Interesting that you mention Hey Arnold and the drop of Iggy. That character was literally dropped for being too insufferable, for being too much of a asshole, which is a far cry from what's happening here. The characters on Arnold had a certain, likable humanity to both themselves and their respective roles. Helga, for instance, is one of the most well written animated characters I've seen.

You learn to hate her, then you learn to sympathize after discovering her dreadful family life, then ultimately you appreciate her character far more than you do Arnold. That's the biggest difference between older cartoons and virtually everything released past 2005. Virtually every protagonist with a handful of exceptions (TCW is one) is a raging asshole. Loud House in particular, shows us some particularly loathsome characters who never receive comeuppance or justice for their terrible behavior. Instead you're meant to sympathize with them despite doing anything but.

Lori is a adulterous whore who forces her own brother into a abusive relationship, Luan uses her family as a means to make her sadist fantasies a reality, Lynn is a nasty bully who beats on Lincoln for fun in addition as a outlet for anger (it's pretty telling both popular ships are abusive in nature), and Lisa? She experiments on her own family just to get every little bit of scientific data she can. Hell, Lincoln is often portrayed as a slimy personification of greed who often brings upon his own doom... Even the silent placeholders give the characters nothing but mockery and petty cruelty.

This is a immense change from the likable kids from HA and goes to show how we're starting to develop a nasty, paranoid view of people where we expect everyone to be cruel and vile. Turning on us on the drop of a hat, like Clyde frequently does. All with a pleasant, cartoon environment that disguises the absolutely vile protagonists. Which also symbolizes the modern outlook to a extent.
