Hello, Storyteller.

Yo, Storyteller, real talk. The next time you get a minute, you NEED to catch up on Red Hood and the Outlaws. This book is fuckin' great. The Dark Trinity is one of the best new things in all of DC, I am not even kidding.
>>
>>94542005
For me...I think that pretty much everything that King is doing with the New Gods is nonsense.
Like, blatant nonsense.

But the themes could be interesting, but we will have to wait and see for those

>>94542025
The strong Christian overtones are weird to me. MM walking along the beach with Highfather felt very blunt. In this thread a long while back we discussed it and my position was King had to vary the tone: opening the issue with Mister Miracle slitting his wrists is not doing that I'm down for the book regardless but right now I don't feel excited by it, and I if the twists are what I expect and what's really spelled out in the issue, I don't think I will be.

Having Scott be called "The Son of God", like that, is a really horrible misuse of New Gods symbology.

Highfather is not "God". If anything, the Source is. King is just wrangling things to fit. Square holes, round pegs.

Actually, is he on any of the legacy titles? I remember him being off for October, but I haven't caught up wih Marvel's "announce a title but not a team" antics.

Costume, powers, fought crime and supervillains.

Maybe this is because I'm none too familiar with 4th World material, but I got nothing out of the MM issue. Like, I get what it's doing, but it ultimately felt like a huge pile of fuck all. The constant repetition of "Darkseid Is" didn't help. Please knock that shit off, it's annoying as fuck.

Phoneposting is way too slow for my verbosity.

I mostly wanted to say that, as a pretentiousfag myself, I think artsy comics like King's just don't resonate with everyone, and I think there are people who are gonna call his work shit no matter what, like Alan Moore.

Maybe it's that some people look at cape comics as just being for entertainment, which is why you have so much backlash against any sociopolitical commentary in them. Maybe some people are simply contrarian and hate that he's gotten so much praise. There's lots of reasons.

And I have seen plenty of detailed and legitimate criticism of his comics including Mister Miracle, so that's not to say they're unquestionably good. But I think that a vast portion of the hate comes from people just not liking his type of comic. And I think in the case of Batman people expect it to be for everyone, being their biggest flagship title.

That's a lot more than I wanted to type and I won't be able to discuss it much more until next thread, unfortunately.

To me the point of the issue was to introduce the emotional/mental state of the main character. It wasn't trying to introduce characters or anything. And it does not have the Rebirth banner so I don't think it's fair to judge it like those books.

Debatable if it succeeded obviously.

If there aren't creative liberties, there won't be the best the best story the individual can tell. Creators should be the drives, intellectual property the vehicle and audience the passenger. Besides King hasn't done something to disrespect the characters, don't really know what your problem is tbqh.

I have nothing against creative liberties, but if you're not going for a unique take - they should come from the main source.

With that, you can give it the twist because it comes from a place that makes sense.

But King has said some very dumb stuff in interviews and misused/misunderstood New Gods symbology in the issue itself and...well...it comes off as nonsense.
>>
>>94543305
Because highest form of artists expression respective to the medium/genre is intriguing. This is like saying don't read genre fiction, read only classic literature and not realizing a lot of classics do happen to be genre fiction.
>>
>>94543246
I agree, and I think King's biggest problem is he doesn't really understand the characters, but at the same time he understands what makes a GOOD character.

I also forgive it more because I'm not that big of a New Gods fan, but as a Wondiefag who has to deal with the praise of the New 52 Azzarello and Chiang run (which I like as a comic but resent the disregard for the character and her mythos), I can see why a NG fan would be frustrated or not want to read it at all.

In one comic Gotham would look like the most Gothic cityscape and in other one it would look like it's NYC and yet they're equally different from the Gotham initially conceptualized. If the story wants to be a standalone and form its internal logic and work with those going forward, let it be, that's what I mean by creative liberty. Capeshit has the most fluidity when it comes to different interpretation of same rule or premise of other narrative devices and depending on the situation it can absolutely be the best or worst thing but it definitely is a thing that's not shared largely in other mediums/genres or whatever.
As for your point about interview, I'd say judge the product when it comes out and how different it comes out from what it initially sounded like. But I can't really change your mind, I hope story is good and ends up appealing to you on as many levels as possible now.

I guess the root of what I'm trying to say is that King has said that this is "in continuity" and will have "long lasting effects", plus him going out and speaking with other creatives to learn more about the New Gods...

So it's not a new take, it's meant to ring true - and it doesn't. And I've accepted that it doesn't. I just hope the story is good.
>>
>>94543742

Trying to think of how to put my thoughts on continuity/faithful characterization ITT but just gonna settle with "no, it's not vitally important but it's not to be casually discarded either"

New Gods fans are looking to a New Gods comic for a particular reason. When you change something you ought to consider what you give up with what you get from the change. That Tom Scioli Transformers G.I. Joe comic basically was art from commercial children's toys, and it was wildly different from established comics of either property, but one of the reasons it was so great were the deep digs and references it build itself around.

I guess piggybacking off where the conversation has gone and I don't have a direct reply to anyone, but it is generally a balancing act on how much you can change. You want the spirit to be there but it can still be different. Like Ellis Thunderbolts isn't really Thunderbolts but the characters aren't largely misinterpreted so most people don't mind?
>>
>>94543846
I need to see where the religious stuff goes. He did the same thing with Omega Men and it wasn't Kyle's core character but I didn't care, because I don't really care for Kyle and it benefited the story. But as much of a characterfag as it might make me the New Gods are weirder and more interesting as a whole so you give up more by shifting the story like that.

Also on the Trumpian broken world/paranoia theme we all have to face up that Steve Gerber Foolkiller nailed that like nobody else is ever gonna about 25 years early.
>>
>>94543955
Making Scott so overtly Jesus is a red flag, because...Highfather isn't God. The whole idea is lost. The line just comes in very blunt and awkwardly due to that.

I think the New Gods, with regards to religious themes, already rode a thin line between interesting and cloying when Kirby did it.

It's not even a matter of continuity, people just can't handle different interpretation of their favorite character. There's an imagined space where people come together and decide that this is what I believe is true and it should be that way in not just my mind or people who shares my opinion but in the mind of everyone. Now that's non ironic characterfaggotry, you can justify it on different ways or say you are not like other people and shitpost when a tweet from ivygirl is posted in these threads. The level of self awareness you possesses should definitely be questioned by yourself at that point.

I mean, OK and it would be silly to pretend a character named 'High Father' has no Judeo-Christian influences, but Kirby's Highfather is phonetically and in one essential action the prophet Isaiah + the sort of science-mystical pantheon of the Marvel Gods. So I feel it is reasonable to say Kirby did not intend Highfather to be the literal Christian God or any direct analogue of that.
'
I can also see how if you were rolling from "This has to be fully interpreted by new readers" you might not bother with that and just simplify it to 'He's God'. It just depends on the story you're aiming for.

Also there's a perception that every female character has to be a role model, which is what got Harley into this position in the first place.

Like, Zealot? Great female character. NOT a role model, like at all.

I actually don't think Harley would ever have gotten into this in the first place if DC didn't decide to put her in kid friendly stuff. People who liked her were usually high school age or older, more than old enough to understand that a bad bitch is a bad bitch, and if your daughter wants to be a bad bitch, there's probably reasons for that other than liking Harley Quinn.

I was watching slasher movies in elementary school. It's hard to say I turned out fine since I'm on 4chan, but it's not like I'm a murderer or anything.

I can't even begin to tell you how much I need a Lois Lane mini in my life.

LoSH dating sim is the real Source.

Usurped?
Not directly no. The Old Gods all killed each other.

Their energies, and atoms, what have you helped bring into life the twin planets of Apokolips and New Genesis.

The hand has been interpreted in numerous ways but it's almost definitely not Real-life God. I say "almost" because it's possible Gardner Fox was implying that but I highly doubt it.

I think it's accepted by most now that it was just ambiguous and not necessarily a literal hand, but the first canon explanation was in CoIE, Anti-Monitor reaches back through time to stop the universe from being created in the first place, and Spectre grabs his hand to stop him, so it was either AM or Spectre's hand we actually saw, but I can't remember which one.

Most people think this has been retconned but I can't recall ever seeing a different explanation for it.

As for New Gods I'm not an expert but it was intended as a pseudo-continuation of Thor and IIRC it was implied if not outright stated that the Old Gods were the Asgardians, wiped out by Ragnarok.

Later on other writers especially Morrison have reinterpreted them to be ALL of classic mythology instead of just the Norse, but I can't remember what the explanation for them existing simultaneously was.

Both.
Baldur is stated as the origination for New Genesis
But Apokolips gets a more cryptic "it sprang from an evil sorceress" thing.

Enchantress I guess?

Why can she never catch a break?

Stop bullying Mercedes, dammit!

And stop bullying Katsuda too!
>>
>>94544809
IIRC with COIE there was a hand there and the AM was trying to replace it and Spectre just stopped him from replacing it but the original hand was neither of theirs.

I should just go to my bookshelf and look this up again but I'm too lazy.

>Now Thor I actually DO know about and I imagine they'd be referring to Hela since she was a much bigger figure than Enchantress and has a role in the actual Ragnarok legend.

Ahh fuck!
I've been thinking "Enchantress maybe" for ages!

Hela makes so much sense, thanks!

He was still on the credits. But the order seemed to suggest she reports directly to Kaminski not Berganza.

>>94545005
Berganza isn't allowed to be in the same room as any woman

I'm aiming for the fancy seafood place I've been wanting to go or the ramen shop, except Saturday night a few weeks before before school starts is shit timing
>>
>>94545083
Yeah I just mean it's too soon to say something has changed regarding Berganza at the company since he's still listed in the credits. They might just be shielding her with Kaminski or something to avoid direct contact.
>>
I must have missed something, what's the deal with Berganza?

A history of sexual harassment issues, last incident was maybe 5 years ago but people are still skeeved that he still has a job.

Last I checked the word on the street seemed like he can't get let go because of contractual bullshit, but the rumor was that they cope by minimizing his interactions with female creators and generally not hiring women to work as editors in his group.

The storyteller was doing the little shorts that got posted through Dark Horse earlier, then realized a few days ago that they missed the last few issues of Vol 3. I think they plan on finishing this 120 page graphic novel, then continuing the rest of the shorts.
>>
>>94557518
They usually announce big editorial shuffles so I guess it would depend on when they'd do it, but we'd stop seeing his name in credits if he was gone even without announcement.
>>
>>94557968
Would we? Or would he just not be on new books?
