Apparently during an interview that was released shortly after Bowie's death, he was only inserted last minute to boost ratings up (and because Bowie wanted to satisfy his daughter, who was really into SpongeBob). It still doesn't change the fact that the episode sucks, but it adds context as to why this strange decision was made.

The real crime is when they got Johnny Depp in one of the episodes and did nothing with him. In general the newer episodes, like the Simpsons, suffer from bringing in way too many guest stars and becoming bloated as a result. I swear, in a recent season 10 episode they literally had JK Simmons voice a random character in a random episode for absolutely no reason. It's jarring and I wish they used those extra SpongeDollars to make the episodes actually entertaining.
