Have them do something that isn't just assigning character traits and disjointed backstory because those don't really mean anything if those characters aren't doing anything. You can't actually make a character without a story. Without the story they're just a random collection of ideas.
If it's episodic create an episode of their adventures.
It's not so much making a villain as making a story for them to play a role in.
Then after you have the rough story, go back and shop it to become a tighter story.
Take those character ideas and try to use them to flesh out the story, discard the ones that don't work, create new ones that will work well with the story, etc.

But again that's not what these threads were ever really about.
