The MCU isn't perfect by any means and a lot of the criticism is valid, like the lack of good villains, but I'm glad it exists. There have been a lot of good to great movies in the franchise.

While it's true that Afghanistan isn't in the middle east, the era during and following the gulf war reshaped mainstream perception of what constitutes "the middle east", possibly due to some destabilization but more likely because of lack of geographical awareness in the 80s (education wasn't top notch in the states). The term lost it's rigidity and began being used as far east as asian countries like India, stretched north into some caucasus Eurasian countries like Georgia, and west into African countries like Egypt... Geographically? obviously it is incorrect, but the 80s news media made the incorrect information "colloquially correct" (that is, enough people think it's true, therefore it by proxy is "true", like how misnomers become popular). It got a little better in the 2000s during the Iraq War, but not by much.

tl;dr American education system is so lax that false geography is accepted as "probably correct enough" and old people don't bat an eye.
