I read through this thing once to writer an essay about LGBT comics that want to write a gay utopia but throw in limp wristed attempts at an oppression story line like this one.

I never got it done because I wanted more examples but got too busy to research. Another example being As the crow flies.

There's a part where the principal says "no more gay. stuff our school is getting a reputation" but that doesn't really amount to anything either. I don't have those pages saved though.

I wouldn't mind if they wanted to write a utopian world where this much gay stuff in a small area was normal but they also seem to want to have this half-ass oppression thrown in and it seems rather weak. Give them regular challenges.

yeah hell back in the day Will and Grace made a joke about every book in a gay book store being all coming out stories. A big problem I have with these stories is that all of them only focus on the gay like it makes them unique. We live in a world now with a lot of gay stories but a lot of them hit the same stories beats.

The writing is legitimately bad but I don't have a problem with the 1950s setting. Gay people are strongly restricted to where they can set their historical fiction and still have their characters end up happy (though AFAIK this is all done by a straight white girl). There's modern times and basically nothing else, and I'm pretty sure there are lots of gay people who are tired of coffee shop romances.

What I think is unrealistic is the main gang is composed of "outcasts" of society when my experiences have taught me those outcasts can hold some pretty nasty prejudices themselves, which is where I guess the whole "black girl can't come into the secret lesbian club" thing came from.
