God, I'm not sure if this is the right reference or the picture I saw before, but the haircut Ditko originally drew was supposed to be a wavy sort of deal that was popular with business-men at the time (I think).

Thing is, nobody really got that and every artist afterwards just exaggerated the style more and more until it looked like cornrows.
