The problem is that it only took twenty years for Jedi to become stuff of myths and legends with The Force reduced to "sorcerer's ways" despite, according to the PT, Jedi and Force-sensitives being very well known and fairly commonplace throughout the entire galaxy in almost every culture for millennia. The speed at which the Empire managed to seemingly wipe out all knowledge and evidence of the Jedi and Force in only two decades doesn't add up.

People basically believed in the Jedi because obviously they were important figures in the most important events in recent history (the Clone Wars and the formation of the Empire) but they weren't entirely sure what they were. Like imagine if someone told you the Mujahedin had superpowers and used to lift Soviet tanks with their minds during the war in Afghanistan along with mind tricking the pilots and forcing them to crash the plane on 9/11 and not only that but 9/11 was the only way to prevent some crazy event that would have resulted in a nuclear holocaust so Osama Bin Laden was really a good guy all along. They would sound fucking crazy and that's why when people tried to say that the Jedi could use magic powers or that the Jedi were the good guys people treated them like a retard. Like the Mujahedin, their existence isn't outrageous, it's simply a fact of history. The outrageous thing would be that someone is trying to convince you that they were the good guys or that they used magic.

So I'm thinking Rebel Mission to Ord Mantell may have had some input from Lucas (and may be partially recanonized by the new comics) because canonically the Rebellion had only been on Hoth for a month and in the audiodrama Luke and Han are diverting the Empire's attention while the Alliance moves all their supplies to Hoth when Han encounters a bounty hunter on Ord Mantell. This was obviously meant to be shortly before ESB because the quote in ESB implies that this encounter happened not long ago.

Basically I half expect the whole 'Han encounters a bounty hunter on Ord Mantell a month before ESB while trying to divert attention away from the Rebel's move to Hoth' story concept to possibly be from George and therefore still canon.

It's not canon. If they ever make mention of Han encountering a bounty hunter on Ord Mantell it won't be anything like that, especially given that Ord Mantell exists in canon thanks to TCW and has been changed to suit Lucasfilm intent. That's no more canon than any EU work that based off something in a film, many of which have been retconned by TCW and Rebels.

Color is a fun thing. There've been entire online wars waged over whether Han's hoth jacket is brown or blue.

For the record the actual jacket was brown, but due to ESB's heavy blue filtering on Hoth it looks dark blue. So the debate ended up being whether the Hoth Han toys should depict it with the prop-accurate brown color or the screen-accurate dark blue.

I think it's only gotten worse since NuCanon. Before things had settled into a kind of groove where obviously the really early shit like Splinter and the Marvel stuff just kind of didn't count, and Heir to the Empire was the start of the "real" EU. But then TCW was overwriting it but the people bitching were clinging to stuff that specifically overwrote old stuff so most people just laughed at mandofags and just kind of shrugged at the retarded continuity snarl that was Dathomir(which had to exist as four separate planets with four separate groups of force witches because of mutually exclusive details). The really big autists had either moved on or been hired like Pena and were trying to sort it out officially, so the fans kind of didn't care. There was enough shit by that point that you built up a tolerance and stayed in your corner.

The moment NuCanon was declared though that shit went out the fucking window. Declaring it all super duper canon and equal reignited every single argument since now every individual measurement and feature and ship model must be checked against every other one. Which sounds good until you realize Filoni and co. have to shit out weekly episodes so you get stuff that plain doesn't make sense like Light Cruisers suddenly sprouting missile launchers and an invisible hangar bay in one episode that never shows up again, or that Abrams didn't care at all so the Lynchpin of the franchise doesn't match the pacing or details every other piece of work does. It's only been a few years but the LSG is basically shrugging already and saying that sure, it's all canon, but not literally writ and enshrined, which is what canon fucking means. So I'm reading Heir to the Empire and I honestly believe that people that hate nucanon Thrawn are just EU bandwagoners who liked 'blue guy who fights the New Republic and doesn't afraid of anything'. People complain about Thrawn getting angry but he literally does the exact same thing when he meets Jorrus. They complain about him appearing stupid when in the very first chapter of HttE he uses a novice tactic that makes him look stupid as fuck but ends up putting the enemy off guard with it and killing them.

Also Zhan mentions that the Bothans simply found out the location of the DS-II which is something that took the rest of the EU nearly 30 years to get.

I actually think Thrawn is not only possibly the best canon book, but it's definitely Zahn's best.

Honest to God, some of them don't.

I mentioned this little story a few months ago, but one day in 2015, I was at the comic store picking up the new Star Wars comics, and my friend started complaining about Disney "cancelling" the EU. This guy had never read an EU comic or book in his life, and he didn't even play any of the vidya outside of TFU.

What was happening was that he was trying to appeal to what he felt was the most vocal "correct" opinion from a "true" fan. He knew I was a big fan who did admittedly enjoy the EU, so he just assumed that I hated the new stuff, and tried to fit in/appeal to me that way.

I largely suspect a lot of EUfags are like this. They're people who maybe enjoyed very minor corners of the EU, and fell out of the loop of Star Wars. They never really got back into the series, but feel the need to join the crowd that says that their Star Wars is the "true" Star Wars, and the new stuff must be shit, because this makes them feel like they're still a "true" fan.

As far as I am concerned, if you really did enjoy Star Wars all their life, what happened in 2014 should NOT have stopped you from continueing to enjoy Lucasfilms new Canon. I have done so just fine, and I have not seen this "Canon is shit, EU was objectively better" sentiment reflected in the new stuff at all. The only major duds have been TFA, Aftermath, and Battefront. But those are minor greivances compared to some of the comparable low points of the EU, and the difference is Canon actually has a lot more to offer going forward too. All smiles from me.

The two continuities thing just wouldn't work. Besides the fact that there wasn't much left for the EU to do, as most-if-not-all of the important stuff had been wrapped up, you also have to accound for the writers.

You'd be splitting writers up to continue a continuity that had like 50+ books in it, and then leaving some other wirters to continue a continuity that had a grand total of zero canon books in 2014.

Then you have to consider what Lucasfilm (and the writers!) actually WANTED. Did they want to continue in the broken, inconsistent, mediocre EU timeline, or contribute to the "official" timeline thats got the cross-continuity oversight of Lucasfilm, the new movies and cartoons, ect?

It seems like a no brainer to me. Sure some fans will be upset, but it just seems obvious to me that the majority of people involved would prefer working on Canon anyways.

Having several actually survive Order 66 is implied in ROTS anyway, since Sheev announces that any remaining Jedi will be hunted down. Yoda and Obi-Wan's adventure into the temple also makes it clear that while they don't know of any survivors, they think it's reasonable to assume that if they survived others may have as well.

Like if you actually pay attention to what's happening in ANH and then listen to everything Obi-Wan and Yoda tell Luke about the Emperor in the other movies it's so blatantly obvious what happened. Is this just the 'stormtroopers suck at shooting because Tarkin explicitly tells them not to shoot the Rebels in ANH' amplified to 100?

I don't know about you guys, but even in my youth, I had trouble accepting that the EU was 100% canon to the movies. I always treated them as separate storylines or "what if" scenarios, and I think it was even well publicized at the time that only the movies or things that had George Lucas's direct involvement were absolute canon. I
had this reaffirmed several years later when I read Death Troopers and thought it was so ridiculous to imagine that Han Solo and Chewbacca actually fought a bunch of zombies right before A New Hope happened.

So that said, when the canon purge happened, I was kind of thinking like "yeah, what did you expect?" None of it seemed like a surprise to me, yet I saw absolute tsunamis of tears as if Disney literally burned everyone's personal copies of the books.

I don't see any problem with former Jedi taking jobs as someone who has to be a competent fighter. I agree with drugs part though. Star Wars is a very flexible universe where you could fit all sorts of stories just by taking an existing one and adding Star Wars flavor on top of it, but in that universe edginess simply does not work.

I think it's more an issue of people not being able to enjoy fanfiction while understanding it's not what happened. I love certain things from the EU, but I understand it's not what happened. Some people can't handle that.

Bullshit, it can be maintained with enough care and effort.

There's nothing wrong with consistency, it just means the events and developments of one story can directly affect another. It's rewarding for fans. Strong continuity is something sci-fi fans always itch for in every franchise, Star Wars is no different. And the level of continuity in the Star Wars Canon is what I always dreamed of.

When nobody cares about the Canon, then nothing is canon and any development or event can be ignored and brushed away, and that led to some of the most frustrating and annoying shit in the EU.

Thankfully, both Lucasfilm and the fans seem to care a lot, which is why the Canon is being repectfully shaped into a cohesive and enjoyable experience. I love being able to watch Rebels, read Catalyst, and then watch Rogue One and see al the cogs fit together perfectly.

Video games are really hard to fit into canon in Star Wars. The reason for this is because video games and especially action games, by their very nature, exist to empower the player, make you go from nothing to hugely powerful, and have the whole universe revolve around you. It works perfectly for a game and anything otherwise would feel very underwhelming from a gameplay standpoint. The problem is that trying to work this into an overarching continuity doesn't work, because now you have this godlike, all-powerful Force user that has no impact on the rest of the saga somehow.

Technically it's still part of the Legends continuity, for what it's worth. The EU started working with and/or around TCW towards the end, so removing TCW info would also require removing other EU stuff. They basically can't remove it without it affecting a lot of the post-2008 era stuff.

BF2 seems to be handling it pretty well. You're not a Gary Stu force God in it. You're just a spec ops soldier, so it seems appropriate for you to be going on missions and fighting against dozens of Rebels.

You also get to play as Luke/Kylo breifly, and based on what we have seen of those characters in the Dice games, they just have the traditional abilities you'd expect of a Jedi. Running, jumping and force pushing, ect.

I highly doubt there will ever be something on the scale of TFU in canon, where you can effortlessly force lightning a hundred stromtroopers just because its cool.

Filoni's idea was actually always supposed to be closer to what Rebels is now. (The Twilight is some evidence of this, it was originally going to be more like the Ghost)

Ultimately, the settings work best for each type of show. Rebels is about a small Rebel Cell that is basically a family, whereas TCW was about the grand stories of heroes and villains across an entire Galaxy in the peak of its wartime.

I don't watch Rebels or have seen the last season or two of TCW but I liked the Obi Maul fight.
I saw it the day after on YouTube and I liked that they showed some self control there. The fight was entirely emotional and brought Maul's character arc full Circle.
