Didn't like Pickle Rick, thought the Mad Max episode was passable at best.

This 'un, though? This is the first episode that really felt like authentic Rick and Morty this season. There's an emotional core, but you have to dig for it, no cliched "heart" of the episode, and a very good grasp on Rick's character. I feel like Pickle Rick and Rickmancing the Stone didn't really respect its audience's intelligence, literally having characters explain their arcs with no ambiguity, whereas this episode didn't feel the need to TELL you "Hey Rick went on that drinking binge because of Morty in the first place."

Honestly it wasn't too funny of an episode, the emotional scenes felt contrived compared to how's it's been handled before, and what we learn at the end is redundant for anyone who's watched the show. All that with a weak ending and an awkward reappearance of Gearhead (wouldn't Rick and him be on bad terms after what happened). I would say this is probably the only episode of Rick and Morty that I don't like.

I figured out what's so egregious about this season, throughout the series Rick has always been painted as an asshole, he's manipulative and uses others for his own gain. In the first two seasons the writers had actual faith in the viewers to draw their own conclusions about Rick and assume that he's an asshole based on his actions, maybe even based on their own viewpoint see him as justified. In this season however every single major character has had their own moment telling off Rick and Rick has done absolutely nothing but irrepressible actions with no redeeming qualities. So instead of the audience drawing their own inferences from material shown (no matter how obvious they may be) the material itself is telling the audience how to feel, leaving no room for the viewer to actually think about the show they're watching.

I suppose this is what makes the transition from the season 2 finale to the season 3 premiere so jarring, instead of the morality of Rick's actions being somewhat ambiguous, even his sacrifice being somewhat righteous it turned out in the conclusion to the season 2 finale season 3 episode 1 the writers ended up saying "a character who can be viewed as having more than one trait? lol no, Rick's literally nothing but an asshole remember? :^)"

One thing that grates on me is that the show has Rick serve comeuppance to antagonists that turn out to be bad people, like the Vindicators being revealed as petty murderers, but over the course of the show, Rick has accumulated a laundry list of misdeeds that make him probably the worst person in the universe. However, the show still expects you to root for him in all circumstances.

It's like cheering for a child rapist when they murder a jaywalker.

Rick And Morty became "No Fun Allowed: The Show".

At this point it feels really self conscious. It's like the writers just have to be smarter than everyone else, at the expense of the enjoyment of the show.

It actually handled meta humor pretty well before. Rick and Morty just running away to a virtually identical dimension after wrecking their own was followed by the line "We get 3, 4 more of these tops". It worked in both the context of the universe and the context of the show itself. Rick previously established that there are very few realities that are so close to their own, but it also doubles as a reference to the fact that copouts like that only work a few times before they ruin the show.

Compare the thoughtfulness of that to the sophomoric stupidity of the new episode, which is basically "Straightforward good guys don't exist and are actually worse than super badass anti-heroes like Rick. That guy's so cool. He built an entire Saw scenario while drunk, how wild is that?". It just boils down to "Conventional good guys are stupid and we're smarter because Rick is deep n shit.".

It also just wasn't a funny episode. It relied entirely on the audience being amused at the subverted expectations of the plot as well as how totally badass Rick is. But at this point, subversions have become the new cliche and we're all sick of how intellegent Rick is.

The show's "matured" above being entertaining and transcended into being pseudo-intellectual nihilism about how everything sucks. For how self aware the writers try to be, they've somehow never heard of a Mary Sue before.
