And a winner is you, Capeworld!
A very closed contest this time, really intense!

And now we have to decide for a theme on the fourth challenge. The new decided rules were to let the winner decide on the next challenge's theme, but we may be a bit on a rush again because it has been too long. What will be decided then?

As for the theme of the new challenge would magic work as a theme? Some guys were mentioned it last thread. Just magic anything. Gods, top hats and rabbits, spellbooks, wizards, anything magic.

I think magic would be fine for a theme. Btw I had the doubt on the previous thread if we should get rid of the "genres" option altogether or not. What do you think?

what would you do if your comic got put on the bad webcomics wiki? should you an hero?
>>
>>94670943
I think we should stick with a genre each challenge to keep things interesting and encourage everyone entering to try thinking outside the box. Getting to choose the next theme is also a neat little prize for the winner.

>>94671090
Buck up and try to do better. At the very least the notoriety is free advertising and if I really make an effort to listen to criticism and do better people could like me as an underdog.

Seems there has been some mixing with genre and theme lately, sorry about that.

Yeah I guess we could try just deciding genres via rolling this time and see how it goes. Let's just hope we don't get kinda boring ones again.

The only bad guys that have shown up in my stuff so far are Schwarz Narr an evil Nazi SS clown spider cyborg and a soldier named Karl.

Karl's story is meant to be a take on how frightening it is to be a rando bad guy fighting a physics breaking superhero. He' just a German soldier that's had the bad luck to run up against a superhuman.

Schwarz Narr is SS who got MORE fucked up by being turned into a cyborg because he was one of the first Germany created. He's the fear of omnipresent technology and industrial dehumanization embodied. He can plug into his giant siege airship Vaterland III and control it like a spider in its web. He likes spying on his crew, especially when they sleep. He finds watching humans soothing like watching fish swim in an aquarium. After the war he wants to upgrade his "body" into a city and if the Nazis didn't have the Allies to worry about they'd be worrying about that.

He's lost the ability to cognitively recognize the difference between people and objects. He likes collecting things-ruined aicraft and human bodies are at the top of his list.

Basically what I'm trying to say is that good bad guys do their job in the narrative. Shwarz Narr does his job being something the hero is afraid of and Karl does his job being someone afraid of the hero.
>>
>>94674271
There's some truth to this. Being "quirky" and "weird" is often seen as cute and endearing in girls but creepy and antisocial in boys.

Think of old screwball comedies. The guys are straight men, the girls are eccentric. I can't think of any major screwball comedy to ever do it the other way around.

I've finally been inspired to start my very own webcomic after seeing this thread and all the resources it has for me, but now I'm stuck with how to start the story. I have a plot outlined in my head, but the MC's personal character arc is weird and is making the beginning tough to write.

On the plus side, I finally bit the bullet and figured out how use the scanner I have
>>
>>94670943
I've said it before and I'll say it again:
the best way to do these challenges is to give something seemingly specific (for a challenge) but actually extremely interpretable (so we get a variety)
rather than a genre, it can be a simple word that seems to describe a scenario, like 'lying about where you are' or 'surprise party' where it could be an episode of full house or lethal weapon 6
>>
>>94678071
Open the comic in medias res and resolve the character establishing through a flashback. If you start writing and drawing and ask yourself how the characters ended up in that situation and what their motivations are, their origins will reveal themselves to you. Probably. Give it a shot, works for me most of the time. You can still shuffle the chapter around later.
>>
>>94677965
>What are you working on atm?

nothing, really. I mean I'm still drawing almost every day, but I'm not actually working on a webcomic. I have an outline for a trilogy of "test" comics, with an interconnected story and all, but I have far less motivation to write than I do to draw, so it'll probably be a while before I even get started on that.
>>
>>94678252
I agree.
"Vampire tits" had the best results yet. And all of them were solid not just the first place (which was pretty incredible, of course)
>>
>>94678071

Establish a pattern in the main character's life, then make an inciting event that breaks that pattern. It's an old trick, but it works.
>>
>>94678175
Well, you can draw characters at an angle and the clothing conceals the (minor) anatomy problems. Looks more refined than plenty webcomic desings I've seen. What's the story? Post more plox.
>>
>>94678280
You see, that was the original idea for the comic, since the MC is a something of a misanthrope with a grudge against the world. But because of that, the viewer would never get the chance to see the world from an unbiased point of view, and the world of the comic is different enough from ours for that to be important.
>>
>>94678309
>I have far less motivation to write than I do to draw

I have the opposite problem. I've plenty of finished and ongoing scripts but not the stamina to put them on the page...

MC is a normal dude in a world of superheroes, who has spent the last 8 years training up so he can murder his sociopath superhero brother.
MC is a paranoid good guy with a massive inferiority complex towards superheroes, and has all but dropped off the grid in order to catch his brother by surprise.

A big part of his character arc is him learning to discard his biases and hatred of all people with powers and get over his inferiority complex, but it's hard to give people a good view of the world from the POV of a homeless innawoods Batman-wannabe.

Thanks, I appreciate the bid of confidence. I still want to see how much farther I can push myself before I plateau again, though.

The comic is about Isaac (goggles kid), a teenage genius, and his constant Invader Zim-esque attempts at world domination. His foil and constant source of frustration is Angela (pic related), his next-door neighbor, who capes under the name "Lucky Rabbit". Both of them are plainly aware of each other's secret identities, but don't capitalize on it - in Isaac's case, out of a begrudging sense of honor, and in Angela's case out of a genuine desire to see him become reformed.
>>
>>94678727
My Daredevil story (featuring public domain Daredevil, not Marvel Daredevil) feature some "hero envy" themes as well.

You can take a look here for the little "Karl arc" I'm writing:http://www.capeworldcomics.com/comic/the-daredevil-4/

and

I suggest doing a perspective flip. Show the MC from the perspective or other, more well adjusted characters.

>>
>>94678926
Gettin' better every time you post.
Now look at the two right examples. See how when the face is turned, the cheek and mouth stick out, but the nose doesn't? That's one kind of face. It matches the front view on the left. But the profile view where the nose and mouth don't protrude at all, that matches more with the uppermost example, where the cheek is integrated more smoothly into the face.

>>94680175
Depends on which project. I'm listening to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPT0dZDkpe8 because I need the energy to redo some stuff. Nier/NITW soundtrack gets some hits from me or I'll put on a Mastodon album.
>>
>>94679798
I've seriously been considering doing this.

I'm "rebooting" my webcomic to be a bigger serialized story rather than 4-6 panel self contained strips like I had originally planned. I like writing the former more, and my characters were pretty much intended for those types of stories when I made them.

I have only made 2 real comic strips with my characters, and I plan on having the "rebooted" comic's story continue from one of them. my style has changed since then, so yeah.

>>94680175
sometimes I listen to sleepycast or the pizza party podcast, but I usually listen to random music on spotify or souncloud.
>>
>>94680469
I essentially had to do that for an old comic featuring these assholes but ended up leaving the project for something else. The comic strip form was constricting and It was tricky preparing strips and having the story flow how I wanted it to. I also ran into the same issue where I started doing the strips for it but the style I wanted to do them in was taking too long and was far too "clean" to the point that it just made it ugly.

Now the future bug story is something else anyway (bug dprk in space)

It always feel like wasted opportunity to not add actual bloodsucking animals as vampires to me, bats are iconic and all but even then most don't use the actual vampire bats. I guess because to most people they aren't cute. Poor bats they are cute to me.

As for the STD part, yeah seeing how they are "stick stuff on blood" related that would be a fun thing to approach yet I don't think many use the concept. I find funny how the first examples of vampires on media had them as analogies of many things (drug addiction, sex, plagues, STDs, and whatever other degenerate thing the author could think of) that are mostly lost nowadays. I would blame Twilight but I'm pretty sure that part of the vampire icon was lost even before them.

>>
>>94683212
I think it's because to most people they're fictional. they're unaware that, on the other side of the world from where vampires are in stories, there's an actual bat that drinks blood. doesn't hurt that the old european vampire stories didnt really coalesce into specific animal shit right away, they turned into a variety of animals, including wolves and clouds of flies..

But yeah I had a half-vampire character who kinda grew up on the street, didnt need human blood to live but was addicted to it, it was treated like a drug thing.. and I thought that worked well as a dynamic. plus it just looked good, she dressed like a bar girl and looked perpetually strung out on heroin

Ah yes, I remember good old Drac having a huge amount of animals to shape into (which can be related to blood if you stretch it enough), I also think vampires lost the ability to shapeshift into other animals because they would get confused with werebeasts. Technically vampires have a lot in common with werebeasts and even fairies. Vampire lore is fun.

Also that half-vampire character sounds cool, is she from a comic or another project you had?

it was supposed to be an anime. I came up with it 16 years ago and planned to wait til I was a good enough artist to do it justice. She was just a sidecharacter. She had a fullblooded vampire brother who was an effete anime cliche, who showed up to take her back to the dark side and all that.

but yeah magical shapeshifters abound. It's hard to separate them from what seems like a proper race. It doesn't help that vampires are obviously going to be naturally predisposed to just learning magic like any other sorceror
>>
>>94683656
Yeah, but I'm not aping it because of the religiosity of it, I just think Lajos's lines just capture so much of what I want to express with my girl. She's not refined or a polished work of art, but she's still has an aspect about her, as all persons do, that is deeper than surface level aesthetics.
The Title is a biblical reference, but it means get up, little girl, and that's what I want to tell her as I create her pages.

>>94683776
Very good. It looks like real storyboards. Are you an animation student?
Have you ever seen Toby Shelton's stuff? He's great too.
http://tobyshelton.blogspot.com/
>>
>>94678309
Same. Except my test comic is a protomen fancomic that isn't remotely as cool as the main narrative.
>>
>>94684004
Very cool. You've done the #1 thing a furry comic needs to do: be cool and not awkward or ungainly-looking.
SLight problems: everyone looks like the same pupper in different outfits (i get that they're all related) so until I read the text (which is slightly hard to read, but not super bad), I thought it was different events in one guy's life (briefly crossdressing, maybe to infiltrate and kill a bunch of guys?)
some markings would help with that. they're not ALL snow white puppers, right?

though I suppose, these aren't main characters are they.. this is a story the titular character is telling, describing his ancestors. so maybe it makes sense if they all look alike. I'm just saying that's what leapt out at me.

You actually hit the nail right on the head.
Yes, all the characters in this page are related. They're not main characters, and it's likely I'll draw them one more this episode, and then not again for a while.
It's hard to tell from one page, and especially since the page is a sort of introduction, but all the foreground characters are going to be 100% white except for a color motif defined by their clothing. Backgrounds are going to be limited to a palette, although not all of them are gonna be so washed and tan as it was in this page (for the flashback/recalling effect).
>>
>>94684234
Yeah, I'm struggling to grind up environment AP too. This looks really nice to me. Maybe search for photos of model homes or movie sets for reference?
>>
>>94684234
I sometimes refer to those interior design magazines or environment art from video games. You'll get a clean look from magazines but if you want to capture something more real, there's always barging into friend's rooms and taking pictures of them.

This is what my initial sketch looked like.

I just draw the people, and the form of their body gives me the idea of what the perspective should be.

Then, using a perspective ruler tool, I pick two angles of the same vanishing point; the farther apart from each other, the more accurate.

Then I check to see if it looks right. If it doesn't, I just tweak it. That's it.

>>
>>94684705
I find this to be a common problem when it comes to go from sketch to lineart. I'm not sure how it works, I think it is because sketchy lines give the illusion of dynamism. Maybe try that out? As in you already did the lineart with single strokes, now make a new layer and give it a few more so the lineart looks "sketchy" but without being an actual sketch.
>>
>>94685351

I wonder if there's something more I can do with this one. It looks kind of boring to me.

There's this thing that I see with some other artists where they can draw buildings very well detailed, but the lines aren't precise. They look more organic and may even bend a little.

I've always wanted to see how they work. My lines just follow the ruler and feel a bit soulless.
>>
>>94685417
That's an issue I had before, hence going back and drawing everything looser. It lets you sneak more texture into your environment, maybe implying wood carvings rather than painstakingly trying to make them as geometrically correct as possible. I am impressed with your backgrounds in perspective but am more interested in the characters you draw because they aren't as uh i guess stock looking as the perfect backgrounds?

You can do 2 things to make the audience more disconcerted, to feel her breakdown. One is fairly simple, the other less, going by what you've done so far. One, make her pose more manic. Close her down. Remember, the human body can be just as expressive as the face. Pardon my talentless scratches

The other option is to use a more disconcerting camera angle, a crane shot, looking down, or a lower shot looking up. These would necessitate a much larger revision.

im not that anon but i just started animation school tomorrow it's my 3rd day it's pretty nice since their plan has the students practicing the most important basic drawing stuff for months before getting to the real deal that's how i know my school is legit

i was just wondering how are your classmates? have you worked on any project together?

Apparently im the only one who has practiced animation and color theory then i have classmates really good with pencils and lines, who also admire the same people i admire

and then the last third f the class are guys who just have the highest power level i have ever seen but little to no knowledge about drawing, like damn 2 of them mentioned their gamertag before their names when they introduced themselves i shit you not one od them was wearing the most cartoony nerd outfit ever they'll sure catch up right?

im so scared of teamwork i hope if it happens i end up with someone with good lineart so i can just color everything nicely and have actual teamwork instead of having to do everything myself, like i don't care how nerd they are but this kind of people usually becomes "that guy" when they work in teams

Panel 1 - I'm not really sure what's going on with that pant-leg, is that a leg coming out? Biggest issue here for me though are the rendering of the clouds, and rendering as in how you approached making them look like clouds, which they kind of don't (are they?). Imagine if you had to draw cotton balls in this scene, how would you make them look differently?
Panel 2 is okay!
Panels 3 and 4 - Although it saves you time and effort, I'd rather forego the explanation of what just transpired and rather attempt to show it. Explaining it in panel 4 just seems kind of cheap. Although I really like the effort you're trying by differentiating the font sizes, but I think your font choices are questionable. Try to find a more suitable font - try blambot or dafont.
Panels 5 to 10 - I don't think your should include these in a page, if it happened earlier why not draw this scene before panels 1-4? Or if they're happening at relatively the same time, remove the 'earlier' and just displace this as a different page that comes after panels 1-4. Viewing the fight in different angles not only holds the interest of the reader, it helps them understand the 'moveset' of the fighting characters, and also to show the characters present.

Challenge yourself - try different camera angles and perspectives, try different panel shapes and sizes for dramatic effect.

I think your coloring is pretty good though! As well as your choice of colors in character designs.
>>
>>94698045
Your font sizes on this page are all over the place; you should keep it the same size throughout, only making it larger or smaller for emphasis.

If panel 4 was wider you'd have enough room for that dialogue to be slightly larger. Plan your dialogue and text at the layout stage, so you know how much room you'll need. At the moment it looks like you're trying to squish the text into what ever space is available after you've finished drawing, instead of making sure you have that space to begin with.

Similarly, if you're having speech balloons constantly breaking out of panels and overlapping the gutters, that's another sign you might not be leaving enough room for them within the panels.

in panel one its supposed to be a kilt. also the clouds are supposed to be smoke from a smoke bomb. in retrospect your right though about panel 4 because I could've just had him stand over Harvey as he is in panel 3 once I get to that point.

speaking of which I also did the earlier thing because I wanted to show how both the girl, Anna and the guy Harvey were fighting at the same time, with Harvey fighting the kilt guy and Anna fighting the snake girl and once she's done fighting the next guy in the next page it'll come right back after the events of panel 4 where Harvey is being threatened. but also introspect I do think I should've done 5-10 first.

The aim was to show off during the opening and then slowly lower the audience's standards in more low-effort artwork for the rest of it.
It's kind of annoying because I actually got quite a lot better at doing these panels between the first opening cover and the end of chapter 1, so the real showing off doesn't start for a couple of panels.

I think the glowing bugs and the little floating white specks really boosted the detail/texture/atmosphere of everything. They were decidedly a very good idea.

Will add my own not-asked opinion here, but this thought is one that actually came to me when I was adding some css customization to the tumblr theme in that I was worried of it not looking well on phones, and a friend said "isn't that what tapas is for?". Tapastic and webtoons are devoid of personalization, I agree on that, but as it was said in one of these posts, they are the smartphone equivalent of comic-hosts. I think they work better as mirror sites to direct people who are already users of those apps in case they want to read on the phone.

Nearly every trope, every concept, every thing has been established. It's all about what you do with them.

I'm not being contrarian against what's popular. I'm just bored of it. I'm not going to call out any specifics because I don't want this to be an argument. I'm just seeing a lot of "follow the leader" type things going on. Marvel and DC are both unstoppable industries that have been around forever and will stay around forever. The new noodle arm, neon colored "quirky" trend is also a dominant force that's largely stopped innovating. And before someone mentions that those vague descriptors have always applied, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

His proportions, his details and the fact that his eyes aren't just circles sets it apart. I don't look at it and think "Oh, he's trying to be [X]."

I don't mean to jerk this one anon off, since I'm really starting to sound like him samefagging. I just love seeing new potential arise here and it needs to be supported. I give these pep talks to everyone who are carving out their own niche because, someday, I want to read what they have.

If I had a penny for every time I had to half-way scrap a storyline I might have enough to pay for photoshop. I don't mind politics if they are done tastefully but I wanted more of a universal feel for this; maybe I should just go back to reading some more like I was supposed to do.

That cruddy moment when "Finally got the motivation" hits "neglected to plan because until now I lacked the motivation"
>>
>>94706468
Shit, I love the idea of socialists from the negaverse. The key, I think, is making it relatively apolitical by making it more about conquering and control than any particular view.. Also, giving the villains a legitimate reason to use this tactic. Like, are they trying to build a loyal army of humans to welcome their invasion? Even the so-far-left-it-makes-Mr.-Sinister-look-like-Dexter Doctor Who just did a story about that. Wasn't a very good one, but it had tons of good moments.

If they actually want to ATTACK humans or drain their energy or whatever, then yeah that particular kind of social engineering plot makes no sense. Socialism lowers the populace's energy and squanders what little they put out, so it's no good for that goal

tldr what makes villains irritatingly onedimensional is if they have no legit reason to do what they do (e.g. captain planet villains who seem to just destroy the environment for fun, burning down forests instead of actually harvesting them so they could at least make money, that kind of thing)

For the main antagonist it's all about creating a mice paradise but for humans and use it to destroy their will, his motivation comes from being both jealous of the love of God for humans and disappointed of humans for wasting their potential; other demons in the story like the more normal methods and purposes but this one runs on spite. As a side note, the lore on the girls' side is still iffy because I'm still trying to figure out a method for keeping them in the shadows and make them a tradition that's not contrived, but the demons are mostly based on abrahamanic supernatural and angel-like beings.

I'm fearing the politicization will come from him having to influence human leaders, and whatever idea or position becomes a willing actor might do it. Not even shitting on commies but they are honestly the only ones I see hoping for something like that; the mice paradise not the complete destruction of the human spirit I mean, if anything they celebrate it as any other fringe position does.
I'm trying to come up with a system that takes the worst parts of every system I'm aware of but I've been more lazy about it than what I'd like to admit.

>Even the so-far-left-it-makes-Mr.-Sinister-look-like-Dexter Doctor Who just did a story about that. Wasn't a very good one, but it had tons of good moments.

Honestly the scenario of demons influencing human leaders all over the world (all over the world, right?) makes it totally not taking sides. The idea that anyone and everyone is susceptible.

as for that episode, er... two-parter, The Pyramid at the End of the World and The Lie of the Land. Technically those are parts 2 and 3 of a 3-parter, but Extremis is kind of its own thing and isn't necessary, it just leads into it.

I need a way to show the highlights of a character's career within one (splash) page in a sort of recollection. Two pages could work too, but I'd rather keep it within one image.

Conditions:
- No inner monologue or thoughts.
- No direct narration (e.g. narrative boxes).
- It should be at least somewhat obvious what the shown events were.

I was thinking about showing it through newspaper articles, but honestly drawing newspapers properly without some shitty squiggles is a pain in the ass and I'm not a native English speaker, so it's bound to have a typo or two and misplaced punctuation. Do you have any other ideas?

Now that's interesting. If there's different sellers with sale prices at different times, that means one totally takes the sales from the other at the time. i wonder how often that kind of thing happens in retail.. or like.. whether the reseller has a limited number of serial numbers and has to actually buy more

While it depends on how rampant the fetish is in your comic, you could make the fetishy stuff as part of a side comic related to the main comic, or you could possibly post a more fetishy comic somewhere like tumblr or whatever other site allows nsfw stuff, and have edited versions other places.

I've been contemplating the same things for myself, though I'm planning on my comic having some adult themes even if the nudity and sex is edited out for some sites. I don't know if it's a good idea or not, though.

I really like your style, however, I think your designs really pull too heavily from generic fantasy. Hyena man is pretty cool, but roguish elf and plague doctor are a tad done.
I'd suggest actually going through old Illuminations and actual medieval costumes and drawing from those as well.

>Friend wants to begin a "uber but with comics" business, where they would get artists to let them print their comics in fanzines of sorts and sell them on an internet page alongside e-books.
>I graduated on editorial design so he asks me for help on getting the business done
>I tell him printing and all that is kinda shit unless he goes with big print runs
>He says "I don't want to go pro, just something cheap!", then reveals to me his idea is to pretty much buy the printing equipment (which is not cheap neither) and let the artist say how much will they charge for their 15-page BN fanzines, and let people buy something like $15 dollar BN comics plus shipment.
>The money for printing won't come from the artist, our whole business would be "we print it and get the money back from the sells, then we get actual profit from website views!", following a "people pay $200 for art on the internet so they will like this!", also they want the "every demographic" audience.
>The artist can say how much will they ask for the books to be selled, but they don't pay a dime for the printing and is mostly an "exposure" trick to get them to let us print and sell their BN small fanzines.
>Also the printing would depend from the area -since we are a bunch of international friends- and he would give us the printing money.
>I still point out the problem of this, mostly from a money perspective (what winning do I get besides my own exposure, for one?)
>They say I'm too negative and it must be me being recentful to past grudges, not the weird profit system they want to achieve.

Am I being really too negative? I really don't know. Hell it's even when I just give advice to their own comics like "hey that is a huge wall of text in a single balloon, try to segment it" or similar stuff that doesn't even go into muh style area, yet they dismiss it as "lol but I don't want to be good even if I keep saying I want to do it big!". Am I really in the wrong here?
>>
I wish I had more time to work on my comic :(
>>
>>94724678
Try and add at least two positive points before you do a negative one. Helps take the edge off if they take it as a personal attack.
>>
>>94724874
When it came to actually give criticism to their comics I did. I love most of my friends' artstyles and their humor but they make a lot of mistakes that makes their comics kinda a chore to read and I really want to see them improve, yet they don't listen and instead just give likes to the "COOL!" comments. I frankly just stopped reading their comics because even when I just had good things to say they wouldn't really give any food for thought to it. And this new business idea is just shady and not as well thought as they think it is, I don't want to see them meet an awful end when it doesn't really work. I have seen it happen to more real life business projects from family and it just hurts.

No your not wrong there needs to be more of an incentive for the creative who's doing most of the work, it could possibly work though? I mean you are doing one pretty annoying part of the business and taking that off of the artist shoulders.

>>94724874
Who the hell are you suppose to be that's not proper advice dude, sounds so robotic and shit.
>>
>>94724957
one thing you'll learn as you go through life is that most people have shit ideas. and if they have shit ideas they're most likely too stupid to realize it in the first place, but because they're your friends you try to make accommodations. There's no point, just be real with them. Imagine if dewd came to you with some business or comic advice, would you care to listen? Try to add some positives before the negatives to help him improve? Hold his dick in your hand as you try to lead him to the trough, even though he's too braindead to drink? If you answered yes then you'll continue to keep the company of these morons, and the people you spend time with inevitably become a part of you.
>>
>>94724957
He also gives me comments like "Some artists work just for love to the art which is wrong because WHAT IF THEY TOOK ALL WHAT THEY DID and sold it as a book?" which doesn't help me to accept his business model. Sure it's actually a good idea to offer a service of selling compilated comics so people can support their favorite artist, but really we have patreon and kickstarter to help artists both on a daily basis and on their printing projects. The idea could work but it is trying to mimic Uber's model too much, and once you check on your gas and car maintenance costs, it isn't as much good for a full time job.

Any business that you start to try to basically take advantage of something that already exists, without actually building anything new or offering any kind of legit service, is a business doomed to fail.. and god be praised, because if it doesn't fail it's screwing over a bunch of people and basically ruining the economy little by little. you have to add some kind of value every time you make a dollar, or you devalue the dollar. Economics is supposed to be about pulling a Jesus and moving money around and around until somehow you have 6 basketfuls more than you had when you started, because you shared it. This kind of shit is just stirring the money in an enclosed pot, and every time you complete one stir the government gets more of it.

I dunno, it works for me. You just gotta vary the delivery up sometimes. Make it seem like the praise is genuine and the criticism just popped into your head at the moment, or some other time offer the praise hesitantly, then give the criticism.

>>94726138
Basically there are people who have this thing called "drive". it used to be really common, it's becoming rarer and rarer as it increasingly doesn't lead to success, but instead misery.
But just like anything you can have wayyy too much of it, and you still see those around. My boss is one. he's constantly talking about starting new businesses where I do for a bunch of different companies what I do for him... and that's great and all, but I don't get worked up over the idea, could never do it myself, and have no investment in it.. that is how I survive
>>
>>94726332
yeah compliment sammiches are legit, though you can't make it forced. Gotta give opinions you really have, not just patronizing them.
I heard this thing lately where instead of saying 'but' you say 'and'. it sounds retarded, but the more I think about it, the more I have to agree it works.
>>
>>94726689
Yeah all he did was talk but the best he can do is poach mediocre comics and use them to generate ad revenue.
>>
>>94726713
Yeah. When you say "but", it pre-triggers someone into thinking they're going to be receiving something negative, like being denied something or being insulted, and they start preparing themselves to argue against you to get their way. If you rephrase the sentence with 'and', it catches them in a less defensive mood.

Not yet. I just came back from being on bureaucracy shit all day because being a cashier requires more papers than [insert either bureaucratical job], still not got the job because of it. I also had to stay on the bank because apparently the first time I began working they didn't make my AFORE (an account where your bosses deposit money so you can have money once you become old and can't work at all) which is government requirement so I was there setting everything in check. Then I had a long talk with my parents who told me being a cashier was not worth it for the little pay the give, and that I should focus more on my webcomic instead so I can make enough content to get accepted by the ad services and get sweet shekels. I have not been so moved in a long while by my parents.

I just think that your draftsmanship is a little hampered by the tired designs that look like they crawled out of some generic fantasy. And if your work isn't medieval, why not draw from the renaissance style of dress.
I'd have liked to show you some of Brueghel's work, but all my examples were too large.
How about this Italian fellow? He looks unique and visually interesting. You don't see this sensibility much.

Your work isn't bad at all, don't get that impression.
>>
>>94728961
I'll give it some consideration but I guess I'm caught up on also not liking the clothing of the period either. I suppose I would bite the bullet and play with it a little to get a feel for it tomorrow.

I appreciate the input and I'll commit the name to memory.

Also, Cambiaso is great. One of History's best draftsmen

Made a design for some generic cyborg alien factory workers and for fun I made a model for dupe if he were to appear in the comic ever. Doubt he will though.
>>
>>94729096
I do have great appreciation for renaissance period art though.
I think most of the aversion comes from wanting to focus on a different region's looks. The patterns intimidate me even though they're not complex but I was going to possibly ape some kyrgyz or mongol dress styles. Still up in the air.
I should keep these for reference though since some parts of the early story is pretty italian flavored.

How well do you know your characters? Can you tell me more about them? What do they do? Where are they from? Did something happen to them?

A lot of times, you will find the answer to these questions often help you determine the start of their design. Of course, it doesn't have to be dictated by practicality, but sometimes when you don't have a firm ideas to start with design, you can go from their back story and where they fit in. Of course, you can do the reverse as well, start with a character design that you really like and then invent their back story based on it.

the poor creature has one leg attached to his head and one to the side of his hip area.. that's got to hurt like crazy when he walks. Plus the hip joints of the robot legs are elevated so high that basically his body will swing like crazy as they try to take steps. what kind of factory job do they do?

well it's the same character in the same style, there's only so many improvements that can be made. I just think the slimming down and face change makes them a bit more uniform and expressive. And yeah here's some more models. Obviously the sketched ones are in very early stages.

Oh, that support isn't connected at the head. it's design is entirely symmetrical.

They work in a facility that processes computer coolant and fabricates processors. Their hands are among the most precise of any known species which is why they're not replaced with machinery like their support legs.
>>
>>94730351
you have a lot of patience making collages like this
>>94730466
oh i see it now. you did color the rear thigh strut darker so I should have noticed it was in the background compared to the head.
Also that is clever. aliens with dextrous hands and little else in the way of limbs being given a good way to look at shit and walk around to shit. makes a good factory worker. Very cool. Though it's too bad we can't really see that by looking at the hands, they seem like any ol' hands.
and there's still the fact that the near leg has a bend where the far leg straight up doesn't, but perhaps that's meant to be a kind of joint?
