I haven't read the comics and never will, but I always assumed she would be partially rehabilitated and put to use serving her country in a position where she doesn't have enough authority to cause too much damage if she has another mental breakdown-induced spaz attack or whatever. So some sort of intelligence officer or military advisor in charge of training troops or black ops operators, but not commanding them in the field.

He was ready to execute his son on the direct orders of the fire lord so its not like he was given a choice, and the Earth Kingdom non-fire nation so it's cool to murder them.
