IMO Fantomex was ruined by giving him the "misdirection" power. Originally his only power was EVA, his external nervous system that can become a space ship and a female shaped person.
The misdirection power is actually similar to what Dani moonstar used to have before getting depowered by Wanda. I do like Fantomex much more than Gambit, whom I see as just a "90s cool" character.

I also never liked Kitty, but it seems she is the waifu of many writers.

He's been fine so far. He is pretty smart with some kind of engineering degree and could only find work as a tech repair man. He ended up falling in with some super villain before being busted by Pym and Scot Ant-Mens.

He is totally new and shit as a super hero, but he tries and has a good heart. He's also smart and can build/invent stuff, which seems unneeded in Marvel universe, but there it is.

Which they are, as with any other character made to appeal to an audience, which is just about any character in fiction.
