I haven't read any of the old stuff yet, I jumped into marvel X-men from the early 2000s onward, I liked Cyclops in; Astonishing, The Grant Morrison run, Uncanny (the one with Tempus and the Cuckoos), Messiah Complex.

Cyclops has consistently been a good character, though for different reasons at different times.
The joke about him being always right comes from the fact that Marvel writers are hacks and constantly try to "develop" their characters at Scott's expense (think of Batman telling Superman about how much of a boy scout he is), but end up writing stupid shit that makes Scott's stick-in-the-mud attitude right all along. Then they try to make HIM into the edgy antihero, and suddenly it works, because the situation is bad enough to warrant such "edginess".
