The only thing keeping companies and services civil is the threat of patron flight, if everything is under a single monopoly, you bet that not only will services get less efficient, they'll be openly hostile.

We only had Fairpoint as an option for internet where I used to live and it took six months after paying for them to come and install it.
They'd always set up a date, and then call on that date saying they had to reschedule.

Ending up going to the newspaper with a neighbor and lo and behold, we got internet. Very shitty internet.

Actually not 100%. Companies will act like taht even if you HAVE options because so many can't be hassled to switch or just see the price and don't care that the service is stupidly worse, my parents have Cable/Internet combo package and got a fucking IP from a neighboring country that they STILL refuse to fix after complaints and reports, of course the fact my parents can't be assed to actually switch despite the options means it is all on them since the one i use operate in the same area, basically bent over backwards to fix the only issue i had ASAP, even though it was no rush for me.

Basically my point is, Companies will go into the "YOU GOTTA DEAL WITH US LIKE IT OR NOT" state of mind even if there are options provided they think they can get away with.
