It's political but not quite intrigue. It's a philosophical exploration of the concept of control and what it means to be human.

What begins with Paul's development of prescience ends up questioning the value of stability and how it ends up enslaving people to themselves.

This is presented through a story of science fiction conflicts.
Dune is about a decadent galactic empire brewing its own doom by trying to bury a potential rival for power.
Dune Messiah is about responsibility, the sacrifices involved in maintaining power and also about questioning the value of change and what gets left behind.
Children of Dune closes a first cycle, as the new empire falls into its own decadence not by the hand of one leader but several people in the government who carry the real power. It's also about true sacrifice for a specific goal and how difficult it is for human minds to carry it out.
God Emperor is a lesson way past decadence and into outright enforced mediocrity. It's about absolute power but also about the pointlessness of half-baked revolutions.
Heretics of Dune explores why change needs to be maintained and enforced against natural tendencies.
Chapterhouse: Dune closes the cycle by pointing out that this enforced control can't be one sided, or else it risks falling into the old patterns again.

It's a story of humanity trying to escape humanity itself to ensure its own survival.

Dune has Paul subtly uniting talents built into him to become a kickass future-seeing warrior. Bene Gesserit training gives him control of his body's functions, which allows him to regulate his own metabolism, conduct movements perfectly and modulate his abilities to communicate so he can make people do what he wants (the jedi mind trick was based on this, basically... well, jedis in general). His training as a Mentat turns him into a living computer that can arrange data neatly and use perfect logic to come up with the right solutions. And finally his unique biology combined with the Water of Life allows him to access Other Memory, the genetic memory from the countless generations before him, their knowledge and life experience.
It also has a more fucked up version of this with the ABOMINATION of a baby being born with Other Memory unlocked. Meaning a fully conscious baby.
Dune Messiah keeps this up with a story of betrayal. It's a bit more about "political intrigue", and it's rather short. Gholas are introduced, not-zombies/not-clones of people that are grown with all their abilities but none of their memories. The world expands by establishing two planets that push the limits of future technology. One biological in the makes of gholas and the other electronic (though their role takes a while to be significant).
Children has the, well, children of Dune's main character dealing with the fact that they are Abomination. It pushes Paul's son into the same path Paul was taking, but he takes a very special detour and REJECTS HIS HUMANITY.
God Emperor stars Hedonismbot as a giant worm-man. With his own personal military force slash cult slash harem of hot women.
Heretics has fucking awesome Miles Teg, Mentat military general, who develops unexplained new abilities that not only give him a form of prescience but also make him the fucking Flash.

Millennia pass between Children and God Emperor, and so do between God Emperor and Heretics. Chapterhouse is pretty much a direct sequel to Heretics and continues the story about the invasion of the sex-ladies and how they fight back against them.
