No the movies are shit. Whats worse is that they waste a lot of potential, they have a supervillian as main character but aren't ballsy enough to have him do despicable villiany things, instead they'd rather have him at home being the loving but in over his head dad.

To be fair here, this is talking about a Franchise. Most of the classic great animated films are one-offs. One film that does great would likely gross less than three films that did ok.

The previous record was to Shrek which just kept churning those films out until the well dried. Despicable Me/Minions is following the exact same model.

Nice. I liked DM 1, 2, & 3 but didn't care for Minions.

It felt as if they thought it would be like The Penguins of Madagascar, (where the studio was surprised at their popularity as secondary characters to the other animals in the Madagascar movies so decided to create an off shoot) but with Minions it didn't quite work out that way. Maybe because of the not so subtle fag shit going on in the backgrounds.

>despite the fact that their parents and grandparents always talked about people who didn't return with a hollow voice
>despite entire families dying out
>despite the sheer number of cripples and shellshocked created from the war
>despite the increasingly unusual quirks they got as they grew older, even compared to others
>despite the fact that US soldiers in particular are still vulnerable to the cheap and nasty tricks of war, as seen from everything from Vietnam to the current Middle East debacle

Is this an American thing, to think about war in such a way? It honestly reminds me of pre/early WW1 messages, where everyone was convinced the war was going to be over by Christmas. I know basically no-one is alive to remember the horrors borne out sheer ineptitude and arrogance on both sides, but has Vietnam been forgotten so quickly? Where the best equipped military in the world basically proved that ground troops are extremely ineffective against guerilla tactics? Where they had to resort to airstrikes, agent orange, and all kinds of other excesses just to get people out of holes and trees?

>>94482571

I ignore it. The films genuinely have some funny moments, but at risk of sounding like a BvS apologist revenue means very little in terms of quality for this genre. If a kids movie can get a decent screening slot, be the best kids movie currently showing, and have something to catch attention, it's going to make buck.

That's not saying it isn't good, it probably just doesn't deserve to be the best grossing film franchise ever.

Pixar has made $11B. If they released one more Toy Story movie, it (as a franchise) would probably (inflation adjusted) top DM (and yes, I checked DM's inflation adjusted gross. It really doesn't change much). DM also benefits from 3D.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarf's would adjust to almost one billion, just for DOMESTIC gross. Classic Disney animation, if it was a franchise, would adjust to MORE TICKET SALES than Shrek franchise, DM franchise AND all other Illumination movies, Dreamworks movies COMBINED.

The bulk of the reason these movies are doing so well is due to foreign grosses. Even the 1994 The Lion King still beats any one of the DM domestic releases.

Just goes to further prove that foreigners are the cause of everything wrong with the universe today.

The minions were, initially, a cheap narrative way to have the main character have a horde of followers to help him build and pull off all his plans without having to deal with actual human beings doing all that shit. They also served as quirky comic relief. I doubt they ever really realized how seriously it would tap into the collective autism of the child consumer market, though they sure didn't waste much time cashing in on it. I'm surprised there's not a "Minions of Despicable Me" show yet.
