I don't understand how it's self insert. What like was the writer a therapist? Is that NOT something a therapist might say? Someone who's job is to pick people's brains and tell them how they think their actions affect others?

Rick is extremely intelligent and extremely spiteful. He would do something spiteful like cure shit eating compulsions or make a robot therapist that does her job better to spite her either for psychoanalyzing him or not getting mad when he did his monologue before her's, even if it's mostly correct. That he literally just ignored her and went on his way was completely uncharacteristic and anti-Rick.

By having Rick not respond to it in any way, he's been written out of character just because one of the writers assigned to this episode decided to either make Rick seem deeper or to jerk off a guest star they really like (this happens a lot with shows with guest stars, they jerk the guest star's ego by having them be totally smarter than the standard cast and then never appearing again).

That she is a woman is just happenstance and most people would still think it was bullshit if they had a male actor do this like Patrick Stewart or Bruce Campbell. Hell, a comparable situation is the "Quagmire shits on Brian monologue" from Family Guy, and while everyone believes that Brian as a character needed a new one torn, they chose a random character to issue the tearing.

We get she's a therapist, but Rick, the extremely spiteful individual that he is did nothing in retaliation/response was so out of character that it was quite literally the worst scene in the series.

It was actually a good turnaround from what I expected. When she asked Beth why she thinks he turned himself into a pickle I thought "Oh geeze here we go, hackneyed plot about not believing the weirdness." What we really got was her asking Beth why Rick would do such a thing, doing the Rick and Morty thing and taking the weirdness at face value and running along with it.

People are just mad because the writers took the time to point out that Rick showing the occasional care for others doesn't make him secretly a good person inside. It was already established in season 1 that Rick is an ass because he's in emotional pain. It's pretty canon for him to get BTFO emotionally on account of Birdperson understanding his cries, his breakdown over losing Unity, and now Pickle Rick.

Just watched the episodes, i think the the psychiatrist managed to help rick and beth get along, her analysis of rick was simply that he couldn't stand mundane tasks and knew exactly what would happen when he got to the psychiatrists, and that may have helped him better understand beth, not nessasarily him.
But she still fucked up because it was meant to be a FAMILY session and both her kids were pretty much ignored and are being ignored now

The whole point, which Beth and Rick joked later, was that Beth thought the school-required session was gonna be about Morty pissing himself and Summer huffing. She's a dangerously shit character. Dangerous because of how she is shit - she is the first character in the show that isn't somehow inherently a joke, and her entire purpose seemed to be to deliver that monologue to Rick, which was a totally unique first-of-its-kind total defeat for him. Ricks characterization in the first part of the episode (up to being in the sewer) was also pretty off-character.

The episode overall was very weak, probably the worst in the series so far, mostly due to this totally wasted, zero-humor b-plot, but even the Pickle Rick a-plot had serious (easily preventable) flaws. They clearly had a lot of great material in mind for the a-plot which they just didn't give the time it deserved.
