I enjoyed it. It was neat to see an episode with Rick as the antagonist.

I mean, he's already a villainous asshole, but he's usually on the 'side' of the main characters. Seeing him go straight up Saw on people for shits and giggles is something else. Looks like they might live up to that promise of this being their darkest season yet.

The space chick killing the ant guy felt kind of forced though. The planet thing I get, they thought they were doing good in their own fucked up way. Ghost Train I get, that was a hostile moment and he tried to kill the ant guy. But her killing the ant guy for...what? Being romantic? It felt like they just wanted to emphasize how this chick is a villain for the last moment, but I think that made her fall kind of flat and actually takes away from how fucked up what Rick did was.

I really like Morty's development this episode. We've been seeing hints that he's getting smarter for a while now, and now we see he can disarm fucking bombs. He's certainly no Rick but he's developing a real set of talents and abilities.

I liked the gator guy a lot and was sad when he died even though I knew it was coming.

This was an ok episode. I appreciate combining genres (superhero + sci-fi) and the expanded worldbuilding. A handful of the jokes were a little painful, but overall, from the improved animation to the improved characterization of Morty, there was plenty to enjoy

I think they should've killed off Supernova. I hate that trope where because a supervillain's a woman, she's automatically sympathetic

But if they're setting up for a Rick rogue's gallery, that's fine too, just so long as she dies horribly like everyone else

It was pretty great, liked that the redhead with the rack showed up again.

I laughed once and it was at the dismembered legs flying around on the rocket boots.

I wish it wasn't THE AVENGERS SQUAD OF THE GALAXY LEAGUE parody episode, if I wanted to see some 3edgy5me allegories for Marvel/DC I'd read a Marvel/DC comic book or an image comic that wanted to "Make the almonds a churning".

I don't know if I'm just tired or because I'm not that much of a Marvel/DC fag, but this episode didn't really do much for me. I didn't laugh or whatever. It was enjoyable, but didn't seem as fun as it should of been. I'm glad they dropped the family drama bullshit though.

This was a good episode. I was rolling my eyes a few times but I enjoyed it, I just wish Rick wasn't so over love-y to Morty that seems out of character.

Rick and Morty is a parody and deconstruction of the trope of a brilliant protagonist teaming up with his loyal but otherwise normal kid.

Doc/The Doctor/Batman is brilliant enough to solve any problem put before them but Marty/The Companion/Robin is young, inexperienced, and can't even wrap their head around what they're dealing with. In their respective franchises this is treated like a master/apprentice relationship, or like a summer job as an assistant, but these characters are put in real harm and their lives rest on the complete and absolute vigilance of their superior in the face of real danger (which can even be caused by the superior)

The superior being the smartest, most capable being ever encountered is the foundation of the relationship, because as long as they are infinitely capable then they fail by a failure to manage their own responsibility. For Rick to get Morty killed by something too big and scary for Rick to understand would mean the blame doesn't squarely rest on his shoulders, you can't blame him for not being able to beat something capable of outsmarting him.

I liked seeing rick pull his rick device that elaborately stopped the bullets, made tiny robots from the material, then did micro gymnastics to mount and clog the guns.

So he could jump out and jazz hands while they blew themselves up. Then the joke right after about how they could have just used the ghost train. Really struck home how fucking smart rick is that he just happens to have that machine in his jacket and the over the top method of disarming the guns.

Watching Million ants kill the black dude was pretty shocking though. Didn't sand man do something similar to spider man?

I thought the new episode was just fine. I don't think it really brought anything new to the table but nothing in it was offensively bad.

The only part that I didn't really like was at the end with the whole fake-out "You think this is a heartwarming moment where Rick is gonna say he cares about Morty but it turns out it's not!" since that's getting pretty old at this point. I mean it's a bit early in the season to have a big character moment like Rick straight up proclaiming his love for Morty, but I still hated being lead on by the same set-up and punchline again.

Any episode who's central "joke" is that real life is more complicated than superheroes is a bad episode because its an obvious, stupid joke. If a Superhero actually showed up to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a Supervillain named The Isis Iguana would reveal himself as the mastermind of every source of controversy the Middle East has ever produced and the good guys would be able to just punch him and drop him in front of a UN council who suddenly found their balls. In fact, that would have made for a WAY better episode. One where Rick keeps setting up these traps meant to subvert the heroes and expose them as being more human than they let on, you know, because THATS never been done before, but they just plow through them with all the self awareness and sincerity of an unlicensed silver age comic.

At the human like weaknesses that the episode exposes themselves aren't even original. The pure hearted, furrowed brow leader is actually a self conscious, scared prick when things don't go his way. Marital troubles and cheating behind people's backs. A controlling and overly emotional woman with psychic powers.
Fucking WOW. That would have been really groundbreaking if it came out in the fucking 70s.

The episode was dumb, the jokes were bad, and the audience is treated like kids in their sophomore year of high school who just found out their dad actually had a previous wife and Santa Claus isn't real.

What's funny though is that the emotion was actually still sort of there, because Sober Rick was forced to admit something that Drunk Rick MIGHT have said, he was just wrong. So instead of Rick drunkenly admitting something emotional due to lack of a filter, he did it while sober and came to that conclusion through logic.
But then the way it plays out undercuts the sincerity of it all so brilliantly, and is a nice avoidance of predictability since they've pulled the 'fleeting moment of sincerity' card once or twice before, especially in a way that gives last minute meaning to an episode of nonsense.

I wasn't nuts about the episode all up, but this whole scenario from set up at the beginning to payoff at the end was really well done.

I still enjoy this show, but at the same time it is not as good as the previous seasons so far

Could be that the creators are starting to take r&m too seriously with an attempt to make the characters and the plot deeper, and this was done in a somewhat akward way that doesn't really fit with the tone of the previous seasons which had a more playful approach

While Rick is an asshole they push his worst traits too far to the point of (at least me) to actually dislike him. Yes he's always been a careless dick but he's less charming about it this season. When he did fucked up things in older episodes you still rooted for him in a way that I personally don't do anymore.

With that said I understand the need for changes and development in order for a show to stay alive, it's just that I personally am not the greatest fan of what did change

As someone who thought Pickle Rick was decent, the new episode sucked. Well, I guess there were a couple okay things about it, but otherwise I didn't like it. They should have started the episode immediately at the Saw part and cut out the incredibly boring first half. Focus more on the characters and give them fun personalities instead of the whole "ha ha they're all generic shitty people isn't that HILARIOUS?". Add a few more twists on top, and you've got yourself a solid episode. This was anything but solid, it was a total mess.

Also I'm getting increasingly annoyed at all the drama in this season. I'm not saying the characters need to be hunky-dory 24/7, but having them constantly argue and whine at each other is not fun. It's just tedious. At the very least they should use the family drama to make interesting plots. Like Beth and Jerry got divorced in the first episode but they're just NOW doing a plot with Jerry. Jerry should have had his own subplot every single episode, honestly. Would have been a lot more interesting than what we've gotten so far.

Right now season 3 is by far the worst. Season 1 was very solid, season 2 was a lot more mixed but had some gold, 3 has ranged from mediocre to terrible. If this downward trend continues I hope Roiland has the good sense to cancel the show.

I think they could have made the superhero episode a lot better. The 'hey, these superheroes are actually assholes' premise is really tired and it was executed like something Mark Millar would have written in 2003. Rather than being one-dimensionally good they're all one-dimensionally fake and petty, what a shocking reversal. I don't know how to call it, but I've had similar issues with this episode that I've had with Pickle Rick. In the previous episode Rick breaks into what seems to be an embassy and kills innocent guards. Later we find out that they are actually evil action movie villains or some shit, but Rick didn't know that. Here he sets a death trap for "heroes". Later we find out that they are terrible people that destroyed a planet, but Rick didn't know that. The first episode literally starts with Rick drunkenly almost destroying mankind and it only gets worse from there. I repeat, Rick was never shown to be someone worth looking up to, a moral idol for anyone to follow.

Is all you watched the first episode and this episode? Really, watch the other seasons. Rick is displayed as an all-powerful near omniscient entity who describes himself as the most powerful thing on all conceivable timelines. He destroyed an intergalactic empire, a government organization consisting of copies of himself with same-level intelligence, and routinely navigates time/dimensions while drunk. He accomplishes everything he tries to do almost effortlessly unless he needs to fail to drive the plot -- the viewer is rooting for Rick all through the first two seasons. Of course he's shown to be despicable and not care about anyone, but that doesn't matter so much when he's just better than everyone. This season is when the writers are finally trying to show the real effects of justifying mental illness with intelligence, especially on those closest to you.

Pickle Rick sucked honestly.

It was 50% just an animated Rick tearing shit apart for some reason (yeah, Rick and Morty has gore, but it really is not why its good. The only episode that is about as bad in my eyes is the Purge one, and its pretty similar in that aspect).

That and the tired therapist trope probably a thousand shows like the simpsons have done before.


I liked the episode. Honestly the only things I am afraid might hold the show back is going to hard into venerating previous seasons. Rick being a dick is fun, but it doesn't need to be the major theme of every single episode - which seems to be the case this season

that episode was fucking stupid and as far as I'm concerned the show has now lost it. It's not bad exactly, but the magic of the premise is now totally gone.
You can't have a good fish-out-of-water story about Rick taking Morty on high-concept sci-fi adventures if Morty is now totally comfortable with it, and every fucking adventure is a parody of pop-culture where they roll their eyes and guess every element ahead of time because they're subverting cliches again.
This episode felt like it was written by an angsty teenager who's too cool to have fun or care about anything. The tone of the show has finally disappeared up its own ass and it's a far cry from the balance present in the very early episodes which made this show feel like something new and hard to predict.
I used to ignore those jackoffs calling this show 'reddit and morty' because I thought it still had a unique voice, but as of season 3 it has become THE most reddit show currently airing. A healthy mix of "hey, I know that thing" and "you're right, that thing I know is stupid huffff let me sniff my own farts mmmmmm."
Overanalysing pop-culture doesn't make your show smart. Bring something new to the table or fuck off.

I actually like the idea of there being a time loop where Morty has to travel back and replace Rick repeatedly. Rick is a complete asshole because he has to act like his grandfather to keep the timeline from being changed, but he only really remembers how big an ass he was, so each loop it gets a little more extreme. The recursive incest somehow keeps making him smarter too.
