Since we're heading into the next part of our story we decided to update the main character's looks.

The current ones are actually pretty old concepts, so we wanted to move them into appearances more befitting of their personalities.

Wanted to include this question in this thread, to see what "style" you personally fall under:

"How do you guys handle your comic writing? Macro ----> micro (as in, making arcs made up of smaller arcs, etc) or vice versa (writing chapter by chapter in filling out semi-vague plot-lines)?"
>>
>>94489792
I mean, I don't want to give away everything. Unless people want it. But I didn't want to flood the thread
>>
>>94489882
just summarize it
>>
>>94489747
Nah man, I'm just drunk and bored.
There you go another fucking idea: A webcomic about a guy being drunk and bored all the time its called: Bored Drunkless

Its a crippling depressing tale about a man further escaping the mundanity of life, in the bottle which becomes less and less effective over time, so he has to drink more and more.

A sober reflection on the nature of the struggling artist. You'd win the fucking webcomic equivalent of a fucking oscar for that melodramatic crap.

I'm on fucking fire tonight.

Hey that gives me an idea.
>>
>>94489926
>it's about a bored drunk
>calls it bored drunk-less

>>
>>94489926
A webcomic about a man that is literally on fire. Like all the time. Everything he touches gets immolated. And he's very insecure about being naked all the time.

Its called: Burning Man.

And here I thought I'd finally be able to show off some stuff, but it looks like it's going to take another couple months to get anywhere passable.
>>
>>94492399
If you want to struggle a bit less, while doing the linearts and what not look for any "stabilizer/stabilization" option on the brush or pen tool. I know SAI, ClipStudio and FireAlpaca have it and it works wonders since when using a tablet you don't have the same control of your pulse so it helps a lot.
>>
>>94492517
Didn't know that existed, I'll give it a shot right now, thanks.
>>
>>94492399
The learning curve is high, but you will get it. It might help to tape a piece of paper to your tablet to start with, if its surface is too smooth, but eventually you'll wanna just get used to the lessened friction it affords you
>>
>>94492601
There's also a freestanding stabilizer called lazynezumi, basically just released by this one guy. He's a bro and a half, so

Fan comics - good way to practice or a shitty crutch?
>>
>>94493756
How exactly would making a fan comic be a shitty crutch?
Because you're not making the characters/subject matter?
That's like an entirely different area of making comics than actually drawing them.

A lot of classics started out as fanfiction. It's basically just an exercise where you're given the setting and characters, and you have to do the rest.
Fuck, in a manner of speaking all tv or screenplay writing is fanfiction, you have to take the info given by the franchise creator and try to do your best fanfic of it

Sorry about that delay. I fell asleep.

Here's a brief background of the world before the summary

>Takes place in a world where the three main factions
>One is a group that believes machine enhancements to replace broken and damaged limbs and organs is vital to humanities survival known as The Children of Autumn
>Other factions that's incredibly religious and believes that said machine enhancements are heresy. This faction makes up 80% of the world population
>Third faction is an offshoot of the Children of Autumn known as The Godless. These are people who took machine enhancements to the point of madness and have become abominations who tend to lose their sanity before completely replacing all flesh with metal.
>The Gods, to show their love for humanity, sends an angel to Earth once a year to protect them from evil. Each angel has a Ward who's raised at birth to follow the angel until their dying day.

>>
>>94493991
Is not that fanfiction is a bad practice, since you still practice your prose and plot-character management. Is more like fanfiction is so full of 12-year-olds writing shit that it gets a bad fame.
>>
>>94495452
Nice job. How'd you get so good at cloth folds so quickly?
>>
>>94495452
Good job adding the clothing folds. The only small complaint i'd have is with her being distinguished from the background via having the same thin lines as it (adding some weight to her left contour) but I'd have to see what you do with the rest of the picture coloring wise
>>
>>94495444
Plot summary

>It's been a year since the last angel had came to earth and a new one is about to arrive, named Camila.
>The ceremony that welcomes her is attacked by a Group of Godless and they removes her wings but keeps her alive.
>A nearby group of soldiers finds the temple and the massacre and the entire group dies fighting a Godless, all except for a young soldier named Isaac
>Camila's Ward died in the attack and Isaac becomes the new ward
>Camila wants to find out why the Godless attacked because they're normally not organized.
>Turns out the Children of Autumn entrusted a young convert named Silas Harkin to be a liaison to the Godless and to use them as a weapon should war break out.
>Silas Harkin however has become enthralled by the Godless and their quest to create a being known as "The Advent of Machines" who will usher in an age of machine perfection. to create this being he took Camila's wings thinking he can use them to create his own divine being.

Yada yada yada, they need to stop him.

OK well seems you at least got a "dynamic" right here, in that the villain has some bigger plans but made it personal for the hero by taking her wings, are the wings the source of her angelic powers or something like that? That way it makes things harder for the hero and also makes it even more of a personal offense.

Now I remember your concern on the last thread was about your villain being lame by being a guy who stands in the shadows pretty much. With this settled, I think that as long as we get some good POVs with the villains it should work fine. Give us the 2 perspectives in a puzzle-like manner and it should keep things interesting.

Yes. Also, the big thing that the villain holds over the heroes head is that if the wings themselves are destroyed than the angel who belongs to them is unable to maintain their form on Earth so he gets out of situations with that.

tumblr
tapas/webtoons
comic fury/smackjeeves/comicgenesis

Tumblr has a reblog system that let's your pages be shared more easily to reach more people, the platform itself is huge and it has a theme that is kinda easy to use (on our first post in the thread). You have to keep on check the dimension of your files though.

Tapas or Webtoons has the same layout for every comic ever but it also has an established community and you can get some revenue if you get popular enough too. You can also update on this site along with your other main as a mirror site of sorts.

Comic Fury and similars are free webcomic hosting sites and although some need you to have a bit of knowledge on code, they also have the plus of having some communities established already.

I think most of those free hosting sites don't require you to know any code, that part is just optional. But if you don't use any, your site will just be the bare blank site with all of their auto-generated navigation links just in the default spot
>>
>>94496803
Neat. I would appreciate a link to the best one of those tutorials and/or the one that focuses most on how you make your choice of where to put folds. I'm okay at drawing the folds and even shading the folds, but I can never decide where they are or what shape they should have in any logical way. At best right now I have a few common folds memorized

>>94496834

The only porn I ever wrote was on my awkward teen days on roleplaying forums and boy I knew nothing about real life sex back then. I guess the more you know how it actually works the more awkward it gets, since nowadays I think about my characters having their cute lovemaking but I can't put it on paper, let alone draw it.

Well yeah, that is what the male octopus's 7th tentacle is for. Called a heterocolydon or something like that. That's natural and beautiful. Then it turns into a tragic beauty when the parents just up and die, and if they don't manage to fuck, they just die at a preprogrammed age anyway unless you castrate them. That is the way of tentacles.

It's stretched for comedy. (The pants.)

As for the "ass," he's pulling away so that nothing would show. As I think most people would if someone tried to expose their dicks and coochies lol.

tragic? yeah. recent? not really. but what's important is that not that many people outside of the UK know about it, and the ones who do go overboard on feeling bad about it and generally overcompensate. >Main MC is Life who is a bitter girl who doesn't like her job because everything is mediocre and what's the point anyway if the perfect things she does will go to waste themselves? Better die before you do more useless stuff with your life you punks! She is a more classic loner in that she is always so angry she doesn't really want to hang up with anyone else.
>Second MC is Death who is kind of a sadist with the living because he gets a good laugh at their stupidity and how easy they are to manipulate. He actually has a better apreciation for life than Life herself and he thinks she is wasting her own life by being always angry, so that is why he tries to make her enjoy her job with different methods. He is more of a Stepford loner in that he is the guy who is always cracking jokes and nobody really hates, but he isn't the "best friend" of anybody and doesn't hang up with anyone else either.
>The story is mostly about gags of Life frustrated at her job or shenanigans with the other personifications (especially Death) who try to cheer her up with relatibe success.
>At some point after many mutual "motivational speeches", Life and Death get to be loners together because only they truly understand and like each other.

I'm sharing yesterday's page. After what an anon said, I've decided to try and do manual shading instead of painting greys on phoshop. Now it looks somewhat like UY, which is kinda cool; and with a little work it might end looking better than before, and saving time to boot if I get good enough. If people like this artstyle more, I might rework the previous pages to fit the new style.

Also please tell me the text is right, I've triple checked this shit already and made a second version for the site.

Male MC has gone through a lot of shit so he is a bit of a coward and a jerk on the surface but he actually cares a lot for his teammates and helps in small ways as much as he can.
Female MC 1 has her vanity up to eleven and is a straw feminist, but she genuinely cares for male MC because she sees him as a small brother who needs protection (even though he is the oldest of the team, being a manlet doesn't help I guess)
Female MC 2 is nervous and shy but she is the Heart of the team, not too naive but still wants to believe on a bright side to things.
The story has many huge conflicts on the background but at the end of the day it is really about the characters overcoming their flaws and becoming a real family, supporting each other when the enemy of the saga comes targeting any of them.

Hurrying the first arc too much because you're so eager to get something down. You'll wish you'd taken the time to expand it. This is secretly the main reason everyone wants to redo their original stuff. They say it's about the art, but really it's because it could use an expansion. What's sad is anime adaptations of manga tend to do the opposite and speed up the early stuff, which can be the best.
There are some definite other things to avoid, like getting settled in and only later finding out your site sucks, or not keeping track of stuff like continuity or maybe wishing later on you'd used a tag system to keep track of character appearances..

Not much of an ending, but wanted to avoid another overly long one. It's nice seeing Riv do something after just huddling in fear for several strips in a row.
Also glad I thought of a reason to do an overhead shot of Tzara Autostrada (who is otherwise too tall for that to make sense). Trying to take that advice about moving the camera around more, not just leaving it side-on all the time.

Strangely true. There are situations where it's best to be self-deprecating and try to play it cool, but projects like this, people expect a certain level of excitement and self-promotion. You can start being overly humble once you've made it big.

I think this works fine looking at how the scene plays and looks. Although just one word of advice, maybe you should place a bit more effort on the typesetting, because as it is hard to read what it says on the caption. Not saying you should get a font, just to make the writing cleaner too, more like what you used for the balloon.

>Main dude is a sleep troubled paranoid NEET

It's all about trying to solve a mystery behind people dying in their sleep after experiencing certain symptoms. He gets them too, so insomnia is pretty useful.
They all start going psychological horror crazy too so the fact that he's already pretty fucked up in the head plays into that.
>>
>>94522841
Thanks, I don't think I'll be handwriting the speech or anything just because I can't keep stuff like spacing consistent when I handwrite. It's a pain finding an actual font and I handwrite it out of frustration.

Part of me wants to color it like these but I started to feel squeamish.

trhat sounds really interesting
It makes me think about that one comic where the MC is the only one who CAN sleep, but everything goes all weird.. I lost interest after it got a little too weird to care about, but it was really neat up to that point.

Photoshop

MediBang Paint
FireAlpaca

The main use for a map is so you can remember what is adjacent to what, and you don't end up with situations like "hang on, they went from there to there, but they should have passed that other place, instead they went there afterwards"

Kind of. The webcomic I'm working on (really slowly because then I got distracted by the challenges who became an informal webcomic on their own) began because some friends were reading a comic with an always sad Death and a really happy Life who hated Death because "HOW DARE YOU KILL MY STUFF REEEEEEE" and they were all fangirling over it. I found that this Life-Death dynamic was way too common and it was not only tiresome but also didn't make much sense. I joked about Life probably being more angry at the living themselves with how many psycopaths and just bad people exist around and Death being a prankster because of all those "fun stupid ways to die" shows that exist, and so it began.

Not being noticed is pretty easy; you literally don't have to do anything. Simply post it somewhere, ideally your own site and not a webcomic host with a built in social network, and just don't talk about it. Ta da, no views whatsoever.

Talking it up or down is going to get people to click on it through sheer curiosity. Some people might start following it and talking about it, and then your views will start climbing as other people start to discover it.

Here's a fun game for everyone to play: make a tumblr and post art to it, but don't post fan art, or add any tags or tell anyone it exists. Don't interact with anyone who discovers it. See how slowly you can gain likes, reblogs or followers.

How would anyone feel about an elder scrolls web comic? Good idea, bad idea, don't care? I've kinda always wanted to do one for quite a few years now, but never got around to doing it due to laziness, more laziness, and some worried feelings about people not liking the idea in the first place.

>>
>>94547149
To be completely, utterly honest, one of the things that kinda got me off my ass and consider doing it was because of prequel never getting updated and I was like "fuck it, I guess I'll write and draw some shit myself".

I'm not a huge fan of the series, but.. basically, if your comic is trying to make me a fan by showing me the coolest stuff about the setting, I'll enjoy it. If it's relying on me liking the setting already to get the comic, I probably won't

Dupe back from the dead here. My workspace flooded among a bunch of other bad stuff but who cares.

Attempted to redo the thread image to look less embarrassing since I anticipated that one just being used briefly before someone outdid it. Tried a few things here, feel free to suggest changes.

Since a lot of recent threads had little "stickers" on the thread image I made a little place in the corner for that (the exclamation point)

>Since a lot of recent threads had little "stickers" on the thread image I made a little place in the corner for that (the exclamation point)

Oh yeah! It's because it was either that or waiting until the thread got nuked because of 4chan not letting duplicated pics on it so I thought of it as some fun way to also make Editions. Also the threads seemed to get archived more if the pic was an edit like pic related instead of just having the "sticker". Thanks for the consideration.

As for suggestions, maybe it's because I got too used to our usual pic, but the darker yellow-brown tone in the middle looks a bit too, "grey" kinda.

You've grasped some basic concepts quite well, like poses and the weight within panels, but you should get your gutters more consistent i.e. make the panels line up better. In panel 8, it could be more clear that those are "R"s. In panel 11 the speech bubble is on the bottom for absolutely no reason - move your actors down and put it up above.

Otherwise, really good work. I like your art and your designs.
>>
>>94548869
>those are "R"s
I thought they were just stomach-rumble lines. Definitely needs to be more clear if they're meant to be letters!
You know, I see a lot of people getting shit for putting things on a perfect grid, (in fact I think Dewd used to do that, perfect grid with no gutters at all) but I'm with you. Haphazard random panel sizes doesn't look good to me. Varying ones can be good, but they should still be aligned in some way, such as being center-aligned within each row
>>
>>94548547
all the things the old design has
>definite silhouette of the hand and wrist, reads well.
>better proportions, pencil, hand, text

>text is more unified with color
>colors pop
>perfect chunky black lines
>is designed to be viewed as a small thumbnail

The old hand looks like a folded piece of paper and the pencil is bent

Hello, /hyw/. This is a practice webcomic I'm making to teach me about how to draw and draw on the computer. I'm aware of the anatomical errors and am working to fix them in future strips, but I'm more concerned about flow and clarity for this strip.
>>
>>94549063
Bright colors affect visibility for sure, but in a good way. Otherwise we never would have kept this garish color scheme in the first place.
>>
>>94549128
It doesn't have to be photorealistic. It does have to not look like it only makes sense in 2d space. Unless when you hear "Cartoony style" you start thinking of old hanna-barbera and start drooling instead of vomiting.
As ugly as the art in Rocko is, Dan and Swampy know how to draw in 3d.
A hand holding a pencil doesn't have momentum, and there is no reason for the pencil to bend to show it. I don't even know what you mean by wrest, like he's wresting it away from the center of the picture?
>>
>>94549158
That can't have been easy. Pats on the back for you. But to me she already looks better just for her head proportions
I suggest you look up women with massive implants who are naturally thin, since this girl is skinny and has huge tits. Real life examples will only confuse you with the more full-bodied look a woman with tig ol' bitties has.
>>
>>94549281

>>
>>94549350
Ah. I was wondering if the shoe had a mirror for cheating or something or what. They're both wearing jeans, so it's not going to be possible to know just from that shot that it's her shoe, without dialogue. Not unless you change her pants to a different color from his. As it is you barely see her pants in her panel. Maybe if she were looking down herself instead of pointing down and looking at him. That is more of a "your shoes are untied" gesture.

a curved pencil can only exist in 2d? also the pencil in the new design is still curved, just not as drastically.
a hand holding can have momentum if it is moving. but that's besides the point, I didn't mean momentum in the way that it is indicating motion, just that the image itself has momentum the same way an energetic pose looks more interesting than a stiff one.
hanna barbera has many different styles, many of which aren't flat.

While you're work is well wrought in general, I think it's a little busy on the eye. The foreground and the background are both in similar levels of focus. I think simplifying them or distinguishing them would make it a little easier to read. Maybe save the detail for establishing shots
>>
>>94550164
Fire Alpaca is the budget version, since it's free. I don't think it offers many differences from Manga Studio, in fact I think MS has some screentones which FA has like 2 or 3 brushes tops.

Just a short comic idea about a scientist who cryogenetically freezes a selected few to serve as humanity's hope as the apocalypse happens. The scientist has a now deceased daughter who was a cartoonist and makes a PSA short that depicts cartoon animals explaining how the world came to be in memory of her. Each animal would represent a key component for the world's end, but the dialogue of the PSA is very PBS-esque kid friendly.

Ok, so some of the proofreaders Guinea pigs of my comic scripts liked one of the couples in the story. A few of them really want to see them dance or tango. Literally. The problem is I want to avoid romantic cliches like the plague so I don't really want to have a couple dance in my story among other things that you see tons of /co/ couples do. Though admittedly it could be cute.

What are your thoughts? Make them dance or no? And yes, there is plenty opportunity for them to dance (it's supposed to be the '50s jukebox rock and roll America) in instances that won't get in the way of the plot.
