It's either or, and if more people honestly and knowingly decide that they're not capable of marrying in this day and age, then it's good news that human economies have many more opportunities for meaningful service than at any other time in history.

You make it sound like a horribly unsound investment, but have you considered what it would, to be literal here, actually take to invest in your old age without kids? You have to put away ~20% (if you're in the middle class) of your monthly pay toward savings if you want to retire comfortably, which will likely be by age 65, and that doesn't take account of bad investments or economic crises eliminating your savings. And none of that money will gain you someone's love and affection either.

tl;dr Saving up for one's old age, whether by investing in kids or savings accounts, is never easy.

Yup. And in your 20% example most people won't be able to do that until they have hit a decent amount of financial success. Even less with kids. It's clear he has empathy for those affected in the outcome of the situation he's describing, anon is just making it clear he does not agree with it. Plus they're being more judgmental about his situation and try to persuade him into changing his view instead of accepting that that's how he wants to do things. It's completely fair for him to judge them about their stance as well. He looked at their stance and views it unfavorably.
