Perhaps one day we may be lucky enough to load H*R videos for our grandchilds on excavated beige devices.
>>
>>94662058
Homestar Runner is this flash cartoon that existed on its own website since the pre-Youtube era. It's essentially about a character called Homestar Runner. Everyone loves him. He's a terrific athlete.

The second main character, at least the one that everybody loves is Strong Bad. Strong Bad started off as Homestar's villain, but now Homestar won't stop harassing HIM. He has a section of the website of cartoons devoted to his Strong Bad Emails, which could be said eclipsed the rest of the website.

There are almost 15-20 years worth of characters, running gags, backstories, alternate universes, games, easter eggs, and its really something that is better seen for yourself.

It's one of those things that is better if you have real people to enoy it with.

Like, it's funniest when you and your firned reference it, and look back fondly.

When playing games with my best friend, when we win a game, we constantly spout of "I said you did a good jeeeorb", and everytime a game or a show features a dragon, we always refer to them as dagrons.

tl;dr The funniest aspects are shaped through nostalgia.

I feel like the guy whose responsible for homestarrunner could have made a much better career had he stuck with it instead of focusing on his real job or whatever it was that took the attention away...it would obviously had been a big risk, but I think the internet's climate back then was ripe enough for it to really take off and lead to a lucrative self-employment kind of job.
>>
>>94665923
They never wanted to put ads on the site, and kept it going based on sales from the merchandise alone. However, babies started getting born, and they couldn't support their families off of store money alone. So they took industry jobs. That's why the updates stopped.

The fact that they ever still update shows how much they loved working on the site.
>>
>>94665923
it's made by two guys, brothers Mike and Matt Chapman. They didn't want to turn homestar into a real job because making it wouldn't be fun any more if they considered it work. They're doing fine for themselves, they've got a series of shorts they make on Disney, and Matt is getting plenty of work in voice acting.
I admire them in a lot of ways

>The fact that they ever still update shows how much they loved working on the site.
Apparently shortly after the first hiatus the brothers moved pretty far away from each other, so making a new Homestar toon was a massive undertaking that simply wasn't feasible. Now, however, they're living pretty close by (to the point they can hang out more or less every day), so they can make more toons if they so choose

its because fucking HSR is so pure and shit
it was so self contained and lasted so long on the net from the late 90s to TODAY IN 2017!

i mean, shit, leave it alone

also, RC fucking could have done some sketch WAAAAAAAAAY better than killing the HSR characters.
>>
>>94672573
perhaps they realized they couldnt do it justice or mimic the voices adequately
>>
What I'm confused about is why the Bros Chaps had so many interviews about how they were returning to H*R and getting it going again.....yet we're still only getting like 5 toons per year

sure, can't expect weekly sbemails, but more than 1 toon per 3 months would be nice
>>
>>94672676
because they are still doing lots of other shit from what i remember too, so not much time

and even THEN, this is a way better treat than killing it with quantity over quality
>>
>>94661959
Pretty lackluster desu. Not one of Stro Bro's best.
>>
>>94672676
they never promised regularity, just that they would never completely abandon it
basically you know what happened with peanuts and garfield animation where it started out as just occasional specials, but then went to full series? it's that in reverse. Homestar is now our occasional special and that's fine

True

I just wish we could get another decemberween short. I dont' mind skipping the halloween one, last years was pretty lame to be honest anyway
>>
>>94672743
better than the compé era. nice and playful. plus, quite long. you notice they prefer longer and longer toons. I Killed Pom Pom was like 10 minutes
>>
>>94673246
As much as that may be true, the fact is it isn't like HSR is some kind of big corporate property, it's a two man operation that made good, and brutal gun murder just feels petty and unbecoming.
>>
>>94674671
The compé era lasted two dang sbemails. It was barely an era.
>>
>>94675892

Not denying that, just sayin
>>
>>94675949
It was like, 5. In any case, yeah, it's not really fair to judge it, but still, it got too meta and you could tell they were getting tired. Still good, but not insta-classics.
>>94675892
yeah but that's kind of the joke. They do the same thing with strawberry shortcake and shit, they have a gummi bear getting caught in a bear trap and having to bite her leg off, it's that kind of edgy old-internet humor. You can't really look below the surface and expect depth, you've just got to laugh mildly then watch something else.

I feel like it shouldn't be that surprising but when I went to my HR folder I realized exactly one image isn't just a screencap. Kinda odd considering just how long it's been going on.
>>
>>94680949
it's just.. fanart of homestar feels weird. the fact that you can go outside of the selection of expressions and poses their sprites have.. it's like that uncanny look of all those muppets / sesame street books / cartoons. Some of them they draw really loosely and googly so they look more like the original sketches that helped design the muppets, but others they're just drawing things the puppets can't do and it's WEIRD

>mfw I realize that by watching them watching the video of Seran Cardgage, we have been cursed as well

>Is Homestar Runner the best thing to happen to the internet?
I think it's one of the top contenders for the sheer reason that it hasn't become shit yet, like almost everything else.

But the idea that this show makes me feel old is starting to scare me.
>>
When will the Stinkoman game be finished?
>>
>>94683270
The same time as the Intellivision game.

You know, if the Ataribox guys were smart they'd reach out to the Chaps and get them to finish that as an Ataribox exclusive, I guarantee that'd get them some buzz.
>>
>>94682901
see I thought the joke is how homestar couldn't really say that otherwise. it'd be towshiawy
>>
>>94683120
I believe it hasn't aired yet, it's a preview
that's why nobody understands it in context, and assumes it's just an attack

Homestar is still funny because it's humor is timeless, much like what people consider to be great cartoons, like early Simpsons or SpongeBob.

It's pretty much all-ages and relatively clean, but there's still plenty of things only adults will get. Its humor is predicated on comedic timing and legitimately funny dialog. There isn't an over-reliance on pop culture references (all of H*R's references are bizarrely old and were intentionally outdated, even when it was a constantly updated website) and instead it's just good banter. The fact that it's clean and doesn't rely on a cheap edgy gag other than the intentional balls-to-the-wall wackiness of TGS really helps it persist for a long time.

Coach Z and Bubs are a good example of characters that are amusing when you're a kid and fucking hilarious when you're older

Dangeresque is still the funniest shit to me and I would have paid good money for a more complex game like the Dangeresque puzzle game they have on the website.

When I was younger, I didn't have that many videogames, so a lot of the videogames Strong Bad made up kinda flew over my head. Like, I just thought they were fun games, if a bit repetitive or obtuse. Now that I've learned vidya history, I understand just how dead-on those parodies are.

By a similar token, the Limozeen But They're In Space sbemail was made about nine times funnier after a few hours binging Annotation Station.

also both Poker Night games also have some great Strong Bad material in them(shame we never got more of those games)
