This short does a really nice job of combining 2D and CG elements, which is pretty hard on a student budget/talent. Too bad no one will recognize the short for that and instead take it's success as a victory for the gays rather than technical achievement by the artists.

The heart represents his feelings, which keeps trying to reach his crush, the only thing holding it back being himself suppressing his feelings. In the scene when Sherwin is outed to Jonathan and the rest of his peers, a crowd of other students appear to look at them with disgust. Everyone is staring, and Sherwin's heart LITERALLY breaks. Being outed against your will feels exactly like that. Straight people will NEVER experience this, it'll never be relatable to them, and it's not meant to be relatable to them. Easier to take seriously than fictional characters "falling in love" with women.

It was cute, but the cartoon heart felt like a cop-out. Making the boy's attraction a personified unstoppable force takes away from the characters. It would have been more honest, and a better film, if they had found a way to do it without the heart.
