Zatanna, unfortunately doesn't really have any good stories that are all her own for you to just pick up and read.

She is one of the Seven Soldiers in Grant Morrison's Seven Soldiers, but that's a pretty involved and complicated set of books that I think I would come back when you have read a bit of other stuff. I think you will enjoy it more, you will get more of the references and you'll appreciate the interconnectedness and seperateness of it all.

There's a kind of cutesy Zatanna series by Paul Dini and it's OK but it's not really going to show you anything about magic in the DCU.

You would be best off starting with someone else/some place else.

However, Rebirth is currently re-writing the Guardians and Lantern's first ring, that Planet Earth is actually the center of the universe as the actual oldest planet in the universe and a bunch of other stuff, so I wouldn't stress to much about the continuity. I do think how they used the Books of Magic and the basis for magic here, from another dimension, is actually pretty interesting and unique.

Well, I'll put it in spoiler text, but the arc is essentially about looking for a very powerful magical object(s) that turn out to actually be a very specific portal for a very specific magic being to another dimension, which is where magic began and it exists on our Earth - in our dimension, so to speak - because the magic users left that dimension and came to Earth because they were being prosecuted in their home planet/place . It may actually be two arcs, I read all the entire series by slamming the trades over like 5 or 6 days. I remember all the Forever Evil stuff being pure tie-in garbage, but thought they could have done so much more with Hunter and the entire Books of Magic stuff.
