with heinous violence so casually I don't bother to apply consistency or plausibility to the character relationships.
era of Rick and Morty is over. It's practically Bojack Horseman in this season.
>>
>>94708335

>Rick counts as a Mary Sue because all these supposed "flaws" such as disregarding his family's suffering are depicted by the shows creator as funny and deserved

Under what logic? He disregards the suffering of others because he is a self-absorbed hyper-intelligent nihilist; for him, the only reason to stop anyone from suffering is "it interferes with my being awesome".

>rick's own self-harm/murder sprees are laughed off with a fart joke or icecream or McDonalds or whatever

Aside from entertaining the audience, the entire goddamn reason for Rick being written as the guy who gets the best lines and awesome action shit is to underscore just how deeply fucked up his life is. If he weren't funny, the show wouldn't be worth watching, because we would be watching some dour asshole threaten the lives of his family for the sake of relieving his own boredom.

He's a coward. People hate him. He's not remotely attractive. The only thing he has going for him is his mind and even that's trying to fuck off most of the time.

Instead, name any superhero and you'll find some form of Mary Sue.

I mean if we apply it to all the Ricks, Mortys and their families you have to remember that the Rick of the universe this Rick is currently living in accidentally got himself and his Morty killed. So then this Rick came in and took their place.

And that was after he abandoned what was supposed to be his daughter.

And he has repeatedly reminded people this season that he doesn't care about whether his family lives or dies because he views them as infinitely replaceable.

Morty is one of the few characters that sees Rick for what he truly is and makes it a point he's not the type of guy you wanna spend time with. Jerry is more short term and just sees him as annoyance but not beyond upholding his place in the household.

I enjoy the show, but the point has always been that Rick is a terrible and unstable person to be with. The point is being around someone capable of doing just about anything isn't as fun as it sounds.

I agree with the people who say she was a sue at the beginning but not that becoming a princess furthered it (or at the very least as much as people say).

In season 1, it didn't matter how far removed she was from the situation, she would always get the last word in with "her" lesson.

Her royalty doesn't even matter except in some episodes (like when she led the trading thing, the one Spike answered did her visits for her, etc.).

I can't believe people are arguing against this.
I mean yeah he's a self-destructive alcoholic and that's a character flaw but it's not something holding him back, it's not an arc that he overcomes, it's just a quirk that makes him extra irreverant and emphasizes how little he has to care about other characters.
Vindicators III:
>my powers? Let's see, the ability to do anything, but only whenever I want.
In that episode the universe even conspires to make him right. The vindicators turn out to be easily triggered homocidal monsters.
>>
>>94716079
The thing is not that he's wrong, the thing is that him being right doesn't make him not an asshole - that was the point this latest episode made and one that Something Ricked did too, even if the guy was the devil.
>>
>>94718382
It felt like they were crossing of a checklist of what people praised about the last season.
>Rick is a badass, check
>there's some sort of nihilistic lesson
>Gore
It felt contrived how they got there. Maybe because characters kept referencing it in their dialogue. That's always annoying.
>>
>>94718537
People still suffer for his problems though. A Mary Sue, everyone loves them, and nothing bad ever happens to them or those who follow them.

>it's not something holding him back
Unity.

>it's not an arc that he overcomes
Because he never has a revelation that it's destroying him, it's his method to escape what he knows.

>it's just a quirk that makes him extra irreverent and emphasizes how little he has to care about other characters.
Exactly, that's always been what he was about. Smartest guy in the universe, he knows things other people will never understand, and by doing so he is a nihilist seeking only to further himself with the limited time has has left.

It very much is. It may not be explicit or immediate, but it's. Rick is clearly not satisfied with his life, otherwise he wouldn't be drinking himself into oblivion.

Actually, one of the writers said that Dominator designed and built her robots, suit and ship herself, and is self-taught.

https://suspendersofdisbelief.tumblr.com/post/126187443506/does-dominator-have-any-academicengineering

Also, a Mary Sue, which most people on here seem to have forgot, is an idealized and perfect character with no meaningful character flaws. Dominator, who was shown to be incredibly lonely in the series finale, falls out of the Mary Sue criteria, because a real Mary Sue would be completely happy destroying galaxies all alone and would have no desire for companionship and the intellectual stimulation derived from interaction with others, and would thus be an ultra-efficient force of nature, and not a playground bully.

The same thing applies to Rick, too. He's not a Mary Sue, because he's a depressed, suicidal, alcoholic wreck of a man that believes himself to be utterly and completely meaningless in the grand scheme of the multiverse.

Are both these characters absurdly powerful? Yes. Are they Mary Sues? No. They're both fucked in their own ways. Being an overpowered character and being a Mary Sue are different.
>>

>using a scythe which is supposedly one of the harder weapons to master
>"lol i built it myself"
>possible edgy parent backstory
>niece of a renowned fighter
>silver eyes which are supposedly rare
>edgy color scheme

Then the show, possibly inadvertently, went out of its way to show that she was not only NOT a Mary Sue, but severely outclassed by mostly everyone else

>was rarely ever in the know about any of the bullshit going on until it was too late
>never won a fight solo without outside intervention
>shit aim with her sniper rifle
>wasn't even the strongest team in her year
>wasnt even the strongest on her team despite being the leader, likely out of nepotism
>gets her shit kicked in by Torchwick 3 times (Blake did too but quickly got her revenge)
>is useless without team attacks
>survived completely on luck every time she was about to die
>got her uncle, who wouldve been fine without her intervention, nearly killed
>"This is my fight too!" and couldn't even land a hit
>was shown to be stupid and airheaded numerous times
>couldn't recognize Cinder even though she fought her TWICE
>couldn't figure out Penny was a robot (wasnt even a twist)
>never thinks to assemble her teammates until its too late
>cant even use her super speed correctly and gets her shit kicked in when using it against someone with normal speed
>has no idea what she's doing plotwise, literally just heading in a vague direction and dragging 4 people along for the ride, injuring 2 and nearly killing 1

The only thing going for her was her Silver Eyes, but even a point blank shot with that only gave a Cinder a small scar and a couple of weeks of a sore throat.

It seemed like the show WANTED her to be one, but then either changed their mind or forgot how to write one

Alright so anyone who does anything is a Mary Sue, gotcha. You can blame the early princess transformation on merchandising, but where's the Mary Sue in a character that once roamed the neighborhood stalking little children and harassing them over dolls because she was falling apart over the prospect of an exam or who was ignored and shat on when she was accusing her brother's fiancee of being a bitch. Which I mean she turned out to be right but if she was a Mary Sue don't you think everyone would have immediately listened to her and trusted her implicitly?

You niggers need to learn the difference between a central character and a Mary Sue. Go look at the difference between Luke motherfucking Skywalker and that Rey girl from Force Awakens who is Force-sensitive, speaks Wookiee, knows how to use a lightsaber with no training, is super good at tech stuff, etc, etc, etc.

People can only hope to glimpse at the further splitting-off of timelines in which I happens to succeed in the weighted possibilities of lethal outcomes with their livers. Their livers, Morty. Do you ge*eeer*'t that??

What is des*eeerp*cribed here highlights one respect in which the "multiple universes" terminology is inadequate. The viewer as observer never encounters any barrier or locally distinguishing boundary between one universe and another. It is only ever an approximation to speak of things happening "in a universe." In reality the "universes" forms a part of a larger object which has yet to be given a proper geometrical description but which, according to quantum theory, is the real arena in which things happen.

We don't need eyes where we're go*uuuURP*ing, Morty, only a strong tolerance for alcohol.
