Its like how Lance still had a rifle even with the red bayard, or how Allura got a whip with the blue bayard. How the bayard forms depends on the Paladin, not the color. The same could go for the weapons they each give to Voltron

We didn't see the original Paladins (except for Zarkon) using their bayards outside of Voltron so we don't know for sure how summoning the Voltron weapons actually works.

I was rather wary about it after how much the bonds had been built up and emphasized, but I thought they played it rather well.

Red only accepting Lance as its pilot because he acknowledged and put his trust in Keith was a good way of going about it. By comparison though Blue taking in Allura wasn't nearly as understandable.

Black rejecting Shiro in favor of Keith I think is likely to play into Black knowing /something/ is wrong with Shiro; time will tell what that is.

I think the show is slightly too cavalier about killing off the Galra commanders. It's good that they are killing off a few minor characters to make it seem like the stakes are high and people aren't totally safe, but so far they have been killing the commanders off at such a high rate that we never get to know any of them. At least two should survive multiple seasons just so the audience can have some familiar faces among the minor enemy characters.

Very badly done all around. The only one that even kind of made sense or had any setup whatsoever was Keith, and even then most of the setup was emphasizing that he didn't want it and that his connection with Red was special enough that only it would ever rush to her pilots rescue. After a season where Keith had to earn Red's respect, and another where Shiro had to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt he was the real Black Paladin, it felt like a slap to the narrative and all that growth. In particular, Lance was by far the worst shift, as he honestly seemed to care about his lion, they've literally been together since the very start, and nothing he's shown made him feel like a good fit for Red. His sudden acceptance didn't work at all. Allura was just downright "Here, have a lion after we shift this one around", completely hollow and just for the sake of giving it. She wanted a lion, and then blue just dropped the sheild and everything is done.

It wouldn't be so bad but they went on, and on, and on, and fucking on some more about how special this bond was and how important it was and how connected they were and yadda yadda yadda. Hilariously, we saw next to none of these connecting moments with Pidge and especially Hunk, who never had a single real bonding moment with his lion, and both of them kept theirs! It was almost like they went out of their way to undo the last two seasons of buildup.

Between lacking any standout action scenes, a lot of setup that has no payoff, and next to nothing given about Lotor besides the most generic 'smart guy' moves, I'm really starting to worry about this show.

Season 1 would have ended with the Galra infiltration of the castle, which was set up before that, the fight with the gladiator that had been earlier shown, Pidge's identity being revealed which had been hinted at, and the ship setting off into space which was the goal the whole time. It would actually have fit just fine for a closed off season, as it had a clear start, clear boss and clear goal that they reach.

Season 2 would have split with the episode where we found out about the Black Lion being tracked, but aside from that it's mostly a same old monster of the week thing. Though obviously there would have been bigger fights and more action, it still wouldn't really feel like anything more than setup either, so you're right on that one.
