Yeah, I'm wrong, I was blending two story arcs in my mind. It wasn't the original Extremis Arc, but there was a follow up where MAndarin is attemping to distribute Extremis to the entire planet, and he has his rings fused into his spine so he can't be disarmed without getting Bane'd (This was back when Tony was Director of SHIELD)

I think the last time 616 Mandarin proper showed up was in Fraction's run where he had Tony and Zeke Stane build giant Octobots for each of his rings.

The rings showed up in Gillen's run. An alien AI leeched into the Rings and transferred a hatred of Tony Stark into each.
The rings then split up and found different bearers, all of whom had their own grudges against Tony, they then fucked with their minds and turned them into 10 different supervillains.
But then one of the Mandarins started hunting down his compatriots and stealing their rings.

After that a version of Mandarin showed up in Secret Wars in the Masters of Kung Fu mini. This version was combined with Fu Manchu, the father of Shang-Chi, and king/Baron of K'un-Lun.
The 10 rings in this version were martial arts techniques that gave powers. So all of the students in his martial arts school had a version of at least one of the rings and Shang-Chi mastered them all

The Mandarin is interesting. He's kind of the answer to the question, "what if someone had Iron Fist's skill at mystic chi amping, and Iron Man's brains?" Why is someone with Tony Stark's brains and Iron Fist's skills not a bigger deal?
