Somewhat have, somewhat haven't yet.

The show still makes some good episodes, but I feel as if the writers don't want to grow Gumball as a character and try to make him like he was in Season 1 and give him a personality that makes him look selfish and cynical (The Ex, and The Apprentice are major perpetrators of this). Also the writers don't know what to do with Anais to grow her character other than finding a friend only to have Gumball and Darwin be skeptical about the friend. They pulled this off twice. Along with that, they rehashed The Hug in the same damn season. To be honest, I feel like they can do more if they explore more with supporting characters without much Gumball in the actual episode. Penny, Carrie, Darwin, even some others such as Tobias and Alan should have some episodes based on themselves instead of focusing incredibly on Gumball and the Watterson family as a whole.

The problem is that they want to give Gumball that sense of naivety back when he was innocent and nice, just doing stuff to have fun. They want to place that naivety back into Gumball, but they only make him look irrational and careless. Gumball ain't nice and innocent anymore, he's just a douche nozzle who only cares about what he wants to care about, completely unaware of his surroundings or how others feel, contradicting his character development in The Shell.

I feel the main thing writers focus on are creative visuals. Every episode in S5 (as far as I can remember) had some new spectacle going on. I think its for the best. Gumball is animation and they should do as much as they can with that. As for supporting characters, I just hope they don't become like Adventure Time where S6 was almost entirely side characters

I'm kind of terrible at paying attention to every line of dialogue in any given episode of a TV show, so the first time I watched that episode, I'm pretty sure I only heard the "mistake potion" part of that exchange and interpreted it as a joke about birth-control pills.

I liked it better when the episodes focus on the school or the Watterson household. I think the kid characters have better personalities, and are more interesting to look at than the townies in Elmore.
