It can be pretty pretentious, yeah. Still think it's an okay show. The writing is really spread apart an that makes it convoluted, this show really doesn't benefit from an over arching plot just due to how bad the writing team is, was much better when it was more episodic.

it's mostly the critics that act more high and mighty than they have any right to.

Here's an episode re-animated by a collaboration of 164 animators around the world

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDuLP-ImfgM

The critics can never do something even close to this, yet they act like they're better than people like these fans who have drive, passion, skill, talent, and the self discipline to see something like this through.

Pic related.
>>
>>94540836
What's it's pretense?
>>
>>94540906
You just hit the nail, it's so meh it's average for the most part, but when it tries hard it is just so in your face I can only compare it to a kid who is very proud of his finger painting.

It's just so mediocre you can't help but to humor it. If anything the pretentiousness comes from the so called art teacher that is the fandom.

I mean seriously this cartoon can go 26 episodes of nothing happening only to make an episode of character development happening in a musical while everyone cries only to flanderize the characters 8 episodes later and resume the cycle of 20 episodes of nothingness.

Can you even call the feeling of boredom to be pretentious? If the answer is yes I guess this could be pretentious.
>>
>>94549813
That's pretty impressive. I still don't like the show, and I especially don't like the fans, but I won't let it be said that some of them aren't dedicated.

In my opinion the message of 'everyone is a good person and hurting deep down' and that the world and humanity is such a good thing is kinda annoying. I get it's supposed to be optimistic and in line with what Steven thinks, but the way this show portrays it it comes across as really naive even compared to other kid shows with similar messages. The world really doesn't work like that.

Idk it just really bothers me in this particular show for some reason. Any one else bothered by it?

Don't know why you would.
The show constantly kicks Steven down for his believes.
He wants to help everyone but sometimes it bites him in his ass.
Him being nice has got him into a lot of shit many times.
trying to be nice to Peridot and telling her about how Earth is full of life lead to many of his friends being captured.
And When he tried to heal Eyeball and helped her out she tried to murder him.

The show says that Pacifism is a good but also shows its downsides and how hard pacifism is to achieve.
It one of the main things I love about the show.
Plus I think its awesome to finally have a show that's all "Fuck yeah humanity."
Theirs nothing I hate more then the bullshit message that all humans are bad.
One of the main reasons I fucking hate TWD.

I think it's a show that's enamoured with the idea of being something really emotional that kids will remember many years later. Key point being it likes the IDEA of it, but it doesn't seem to actually go through the effort of building up to being emotional, or having enough variety to make those emotional scenes stand out. It really desperately wants to be those scenes on youtube of famous sad moments in movies that everyone creams themselves over how deep and moving they are.

I think if instead of a bunch of sad notes, they picked a couple of the bigger more substantial ones, and eliminated the rest to give more breathing room for other things people would find interesting as well as the ability to develop those other sad points much further, it would be an overall more balanced show.

As it is it is pretentious, in the sense that it runs on the pretense of having being built on something large enough for the audience to feel sad about, when it hasnt even come close to that point. It's like a wannabe webcartoonist who wants to do drama in their wacky joke comic but instead of building up to it they go right for LOSS.
>>
>>94541054
That's not the show being pretentious, that's just the show having depth. You could argue about the exact amount of depth, but it doesn't pretend to have more than it actually does.

>The show constantly kicks Steven down for his believes.

Most of the consequences are either so minor or are so delayed that it really doesn't matter. It took several seasons before Steven's speech to Peridot got his friends in trouble. The eyeball thing (and bismuth to an extent) just went away for a while. Sure Steven was spooked/had 'emotional baggage' for an episode or two after that but that sorta dissipated with nothing to it. Every other pacifistic romp he's had really didn't bite him in the ass, in fact thanks to deus ex machinas he often gets out of situations that should punish him for his pacifism more often than not.

>Plus I think its awesome to finally have a show that's all "Fuck yeah humanity."
Theirs nothing I hate more then the bullshit message that all humans are bad.
One of the main reasons I fucking hate TWD.

The opposite is arguable true with this show by painting humanity as better than it is. I like balance in my shows/what i watch and read. Having humans be portrayed as amazingly awesome or extremely evil and bad pisses me off because it overgeneralizes an entire species and negates any and all chances for shades of grey.

>But there are human characters in the show that do bad things and bad human characters like Kevin and Marty

You mean characters that are gags or don't show up for the majority of the show that have very little impact on the plot other than in flashback sequences? yeah…that's not really a good case for balance.

and also

>to finally have a show

Yeah, no. There are quite a few shows that go 'Fuck yeah humanity'. Even today.

Yes.
>Concrete from the SU Artbook has been accused of racial stereotyping. Despite this, plenty of fans like her design. Still, many people were upset, prompting Rebecca Sugar to give an apology. Some people accept the apology. Others think her design is incredibly racist and accuse anyone who likes her design or defends the Crewniverse as also being racist, and refuse to accept the apology until the person who designed Concrete is fired. Yet others point out that Concrete as shown in the SU Artbook is nothing but a character concept and claim anyone who would call Rebecca Sugar "racist" after creating a show that promotes acceptance and diversity is no more than seeing racism where it doesn't exist.
>>
>>94557824
>Yeah, no. There are quite a few shows that go 'Fuck yeah humanity'. Even today.

>>
>>94557976
>Concrete has lent credence to one half of another broken base, namely fans who were already pointing out problems the show has had in the past in terms of its nonwhite-coded characters: Sugilite being the only fusion among the main three to be violent and out of control, borrowing from Hindu imagery and mythology and culture for characters who are not Hindu or are not coded that way, the whole Sardonyx arc and how it treated Garnet, the Human Zoo (the maintaining of which was once a disgusting real practice that the Crewniverse did not seem to be aware of) and the treatment of Bismuth compared to the treatment of Lapis and Peridot. The concept art of Amethyst in a costume labeled as a 'chola' bodysuit has also rubbed some people the wrong way.

>>
>>94549813
That video was blocked in my country on copyright grounds, but if the whole thing looks as bad as that thumbnail does, fuck it.

Steven Universe is objectively bad. It's badly-written badly-drawn tumblr toonboom trash and if its fans could argue against that, they'd talk to people that hate it and debate them, instead of circlejerking and "Fuck da haters"ing like a bunch of Katy Perry fangirls. Their fanbase wouldn't be seen as the most toxic and cancerous fandom on the planet by everyone outside of the hugbox.

It's a bad show. Its only fans are people too stupid to see that. Those idiot fans don't want to admit they've been duped into watching over 100 episodes of atonal garbage, so they lash out at anyone with standards they and their show can't reach. It is, after all, what SJW policy says to do: "Don't compete, complain!".

What are you talking about, Steven still is affected by his unsuccessful
encounters with his enemies. This was seen even as far forward as him jumping to the prison ship, and later when he talks to his hologrpahic mom conjuring. It hasn't dissipated in the least, he's just not constantly hamfistedly angting over it, it's much more human the way it is now.

As for showing that humans are too good? Not at all, Marty, Onion, Kevin, Steven, Connie, Lars, most of these characters have good an bad aspects, we mostly see the good side but to say they're too positive when guys like Marty cut and run on thier own kid, or Lars and Kevin constantly being a dick. But you just kinda eschew what doesn't fit your argument.

Bullshit, he literally doesn't think about it until it's extremely convenient. Even when he as the opportunity to actually take some action with little consequence he still doesn't fucking do anything. The Gems said they were willing to answer any questions about the past, yet he doesn't even take that opportunity. It really doesn't.

>most of these characters have good an bad aspects, we mostly see the good side but to say they're too positive when guys like Marty cut and run on thier own kid, or Lars and Kevin constantly being a dick. But you just kinda eschew what doesn't fit your argument.

What the actual grammar man.

Fucking tumblrinas.

By "The next best thing", he means "The waterbender that could bend all water on the planet at will with a broken gem because fuck powerscaling" is the next best thing compared to the metalbending fantasy-scientist in a series where tech does whatever the plot and writers need it to do.

By the way, whose "Deep theory" was confirmed when that "Lars is Lion now" asspull came out of nowhere to save Steven because the "There's a resistance group on Homeworld itself" asspull couldn't save him?

Literally what?

>It really doesn't

Yes, it does. It only ever gives the illusion of change like a fucking Telltale game rather than actually changing the show in a substantial way.

Oh, Peridot and Lapis are finally part of the main cast now? Nope, let's just lock them away into a farm away from everywhere else once that pointless Cluster Arc is over, and when we actually do visit them they are actually insipid husks of their former selves.

Oh but wait, what that? You want more Jasper? Well we can't have that, now can we? Let's just sweep her under a rug various times and pretend she never existed!

But what about Homeworld you say? Oh don't worry about that, because they are actually the only known alien species in fiction dumber than fucking Irkens! They're so incompetent a two teenage boys can easily dupe them. They can't possibly be a threat, so Steven can play as long as he fucking wants to until the writers want a ratings boost.

It's a show that goes in fucking circles. It wants to move forward, but it's such chicken shit that any progress with anything is either reversed or just completely pointless.

She's coming back you autist.

>"There's a resistance group on Homeworld itself"

There is literally no fucking way I can ever take Homeworld serious as a threat. I just can't. Time and time again they prove themselves to be utterly incompetent at even the simplest of tasks.

>"Hey, there are a bunch of off-colors roaming around free in the old kindergartens. Should we send a platoon of robonoids backed by competent handlers to sweep the area, clearing each section of tunnels in military formation? All the chambers are interconnected so it's impossible to not flush them out eventually."
>"Nah, just send like... three robonoids and have them wander around down there. It'll be fine."

I think the Diamonds were competent at one point but after Pink's death, White's death and Blue's perpetual mourning they're holding on to what little scraps of dignity they have left.

That has nothing to do with the status quo.

This.

>White's death

Nah, bro. She's being voiced by Christine Ebersole, so unless we get enough flashbacks to justify getting a second Broadway star on the payroll then White is alive.

>That has nothing to do with the status quo

It has every fucking thing to do with the status quo. It has always been built up that homeworld is supposed to be such a severe threat that the CG's are actually in hiding so that they would just forget about their existence. The thing is, they CAN'T have such a threat because otherwise it would dominate the show and eventually get rid of the original status quo. So, in order to keep the status quo they make Homeworld as stupid and inept as possible so that they can constantly loom this illusion of a threat over the audiences head, without being anywhere near a legitimate problem.

For all Homeworld knows, the Cluster Bomb is still ticking and well, despite their only soldiers sent to check on it have either disappeared or rebelled. And of the two hostages they captured, is still at Homeworld while the other straight up stole a high class ship.

did anyone ever scan that artbook?

Got a source to back that shit up, fucko? And even then, it's not like they aren't just going to get rid of her again even if it is true.

Makes perfect sense.
Topaz just wants to be together and she hates her job and hates being told what to do.
So seeing two friends who despite being in big trouble still look out for each other.
Topaz wants to join them because she can finally be free to be the fusion she wants to be.

Yes.
