Almost all normies like TFA, but from what I saw there was a split in opinions between normies on Rogue One. I'll have to say Rogue One because it was the first attempt at an anthology and it tried to be different despite being set in a familiar timezone. TFA is pretty good but Rogue One is fucking phenomenal.
I literally can not think of a single flaw with R1 aside from nitpicks like the bar thug & droid cameos being unneeded.
Whole cast does a great job, Jyn character-wise has everything right that they got wrong with Rey (who I do like), the ending from when the 2 destroyers crash into each other to the start of the credits is perfection, score is utterly beautiful.

I feel like outside of the Mortis thing, no parent reveal that I can think of could be anything relevant to the Star Wars story, making Rey a really strange choice and disconnected choice for the protagonist.

Also, the way they described Luke and Ben's relationship in the recent EW articles doesn't suggest Luke had a child of his own. I was more interested in Rogue One, but the main actors didn't feel as good. There were several places where their emotional moments didn't hit or the plot just sort of skipped over development. Not that TFA was terribly great in this regard either, but it felt solid enough both times I watched it. Still prefer Rogue One over TFA, it has more of what I like in Star Wars. TFA didn't necessarily have to have that, but it also brought nothing to the table besides Finn and Kylo Ren, so it couldn't even do what the Prequels did in terms of introducing new things to possibly catch my interest. I also liked the secondary characters more in Rogue One. And it had the space battle. And land battle. So Rogue One. It just could've used some better main acting and tightening up the script in the middle.

That's sort of what I was getting at. I'm not sure if it was the cinematography or the actress herself, but her emotional reaction didn't really click with me. I think it would've worked better if it hadn't zoomed in so much on her face. It was overall a good scene.

The main complaint is that there's no real "team gets over their differences and makes friends" sort of scene. I'd have to rewatch it, but after Galen dies, they're just sort of a team once we jump back to the rebels. The movie doesn't have to be a master piece of characterization, but even the cliche action movie scene done competently should've been there. I also feel Forest Whitaker was underused as Saw Gerrera. There was a nice opportunity to make him a better foil for Vader, being a cybernetic mad man driven by his hatred. It would've helped justify why he just goes "fuck, I'mma die now" if he realizes how fucked up he's become. It's what I felt they were going for, but it also felt like I was supplying too much interpretation.

But in terms of everything else, it was great. There's a lot of cool shots and other bits of the world getting shown off that don't get too wink wink nudge nudge. It's a nice side story and the ending really does make the rest of the movie, even as much as I typically don't like that sort of thing. The ending bits with the rebels all running away from Vader leading right into the blockade runner taking off were great, and really drove home what the theme of the movie was.

If you consider the "heroes" to be mere objects pushing the story along and not of any value themselves, it becomes far more watchable knowing that they all die pointlessly as part of Krennic's machinations, as opposed to the muddy "heist" plot and poor characterization that falls apart halfway through. If you treat Krennic as the main character driving the plot with his selfish schemes who finally gets his just desserts as the two cinematically faceless factions vie over his defeat, it becomes nearly kino. Tarkin and Raddus become Lancaster and York with a common enemy - the vile parricide Richard.

Went to legoland for my nephew's birthday today and was hyped as fuck to see that they had a section for star wars in the model city gallery.

I was surprised they did big set pieces for ALL the current mainline Star Wars movies. Glad to see they didn't fall for the prequels are shit meme.

ROTJ got kinda shafted since it was just the endor imperial shuttle landing pad.

Holy fuck every time I watch the prequels again I understand something new about the politics of them. Like I only just realized that the reason Palpatine feels safe killing Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon in the beginning of Episode 1 is because the Chancellor secretly sent the Jedi to Naboo and if him or the Jedi were to cause an uproar over the Trade Federation killing 2 Jedi it would only make the Chancellor's shady usage of the Jedi known publically and get him ousted from power in which place Palpatine would step in as Chancellor. Or they would stay quiet about their deaths and Palpatine would still have gotten rid of a few Jedi causing problems with his plans. Either way it would be a win-win for Palpatine.

The reception to Rey has been very telling. Little girls love her, obviously, but what about the boys?

I remember Filoni speaking at some generic SJW "women in media" events. But unlike the usual trite spouted at these events, Filoni obviously brought some experience and wisdom to the panel. He explained that if you make a GOOD female character, one that develops healthily, one that's interesting, and strong, and earns her victories just like the men, then the boys watching will like her too.

It's that simple really. Look at Leia and Ahsoka, two characters beloved by both genders. They were brash as fuck when we first meet them, but with time and development, and some hard earned battles, they become as beloved as Luke and Obi-Wan.

But you look at Rey, who had everything handed to her on a silver platter, with any mystery about her being artificially locked away in a mystery box that probably has nothing substantial in it, and then they wonder why people dislike her and call her a mary sue. Sure, little girls got their big movie hero. Now what?

Every notable character in the movie, INCLUDING KYLO, was practically infatuated with her the second they met her.

I'm one of the biggest defenders of the ST (At least regarding the potential for TLJ and IX to be good) but you can't go into the rest of the trilogy without acknowledging the hole that Rey has been dug into. She spent the entire first movie stomping through all of her problems, even winning against the main villain in her first fight. Yes, I know Kylo was injured, but from a thematically story point of view, is it REALLY a good idea to make your hero a literal fucking powerhouse, and the villain a hopeless victim?

Unless they really do intend Kylo to retroactively become the hero, and Rey the villain, I can't see how their TFA characterization could possibly be beneficial for either of them.

I think Rey is written LIKE a mary sue, but she ISN'T a mary sue. When you get to the details everything she does could easily be explained. I feel like this is the ST's version of the barely explained politics of the PT being easily explainable when you really sit down and think about how it all works.

I'm not falseflagging, there are countless things that Rey does that are completely ridiculous, especially in the context of the Star Wars universe.

And before I continue, I am not one of those people that treats literally everything she does as bad. I actually think Rey is absolutely solid for most, if not all, of the third act. There was nothing wrong with the scene she she flies the Falcon for example. That often gets cited as evidence for her being a Mary Sue, but it actually fits perfectly into the series, much like Luke in the X-Wing and Anakin's Podrace.

However thinks take a nosedive after Jakku.

Despite hearing about the Legendary Han Solo and the Falcon, she didn't even recognize the ship, having never been inside it. Rey showed Han up by knowing how to fix the problem. A recurring theme with Rey/Mary Sue's is that they outdo everyone around them.

Being guided through the Force is a very different thing and you know it. The end of ANH is more comparable to the Jakku scene. It took Luke years to be able to Mind Trick without a teacher. It took Ezra about a year to do it WITH a teacher. I am sorry, but I am not accepting her "learning" it from Kylo and doing it in just two attempts.

He'd gotten a brief stint of training with Obi-Wan aboard the Falcon involving his shutting out his conscious, thinking self and acting on instinct and the rush of "feeling", which is where the power of the Force resides. What he did was not a BS asspull at all as he'd already gotten the instruction on how to command the Force.

The comics and books in the current canon have been illustrating his struggle to tap back into that feeling because he's always in situations where he's thinking more than feeling. And on the chances he is able to just feel, the sensation and resultant action come off as a complete surprise to him given it's expressed as a sudden explosion of pressure or energy. The wampa encounter on Hoth is the first so far we see of him since the end of the rut he falls into during that period of really connecting with the required feeling (after a brief struggle), which is why the lightsaber budges little by little before finally coming to his grasp.

The training he receives in TESB is what allows him to consciously command the Force without all the effort he displayed prior. His almost effortlessly calling his lightsaber back to his hand during the duel on Bespin is a subtle callback to the moment in the wampa's cave.

That's the thing. Do we know where they'll take these characters? We don't. Kylo's obviously not being set up as a traditional villain, even if he remains as a bad guy (which is increasingly unlikely). And if Rey was just a scrappy youth who has to come to grips with the Force, then she'd just be even more of a genderswitched Luke. I've postulated right from the start that taking the way of your protagonist being a prodigy, who has to learn not how to draw out their inner strenght in the first place, but how to control it, not let it dominate her as a destructive force, would rather significantly differentiate Rey's arc from Anakin's and Luke's.

Luke's challenge was how to gain power, to what means and resorts he'll go to to get what he wants. Rey's could be about having the power, but using it constructively, not letting it get into her head, not falling into temptation to crush and dominate.

As for her presentation in TFA - I believe JJ is to blame rather there being anything wrong with the character itself. He tried way too hard to make her impressive, to sell her as a strong protagonist instead of letting her be just a competent character naturally rising from the story. The problem is the script hammering her competence in over and over again. For every mistake she makes (and she actually makes quite a lot), the movie is there to remind us that no, actually, she's great and all. It's lack of confidence in crafting strong characters. Rey could have been a strong character by herself just fine and you wouldn't need to adjust that much, but JJ and Kasdan made her a manufactured strong character. And that's the problem.

In short, it's not hard for Rian to make everything work.

It's a type of ship. It isn't magically imbued with the essence of 'millennium falcon' so when she looks at the thing she immediately knows it just so happens to be the single YT-1300 Freighter that Han Solo owned.

Han had spent the last 10 years dicking around because his son went to the dark side and he lost his ship. Han isn't a robot that has the schematics for the millennium falcon inside his mind for perfect memory of every single detail.
