Wow way to take an interesting looking character and turn her into a generic racial pawn to serve the sad fantasies of Tumblr race baiters.
>>
Not even close to her comic uniform. Idc about her race, just why couldn't they get her costume right? Fucking hell.
>>
>>94365373

What really pisses me off is not the race issue so much it's pretty clear that the actress just doesn't want to wear the make up.

Chalk white may have rubbed people wrong but you could have gone the grayish blue she's sometimes drawn as and ditched the fro. I think people wouldn't complain so much if they at least tried ot meet the character half way.

This is like not having Hellboy show up as a human because the make up is to much or Mystique not be blue because...oh wait.

You cast the actor that suits the role and that means make up and changing your appearence if need be
>>
>>94365522
I will. I get excited about black superheroes. It doesn't really matter the context. I want heroes that look like me. I don't know why that makes me racist. I like War Machine and Falcon, even if they get generic writing.
>>
>>94365449
Its even dumber because she's supposed to be half east indian. So there is literally no bonus for the blsckwashing of an indian actress, a group with minimal hollywood representation

>>
>>94365873
Nope. I'm not a troll, I'm being genuine. I've read both Domino mini series. Nothing in there changes with a race-swap. Nothing. There is no sacrosanct angle of the character that is being violated other than design. I hope you can understand when I say that vitiligo acceptance is very very new in the black community, there is actually some external significance to this choice that resonates strongly with me. It's better than the frankly rapey content of v1.

Fucking couldn't have said it better.

Make her any fucking race. Just make it domino. You have the one character who you could make look authentic with any actor and good makeup team and you chose not to because why...?

So we can get an afro on screen. Because it's internet controversy and therefore hype. Feeding the feud because it boosts coverage of your movie on Salon and Buzzfeed. I know this is a business, and the art is always going to come second to that. But this just feels so fucking disappointing.

They've got her out of costume because it beats the drum of racial justice. Like this movie is on some kind of quest for Cinematic justice on and off screen. Studios used to spend millions and millions babysitting talentless filmstars to get the same kind of publicity for a movie. Now you can just buy those column inches by pimping out someone's racial diversity. It's not about casting black actors it's about generating a fucking squeak in the messy din of press hype.

It's a fucking stunt.

see, I never got that. Actors "pretend" to be other people or beings on the screen, that is a fact. Many great actors has dressed up/down or worn body-make up, shaved their hair, etc.
If you don't wanna do that - IE, play dress up/play pretend on screen - then why even become an actor?

Jennifer Lawrence set a bad example
She said she didn't want to wear the mystique makeup because she thought it would give her cancer or some shit, so they keep making her wear it less and less.
Actors that are attached to a guaranteed success that know it's their chance to have their face be super well known are going to fight claw, tooth, and nail to prevent it.

Ryan Reynolds is already super famous, he doesn't need to worry about the makeup stuff. Besides, flashbacks mean he's got scenes without it.

It's not just women, it just happens to occur more often with women because they're more paranoid about their looks in relation to their career.

The same thing was why Stallone's dredd took off the helmet so much (same with garfield's peter parker)
It's about visibility, and an actor's fear of not being recognized.
>>

I'm really, really upset they turned Domino into another fucking black woman.

I mean sure, once or twice but how many is this? Isn't the new Iron Man black woman look exactly like her too?

What is it with this year and adding black woman and black woman with that specific skintone and hairstyle? You should have seen E3 this year over on /v/

Blame Americans. They think only black people count as a different culture, and because they're trying to make them as appealing as possible they go with the safe look.

>>
>>94377853
Free publicity for them, that was a smart move on their part regardless of it's quality.
>>
She doesn't stand out as Domino. I wouldn't even have known that was the character she was playing if they hadn't said so. Nothing about her costume or look in general is the character. It's not some minor character that changed like NTW. This is a character with a ton of history and a distinct look. The vitilago is a nice touch but it still doesn't say "HEY THIS IS DOMINO"

She looks like she should be in a sequel to Wanted or Smokin Aces

>imagine being white and represented in tons of video games but still getting upset about the occasional black person with a fro appearing that you mask your insecurity as some sort of conspiracy

>>94377980
It's a concious push for being politically correct, they're not doing this because they happen to want a black character. People generally don't like being forced any agendas, and this isn't being subtle about it so of course people complain. There are many people they could include that aren't black or white American, in fact most of the world isn't either and yet that's what keeps being pushed all the time.

Blacks just aren't good for movies or TV Shows. If a movie has a black main character, nine outta ten times it's going to do poorly in the States and even worse in the Foreign Market. Everyone right now needs to try and appeal to the Chinese. The best way to do this is to remove or have as little as possible of a black/brown/tan raced people in them.

Its probably why they did this for Domino. Lightest brown, giant negro afro from the 70's to appeal to the Chinese ideal of what blacks are.

As usual it'll end up not mattering. The acting & directing talent involved are what will make or break this character, not her race.

Idris Elba cast as Heimdall turned out to be a great choice, because Elba is a kickass actor. The movies exist in their own continuity, so unless the character's race is vitally important to the story then acting talent should take priority.

Even the 2015 Fantastic Four movie passed off making Johnny black by saying Sue was adopted, and that was the end of it. Not a big deal.
>>
>>94382464
and f4ntastic failed for all kinds of reasons like script, directing, etc . . ..
>>
if marvel wanted to racebend domino, they should have gotten someone with darker skin. that way the white would have really popped.
>>
>>94381769
It is based on why something happens. Is it the result of "This character is black because we wanted a black character" or is it "this character is black because we need to check a box".

It matters if the character is defined by more than their race. It matters if it fits within the setting. And it matters if it makes sense in context.

Putting black female nazis in the trenches of WW2 does not make sense.

Having black people in a Resident Evil game set in Africa does make sense.

Here's the thing. People have said, flat out, that Domino would be okay if portrayed by an asian woman. So it isn't a matter of "a white character being not white". It is about a character not looking like their comic counterpart.

Having Storm being played by a white person doesn't work. Having her being played by a Latina MAY work.
>>
>>94379027
I find them deeply arousing.
>>
>>94382464
>As usual it'll end up not mattering. The acting & directing talent involved are what will make or break this character, not her race.
Yeah just like it didn't matter that Sony made a ghostbusters movie with an all-female cast. No one cared then, right?

>Idris Elba cast as Heimdall turned out to be a great choice, because Elba is a kickass actor.
AND Elba's acting certainly saved the Dark Tower movie didn't it?

>The movies exist in their own continuity, so unless the character's race is vitally important to the story then acting talent should take priority.
The character's race matters within the context of the source material. If you adapt a white character with respect to that character, then their race should remain the same. No exceptions. Adaptation does not mean "making arbitrary changes to suit an agenda". If you're using an existing source as fuel for a film, then you should use that source. USE it. Not half-ass it because social politics favors something else.

>Even the 2015 Fantastic Four movie passed off making Johnny black by saying Sue was adopted, and that was the end of it. Not a big deal.
I can't believe you're seriously using Fant4stic as an argument. I Just can't believe it.

I don't like black people hair. Take it as racist or bigoted if you will, but that's how I feel. Black people hair in its natural state is greasy, knappy, and odorous. Afros aren't sexy to me. They may look stylish within the context of the 1970s, but that time has long since past.

I like smooth, silky, long, flowing hair that smells like fruit and soap. Clean, well-kept hair. That's simply not what afros are.

No, it comes down to who whines the hardest. #OscarsSoWhite was the most organized campaign of whining yet, so it's only natural they got results. Pasty white nerds whine, but their whines are contained on the internet and thus are far too "quiet" to affect any real changes.
