The problem is they tried their best to make the story they wanted to tell within the number of episodes they were alloted, rather than trying to tell the story that would best fit in the same number of episodes. The cramped pacing really affected the quality of the arc in a bad way, and the ending was incredibly unsatisfying and undermined a lot of not only the final season, but the entire series before it.
