Have the new writers successfully created the biggest Gary Stu in animation
>>
>>94645381
Basically, only we have to feel bad for Rick because "M-m-muh nihilist depression".
>>
>>94645381
that was always the point of the character
>>94645405
no you autist, we're supposed to feel bad for morty
>>
>>94645381
>People talk about him when he's not in the room

>Even when they hate him, they praise he's genius

>Almost everyone at odds with him is destine to die

>Insufferable narcissist that barely ever gets put in his place

>In a multiverse full of infinite Rick's he is the greatest and smartest and the one that almost always right about everything

>Can solve EVERY problem with ease , because he's better than everyone else and he sure acts like that's the case

Yes
>>
>>94645381
True but people watch Sherlock and Dr Who and they manage to praise even that uber char bs.

I liked him more in season one. It was funnier seeing him butthurt about Pirates of the Pancreas than playing 4D chess every second.
>>
Why does this show get so many to threads
>>
>>94645647
I know, right?
>>
>>94645487
Are you describing Batman?
>>
>>94645381
I mean the whole enjoyment of the show is a god going around and fucking with people.
Him not being a gary stu would be boring.
>>
>>94645381
Mary Sues//Gary Stus (stupid, redundant term) are completely without flaws, hyper-competent and beloved by every character around them. Rick is only one of those things.

Get a new fucking tune.
>>
>>94645381
>overthinking Rick and Morty
/co/ takes this shit too seriously
>>
>>94645487
You're almost there. You've almost described the joke.

Just go a little further. Come on buddy, you can do it!
>>
>>94645487
>>Can solve EVERY problem with ease , because he's better than everyone else and he sure acts like that's the case
except for the Cronenburg thing
>>
>>94645381
The Issue with Season 3 is exactly that. Rick literally can do everything and everyone else is a useless loser to him.

Maybe I just pine for Season 1, where Rick had some failures that cemented him as Human and not just a walking plot/joke device.
>>
>>94645771

Getting a bunch of people killed because you got blackout drunk isn't a failure?
>>
>>94645756
Someone is gonna fix cronenburg world for Rick, he is gonna get mad butt hurt
>>
>>94645799
Well they've already gone back to that dimension so i wouldn't be surprised if you were right. I'd personally like to see it to spite Rick because, as we've been talking about, I prefer when he's not omnipotent and behaving without consequence.
>>
>>94645645

>It was funnier seeing him butthurt about Pirates of the Pancreas

To be fair, the entire premise of the newest episode was that he was petty and butthurt. He murdered a bunch of people because he was petty and butthurt.
>>
>>94645756
AND his depression
>>
I think it's pretty hard to not make make a Gary Stu when we're talking about the smartest man in the universe but like, Rick isn't perfect. He constantly fucks things up for other universes, He's kind of impulsive and immature which puts him and Morty in danger all the time, And in last night's episode, The guy was responsible for the unraveling of a galactic superhero team. I wouldn't say perfect, I'd say pretty hard to touch as a character.
>>
>>94645381
>I didn't watch season 1 and 2

Quality post.
>>
>>94646130
Should every character in a story be balanced? Is it not 'fair' if one of them isn't?
>>
>>94645720
Not him, but what is the rest of the joke. Keep in mind that is has to be funny and entertaining to be a joke.
>>
>>94645702
Rick has flaws? Like what? Being a dick is not a flaw because he always gets his way and is always right anyway. Being "depressed" while running about doing as he pleases is not even a sensible personality trait. His "flaws" are worse than "well my anime Mary Sue is clumsy!"
>>
>>94645788
How does it negatively affect him? He has shown many times he doesn't care when people die.
>>
>>94646268
>>94646291
being such a cunt that he disappoints morty and then enacting a whole Saw game because he got so butthurt about it that he got black-out drunk, while in the end still not being able to express his feelings like a normal regular person and because of that constantly hurting his family, they made it pretty clear in the last two episodes but I guess since "female writers" is a thing you don't really care
>>
>>94646207
Are you defining 'entertaining' as something other than providing amusement?
>>
>>94646190
I, for one, don't think so. However this thread is trying to make Rick out to be a Gary Stu and based on my own viewing experience, If someone were to ask me about Rick, I wouldn't instantly sigh and start lamenting about how perfect he is.
>>
>>94646372
But the person said "joke". So what's the joke, eh? There's a punchline coming from Rick being a Gary Stu?
Other than the audience is a bunch of suckers from watching. lol
>>
>>94646783
The 'joke' here is the poor definition of jokes, funny, and comedy being used. The false assumption that all jokes include a punchline or are intended to incite laughter is irrevocably inaccurate.

Denying the existence of certain forms of comedy is comedic nihilism. Rick and Morty on the other hand, is comedic nihilism. You see, it's a play on words. It's a joke, a form of amusement, a diversion based on the understanding of the communicator and the comunicatee.

The joke being that despite his intelligence he is unhappy. You see, it's a dramatic hyperbole of a familiar condition, the Sad Socrates effect if you will, in which intelligence causes, increases, or does not abate depression.

It's a simple joke from a crew that historically does caca poo poo pee pee jokes. If you have to laugh for something to be amusing, then grab some Dane Cook tickets and prepare to be unhappy for the rest of your life.

>>
>>94647196
Intelligent people isn't some profound unexpected thing, so you whole point falls flat.
>>
>>94647363
if that was an argument then you would have had a point but its not
>>
>>94647363
>profound unexpected thing
Who said it was?
>>
>>94647196
>If you have to laugh for something to be amusing

Nigga forget laughing, did you expect me to be engaged by your first-trip-to-/lit/ analysis? So we agree you don't need to laugh to be amused, but it would be a bonus in the future if you could actually reference something amusing to support your point
>>
>>94647196
>The false assumption that all jokes include a punchline or are intended to incite laughter is irrevocably inaccurate.
>(webster) joke: something said or done to provoke laughter; especially : a brief oral narrative with a climactic humorous twist
> (oxford) joke: A thing that someone says to cause amusement or laughter, especially a story with a funny punchline.
> (cambridge) joke: something, such as an amusing story or trick, that is said or done in order to make people laugh
> (collins): A joke is something that is said or done to make you laugh, for example a funny story.

we, the people, agree on certain meanings of words so that language works. The agreed upon meaning of "joke" is "thing intended to cause laughter". The word you're looking for to describe Rick's situation is "irony". Irony ain't inherently funny
>>
>>94645487
>In a multiverse full of infinite Rick's he is the greatest and smartest and the one that almost always right about everything
The writers should kill him and have one of his alternate universe selves, or a clone, or a shapeshifting whatever take his place, and have none of the other characters care.
>>
>>94645381
He's always been a Mary Sue. Sort of. He also has a lot of flaws but besides not being perfect he ticks all the boxes.

But a lot of genre protagonists are like that, which is one reason the term may not have utility outside of fanfiction.

And of course this is a comedy so like Brock Sampson or Lord Flashheart being an over-the-top badass is part of the joke.
>>
>>94645859
No, no, no. To be fair, have you seen Pirates of the Pancreas? I really think you'd like it. Obviously I’m biased, but, I think it’s great. You should really treat yourself.
>>
>>94646336
But his family being hurt or upset clearly doesn't affect him, so how is that a failure on his part? He fucking specifically says that he just manipulates them all and goes to get other versions of them if something he doesn't like happens anyway.

>but I guess since "female writers" is a thing you don't really care
I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.
>>
>>94645381
Are you suggesting Rick Sanchez has no flaws?

Have you seen the show? Or are you only going by what you've heard about from memes?
>>
>>94647196
So the joke is that there is no joke, the character is poorly written, and the show is becoming less entertaining and humorous. Wow, such advanced thinking, are you a genius?

From what I've seen, he seems to just pull answers out of his ass and be right despite how much he annoys some people in universe. Comes off as eye-rollingly infallible. I'm not going to go full "mary sue" with it, but he bugs me far too much to really give the show more of a chance. More power to you if you like him, but I can't stand the fucker.
>>
>>94648796
>less entertaining

So you're saying he wasn't always a Gary Stu but now is? What changed?
>>
>>94648863
That happens a lot but the show is aware of it, see: Rick Potion N9, where that fails, and some other episode but I can't recall which
>>
>>94648927
He accidentally sterilized the human race and killed a team of superheroes on last night's episode.
>>
>>94645381
It's only a mary sue if it isn't a joke series. Him being able to do anything isn't taken seriously, it's intentional to allow for absurd plots.
>>
>>94645381
There is a difference between being overly powerful and having no flaws. Rick is overly powerful to the point of absurdity but he is definitely flawed.
>>
>>94645381
He is, its boring. Not very much to talk about.
>>
I'm actually enjoying the new season since I lowered my expectations about the show.
I don't care anymore about Rick's past, evil Morty, Bird person and all the other half-assed attempts on depth.
The episodes are funny enough and the animation is decent, sometimes pretty good.
If the writers want to make a better interconnected story, good, but is not completely necessary to enjoy the show.
>>
This fucking episode was one of the best in the entire series.

They even took a shot at diversity quota in movies, Rick is against Israël and his nihilism is hypocritical. What's fucking wrong now? What do you guys have to say?
>>
Just use Mary Sue, it's a unisex term.
>>
>>94647196
All of that build up build up, and you have no idea what you are talking about do you champ?
>>
>>94651492
Enlighten me, professor.
>>
>>94647196
>You see
>if you will
hows the lunch money champ

>whole point of the show is that he may be a genius but he's an asshole who destroyed his family twice and psychologically abuses his grandchildren with his warped ideas of the universe

Nice b8 though
>>
>>94645381
>doesn't know what a mary sue is
>uses retarded term gary stu
Mary Sue =/= overpowered character
>>
>>94651907
I was doing a bit; but I guess that only hits home to people with refined tastes such as myself.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Om7a2s8cZuI
>>
>>94645405
I dont think anyone was supposed to feel bad for him yesterday or last episode for that matter because it was him fucking around like usual
>>
The real fucking question here is if there's porn of that Starbitch yet.
>>
>>94652575
Why did she kill antman
>>
>>94645670
There were a few times when he wasn't right, and just recently in that button crossover he wanted Barry's forensic knowledge since Bruce acknowledges Barry is the actual expert while he is just competent at it.
>>
>>94652618
Something something, no witnesses. Frankly that was the one part of the episdoe that struck me as super random.
>>
>>94645487
This just became fanfiction tier levels
>>
I don't see how a character that straight up shat themselves on screen can be a marry sue.
>>
>>94645381
Am I the only one who thought this episode was boring. It was just the same old "Rick destroys everything for everybody and at the end doesn't care because good and evil are constructs and reality is illusion" kind of shit
>>
>Gary Stu
I wouldn't go that far. Im new to the series but while he can pretty much do anyrhing, he's also the rawest form of asshole imaginable, to the point where you'd almost want him to fail if it didnt mean the end of the world or something, and the show appears to be aware of that. So no, I wouldnt call him a gary stu
>>
>>94645381
No, because a Gary Stu isn't just defined by his characteristics, but also how the universe treats him.

Despite all of his godlike super-intelligence, he's still constantly at odds with the universe and himself. He constantly has to think of creative ways to outwit opponents. Even if we know he'll eventually outwit them, its how he does it that makes the story compelling.

Even if you were to examine his character, he has obvious flaws: alcoholism, arrogance, selfishness, and a general disregard for humanity.
