And then later other transitions happened for stupid reasons.

Look, all of the old CartoonCartoon's that they had built their network on for the past 5 years or so were ending. Even the late-comers. And the only thing they had to follow up were such run-away hits as Squirrel Boy, Class of 3000, and My Gym Partner's a Monkey. "Old CN" was gone no matter how you looked at it. CN continued making and airing cartoons in the same vein throughout the time (Chowder, Flapjack) and tried to add in a bunch of action shows to appeal to an older, tween male audience (Star Wars Clone Wars, The Secret Saturdays, Transformers Animated, Ben 10: Alien Force). These ranged from "medium for a brand name" to "ratings disaster."

CN Real was a failed attempt to re-tool a struggling network It hardly helped, but it can't really be blamed for the decline. It wasn't until Adventure Time that CN's daytime progrmming stopped treading water.

They might have been in a better position if invested their funds in new/better cartoons rather than in live action flops.

The live action shows may have been relatively cheaper, but they ate up tons of valuable air time, and when Cartoon Network had to scrub all of them off of the schedule, they weren't left with a whole lot to fill the void they left.

This, pretty much. If not for the Boston bomb scare, Stu Snyder likely would've never been put in charge of CN, and everything bad that has happened to the network since then is a direct result of Snyder's initial attempts to rebrand the network and turn it into a Nickelodeon clone. Both CN and [adult swim] suffered from that changeover, as [as] started moving toward live-action comedies and away from the animated originals, anime, and non-MacFarlane shows that initially made [as] a success.

The Boston bomb scare destroyed Cartoon Network. Plain and simple.
