The issue is she had zero character beyond "move the plot along and explain things." It would've been more interesting if she stayed a villain that kept hunting Jack.
>>
>>94605198
Isn't it funny how only females are demanded to have complex characters? Jack was as bland as a popsicle stick with zero development from season 1 to 4 and no one said anything.

That wasn't her fault. It was the shoehorning of a plot to finalize what was never a plot heavy series - there was no way anything they did was going to be satisfying, because there was never any setup beforehand for an ending. The best thing they could have done was have an assortment of standalone episodes, then a 2-part finale. any plot was going to be a letdown, especially after the hype cycle.
>>94605198
Jack has no character beyond asian warrior stereotypes, not sure what you're trying to say. He's as bland as she is.

Her character development was as extensive as Jacks.
It was subject to the rushjob the entire season was, but it was there.
>>
>>94605790
The reasoning that she ruined the show because she lacked character is invalid. She was a complex character, going from a mission-driven cold assassin to being reborn as a person and having to relearn the world. Whenever guys dislike a female character they always go to "poor/lack of character" because they have no real reason besides their own personal biases.

>>
>>94606169
Ashi exacerbated the problem, but the real underlying issue was that 10 episodes was not long enough to tell the entire story at anything but a breakneck pace, and Genndy wanted to give certain elements enough time to breathe meaning other elements had to be cut to the bone.

She wasn't "born beautiful yesterday". She wasn't naive or inexperienced at life at all and was simply misguided at the beginning.
In fact a criticism I have is that she seemed TOO knowledgeable on certain worldly aspects.
She shouldn't have the knowledge of relationships to kiss Jack or ask him if he has a girl back home waiting for him.

Im mostly upset about the final season because it spent the entire time setting up a relationship that gets thrown out last minute for the sake of plot convenience. Moreover, erasing everything that came before it, every friend hes met and good deed done, while planting him back at square one just rubbed me the wrong way
>>
>>94606241

>What's wrong with Korra?
Opening the floodgates for countless immortal, magical, virtually indestructable beings hostile towards humans into the physical world (something that was desired by the embodiment of evil), for starters.
>>
Would it have been better if it was a paradox?
It makes no sense that Jack didn't age 50 years forward due to aku's magic being stopped. Or reset the timeline due to aku's magic never affecting him in the first place.
The fact that ashi didn't disappear immediately makes it even weirder, time corrects itself but only prevents the future from happening, but why is jack still himself?

It was solid. I really don't think they had to bring Scaramouche back after it, he did nothing funny or interesting besides making a penis joke.

This. It was weird how they were portayd as "brainwashed/innocent" little girls who just left home and 1 week after that she bangs jack, the old samurai with PTSD.
>>
>>94619386
>I really don't think they had to bring Scaramouche back after it
They needed a reason for Aku to show up. At that point it was clear he was fucking done with Jack, it'd would've been too convenient for Aku to have a contrived reason to see Jack again right after him and Ashi got together.

His scenes definitely dragged a bit, but that's why they tried to make him as charismatic as possible.

>She wasn't naive or inexperienced at life at all

A lot of important character development apparently took place off-screen. We don't know when exactly did Jack learn Ashi's name, or when did Ashi learn that Jack's from the past, but they still did learn those things.
I wish the show hadn't skipped important character moments like that. But since they did, presumably Ashi learned a lot more off-screen, and that's supposed to explain why she appears less naive towards the end of the season.

I'm annoyed this is the only place I can discuss it freely. My friends ate up the finale, and when I mentioned that I didn't care for it they just immediately assumed I was being a contrarian dick for no reason.

I mean, I get it was a mix of justified and unjustified backlash but I feel like my complaints about the pacing and overall character development (or lack thereof) is in some way justified, I'm not just saying "I HATE SAMURAI JACK BECAUSE IT'S POPULAR".

I've been in the fence about it for so long, not sure whether I completely loved or hated the finale. What it ends up being for me is ehh, because for all the things the finale does right, it's cancelled out by something shitty, so the whole things ends up feeling like a disappointment.

Honestly, if they were going to pull her being one with aku and having his powers and all that power of love and bullshit, why didn't they have a twist end like Her being the root cause of Aku in the first place via this time loop or something, so Jack has to tragically kill her, and then gets with that one yellow kimono girl and has a daughter, and names her Ashi in remembrance?

>jack didn't develop

>>94625022
Like I said, the season was chock full of bullshit, and Ashi's character was unfortunately bogged down by all of it. I still like her, and wish she was utilized in a better way like the original series might have. No matter what anyone says, people are still going to blame her for the season being shit, and that's sucks.
>>
>>94625166
I want to say that Ashi's problem stemmed from a lack of time to explore her as a character (which is true, the season sorely needed more episodes to tell the story it wanted to), but honestly there's a lot of irrelevant bullshit that could have been reworked or cut to better suit the needs of the story. I mean, too many parts of the story were solved by deus ex machina, Scaramouche's journey to Aku took FAR too much screentime (and I say this as a man who fucking loves Scaramouche), and Jack's journey to retrieve his sword was ultimately a forgettable endeavor.
>>

I was surprised when /co/ wasn't just being contrarian as fuck about the ending being disappointing, but a lot of the focus seems to be on Ashi when my personal problem was the final battle being anticlimatic as fuck. The "then all of Jack's friends help fight" thing was so creatively bankrupt I couldn't believe it. It's literally the default "I don't know how else to end this cartoon" ending. It could've been fine as a short little outside battle thing, but it replaced Jack having a final showdown with Aku and Ashi. This show had so much action, but literally any random episode from the original series was more thrilling than the finale, which is embarrassing. Especially since the bar was raised so high in the first three episodes. Yes, we all know that Jack can beat Aku but that's not the point. This was THE final fight, yet Aku and Jack barely did anything at all.

My only problem with Ashi as a character was her development was rushed, inevitable with only 12 episodes, and that she somehow persisted in the past for weeks to months after Aku's death. If this show had gone out with an actually good fight scene, I'm sure the Ashi bullshit would've been forgiven but the final fight was literally SO underwhelming it just left you feeling empty. This show was largely about a samurai killing robots and other fantastical creatures, and the final season felt like a darker and more thrilling version of that show but the lack of consistently good fight scenes like in the original show killed it.
>>
Everything wrong with the season can be traced back to the fact that they didn't have enough time. They didn't have enough time because they decided to spent a ton of screentime of Ashi, leading to rushed unsatisfactory conclusions like the ghost samurai haunting Jack. And to top it all off, they spent like half the season building up Ashi and her romance with Jack and throw it away at the end for cheap drama. I mean if you're gonna to spent so much time on her and a romance subplot then at least have the balls to commit to it at the ending. Instead it feels like a waste since we didn't even have a happy ending with her and Jack.
>>
>>94624741
Yeah. Samurai Jack threads, as scarce as they were, used to be pretty fun. Now it's shitposting all over the place.
And this is coming from someone who, acknowledging season 5's flaws loved it nonetheless.
>>
>>94621963
No he won't, Jack experienced the time loop. Its just that once he looped it sealed itself creating a divergent timeline.
>>
>>94625368
I think the final battle between Jack and Aku would have been disappointing either way.
The power difference between the two of them has scaled immensely since the show started. The best fights they've ever had were during their first encounter, in which they didn't know each other and thus were inexperienced and in the one in the cemetery, in which Aku held the advantage.

I do think it was an intelligent decision having Jack finishing Aku up without even talking and doing it in a rather quick and humiliating way. It fit quite well. But as the finale, they needed to add more trepidation and thus we got the final battle between Aku and Jack's allies.
And that's pretty sad, because I feel they decided to play it safe with that.

Now, this is just my opinion and I probably have shit taste, but I feel maybe it would have been better to let Jack finish off Aku in the first ten minutes of the episode and spend the final 10 minutes wrapping up everything with going back to the past and Ashi.
>>
>>94625394
10 episodes would have been a fantastic season with the old format of episodes barely relating to each other with only a few lingering plotpoints hanging over. If they wanted to tell a concise story they should have gone for 15 episodes or so.

>I wish the show hadn't skipped important character moments like that. But since they did, presumably Ashi learned a lot more off-screen, and that's supposed to explain why she appears less naive towards the end of the season.
Show don't tell, amirite?
>>
>>94625550
You're absolutely right in that one of the biggest problems with the finale was the rushing of Aku's defeat and the lack of closure with Jack's allies. Presumably, many of them died in that final battle after Aku rained spikes on everybody, but it would've been nice to know whether they continue to exist after Jack changes the timeline.

Sure, it's clear enough that Ashi can't exist because she was born from Aku, who was never there to inseminate her Mother. But it's not clear how things are for everyone else, the circumstances of their births could still have occurred even without Aku's existence. NOT THAT THEY EVER TOLD US.
>>
>>94625681
I actually don't mind the ambiguity of the ending with all those characters because I feel it's pretty well closed in that ending shot.
When Jack holds the butterfly in his finger (as corny as it is, that sequence of Jack wandering though the mist redeemed a big part of the finale for me) and releases it to the world, only to show the rows of trees that had been burnt by Aku.
It was a message of hope, but also uncertainty. As in Jack doesn't know what lies ahead of him or the world for that matter, but there's now something good to look forward to.

That visual message sat very well with me and made me forgive the lack of attention the secondary characters suffered in the finale.
However, I still lament that they did most half the way. They really should have stuck to one extreme.
For example, killing off the Scotsman for good. I honestly liked his death and wouldn't have minded if he stayed dead.
Bringing his allies but without giving them the proper attention (and I mean in Jack and them interacting somehow) was a mistake. Either go all the way or don't do it at all.

Ashi didn't ruin the season but she is emblematic of the real problem: With Season 5, Genndy completely changed the formula of Samurai Jack, and the transition was not graceful.

Samurai Jack (Seasons 1-4) was a show about a wandering samurai having achronological adventures in a weird sci-fi futurescape. "Getting back to the past" was never more than an excuse for Jack to meet new people and enter new situations. Each episode was self-contained, a movie unto itself.

Samurai Jack Season 5 flipped the script in almost every way. S1-4 was self-contained storytelling, S5 was serialized. S1-4 were relatively bloodless, S5 piled on the violence. S1-4 was straightforward and action-driven, S5 injected characterization and SO MUCH ANGST.

It's almost like Genndy felt uncomfortable with what he viewed as limitations within the framework of Samurai Jack and tried to make Season 5 more "legitimate storytelling". But the greatness of Samurai Jack was always in its craft, not necessarily its storytelling. The reason Samurai Jack was so compelling was because Genndy was a master at pacing, cinematography, and fight choreography. Every episode was a master class in how to entice a viewer through a slow build, then rewarding their patience with a loud, satisfying crescendo.

Samurai Jack 1-4 was a show that told simple stories spectacularly well. Season 5 told a more ambitious story in a clunky, uneven manner and ultimately it will not be remembered as fondly as a result.

With this I disagree a bit.
While the first seasons were bloodless, they were as violent as season 5. Also, Jack did received some characterization in the original seasons as well as a good dose of angst here and there; those moments were more spaced out because we're comparing 4 seasons with one. I'd say that in those regards the new season was pretty balanced compared to the original in proportion.

I am okay with the path they chose for their relationship's nature. Whether they had been lovers, friends or master and apprentice I would have enjoyed.

I think it's that despite the difference in the method and context of their training, both of them were brought up in similar ways. The disparity between their experience of the world is what setup the father/daughter scenario, otherwise they would only have been seen as equals/friends/romantic partners.

It's a Jashi fic where Jack and Ashi are young adults who both end up living in Burlington, VT. They knew each other as kids, but reconnect near the start of the story, and their relationship kicks off from there.

I incorporated a shit ton of plot elements and characters from the show itself, but modern interpretations of them.

IMO best thing they could have done was have Aku accidentally end himself through his own arrogance.

IE: He sends Jack back in time just to let him watch the slave-labor conditions his parents are suffering under, but Jack breaks free unexpectantly and delivers the final blow in a very anticlimactic "Oh shit" moment for Aku.

This is how I thought the series was going to end, and I was really disappointed when this subplot about Aku's daughter inheriting his power got introduced.

Yes, yes, I know about the fanfiction about wandering the wastes with his girlfriend. At the same time, I thought Genndy would have more restraint than to just wholesale pick the plot out that he pitched years ago and place it unaltered into the show.

The whole point of the dynamic between Jack and Aku was how Aku could never really kill Jack due to his own conceited nature. So his death should be directly his own fault for underestimating him.
>>
>>94635417
You do realize his death WAS directly his fault right? He ordered demonashi to stop seconds before she executed a surrendering jack.
He did this so he could rub it in everyones face and it allowed others to rescue jack
>>
>>94635465
not necessarily. While his actions lead to his death, it wasn't a direct cause-effect. His arrogance did him in, but only because of a plot twist that Aku could have never seen coming.
Aku's greatest moments are when he fails at something that even a toddler could have seen coming, because he's this cosmological evil but still grapples with simple cause and effect problems.
>>
>>94635055
I kinda feel like i shouldn't have put pacing, because everyone agrees and always has agreed that pacing in general sucked and it isn't specific enough to be indicative of peoples opinions

>>94629841

>>
>>94639777
Change is exactly what development entails.
A character ideally has a starting point and an ending point(in terms of personality), and the storys events help develop the former into the latter.
For example, telling us in different ways that jack is a noble humble man who feels regret for his perceived failure against aku is not moving his story forward, as we already KNEW that from the first episode.
However we see ashi begin as an indoctrinated aku-worshipping assassin, and through Jack's actions and dialogues with her, she develops into a sweet, brave, loving person who finally feels like she is worth something.

Jack even has character development between seasons and throughout season 5, but he does not have any meaningful development in the originals, if for no other reason than any development is wiped away in the next episode.
