I'm on board with you on just about all counts, and I think by and large /vld/ is too. We're guaranteed to get a lot more Pidge in season 4, and while I agree Hunk did basically nothing for this whole season, I felt like the scenes we got with him were more enjoyable than usual. He's a likable character when they're not constantly making food and vomit jokes.

The going theory with Shiro is that the one that broke out of the galra ship this season is a clone. He's referred to as "specimen number[something]", sees that other, dead-eyed Shiro on an operating table, and something called "project kuron" is mentioned. "Kuron" is literally "clone" in Japanese. We suspect his memories are being stored in his arm, which might also be a monitoring device of some sort.

There's some debate as to who is responsible for this. Lotor makes the most sense, as I imagine things in seasons 1 and 2 would have gone pretty differently if Zarkon had had a spying device (other than the black lion) in the midst of the paladins. It would also explain why, in the scene where Keith was trying to decide whether to fight Lotor's comet ship or destroy the cargo ship carrying his teludav, as soon as Keith mentioned the plan to shoot the cargo ship, Lotor decided that was what he was going to do, and was BTFO when Keith did something else.

That's the main thread of speculation we been doing on here, though I'm sure I missed plenty of stuff. Got any thoughts?

So much time passes irl between major scenes that focus on Shiro's plot arc that I have completely forgotten almost everything about him, and his current arc is hopelessly confusing to me. Exposition dumping for episode 1 is just bad writing, no matter how much anime does it. Which isn't to say that vld's episode 1 was an example of masterful plotting and pacing, just that throwing a 10,000 year old backstory at us full of characters we'd never met before and who were not the main characters would have been far worse. Episode 7 was more enjoyable for a lot of people because we'd already met Zarkon and Haggar in the present day, as antagonists.

But when Shiro unlocks memories, they're things that allow him to defeat robeasts, free prisoners, etc, which is shit I doubt Zarkon (or anyone in the regime) wants him doing. They're small losses, but still. Recalling memories to defeat the first robeast was the first big step in Voltron being properly piloted, and then we have a whole second season about Zarkon trying to sever Shiro's lion connection, which was only bolstered by the missions that those 'downloaded' memories made successful. Lion bond affects Lotor's plans as well, so again, why give Team Voltron any advantages, or at least let them go on for this long?

On the other hand, Shiro suddenly recalling Ulaz and the pointed suggestion that memories could be artificially implanted through his arm in S2 does stand out. I could buy that their interactions with the Blade of Marmora could somehow be orchestrated by Lotor. I get the feeling that the show's actual direction will be some odd and slightly messy mix of several theories, so everyone will be right and wrong anyway due to both over and underestimating it.

Oh, I do think cloning is likely, and don't really buy S1/2 Shiro being the actual clone (if Keith seems to be picking up on something wrong with "Shiro" now but not before, isn't it more likely the first Shiro was real? But memory controlled through the arm is still possible). I just wanted to nitpick and say that I don't think those flashbacks were deliberately uploaded memories. OK this is actually interesting. The Japanese subs spell/pronounce "Kuron" as オペレーション・クーロン (Operaishon Kuuron) with stronger emphasis on the Kuu part. Whereas listening to it in English it's clearly pronounced more like クローン (Kuroon) with emphasis on the second syllable.

I'm guessing it's because it would've been way too obvious if they spelled it the same way as it was pronounced in English because then the transliteration would be オペレーション・クローン which is straight up how you would say "Operation Clone" in Japanese.
