Elephant in the room, besides hiatuses the show is simply not very good. And yes that includes the Yojimbo 3 parter. Do not say it was good, it was mostly centered on babysitting that unlikable shitty pug kid character. Terrible idea.

My issue with the Usagi crossover is that it made the same mistake that the previous two Usagi crossovers did. They portray Usagi as a scowling, ultra-serious, no-nonsense loner who resorts to violence quickly and never smiles or has fun.

It's like they never read any of the actual Usagi comics. And what's weird is that all 3 generations of the cartoon have portrayed him this way.

Because the writers who got me on board in season 1 left, and the moment halfway through season two where the 80s Turtles jump off the roof felt like a thematically appropriate time to cut ties with the show

Yeah, the pug kid was unlikeable by design, but the plot was clearly based on Usagi's second issue. They just changed Tomoe for Turtles and lord Noriyuki for Kintaro.

This. I watched it every week as best I could up until they finished off Shredder but then I didn't know when it was returning and accidentally missed a week. Then I just lost all interest. Fuck 'em for airing it so randomly it's impossible to keep up on.

He needs to contribute to the group dynamic. In this case he was what the turtles could be. A professional endgame. He blew the ever loving fuck out of them in terms of problem solving, diplomacy, maturity and fighting prowess. I was surprised how strong they made him relative to the turtles initially but now his 'niche' in their group makes sense.
He is a pro to their teenage goof.

its not too surprising that in a straight up fight Usagi fucking rocks them. They have him beat when it comes to stealth I suppose (because yeah they are ninja)

It would be nice if it was still Sakai at the helm to maintain the tone that the crossover eps held (like its pretty fucking obvious that Usagi was cutting down some mother fuckers off horseback)

Was also surprised they went with that voice for Usagi yet it still kinda worked (was expected a higher voice like from the 2003 crossovers). Would still have to see how he would sound when trying to do chill Usagi (as mentioned he was mostly no nonsense the entire time)

I also want a series just so we could get an ep or two of Jei just travelling with that girl. SMITING EEEEEVIL along the way of course

Yeah, I get what >>94511586 is saying, but Usagi had only to show his more cheerful side once or twice to be a nearly perfect adaptation.

The pug escort plot was very meh for most of the time, but the very end the golden child twist kicked in and it was pretty cool.

That "Sakai death bubble" was all I ever wanted to see in an animated version of Usagi, but I never believed it can be pulled off outside of a comic. They left it for the very end and it took me by surprise by how good it looked.

You can clearly sense Stan's involvement in the first and third episode when Usagi fights Jei. His fingerprints also appear in comic art flashbacks, the horseback chase fight scene, those floating letters when Usagi screams and the title and end card of the crossover. The middle episode, however, was VERY off.

Basically, there were other people who also had a vote on how this was going to look and they are leagues below the storytelling legend who is Stan, which clearly shows.

1. Timeslot is weird
2. The show's quality went down. The story became meh and it kept reverting stuff to status quo all the time. Most people jumped off after Season 4 (if they hadn't already after Season 3).
