Back in the early 2000's from personal experience I was a highschool student in Alabama where on a biology exam there was an essay question simply asking explain how evolution works and several students refused to answer because of religion and then complained loudly about failing the test for not answering it.
And for not personal in across the country news in early 2000's 10-15 there was also national news about court cases in Kansas trying to block teaching evolution. Where you not alive 10-15 years ago?
