Was gonna comment on that. It just blows my mind how little self-awareness you'd have to possess to think Cap being political is some kind of brand new thing.

Lots of back-pedaling from those people, "yeah well that doesn't count" or "it's different now!", especially "well those comics didn't chastise you for not agreeing with them", as if the current ones somehow were.

Also I haven't read it yet but apparently the new Green Arrow issue is about Lex Luthor and Trump, surprised I haven't seen a big uproar about it.

Hello storyteller. So last 2 issues of Superman were weird to I say the least. Ireally don't know what Tomasi wants to achieve with all the flag waving in Superman comic, don't understand where he got the idea that people actually want to see this stuff in a Superman comic. Are there really a lot of people who want Superman to be a mascot of America anymore and want him to represent American exceptionalism? I don't know, it just seems like book is trying to invite criticism on a lot of levels.

I am not into a lot of current Marvel but a good half of that is "whatever, fine, this just isn't for me and that's great because it's clearly for someone else", and the other half is craft/execution that you can't talk about on Twitter without 2/45 tags on it
>>
>>94364380
Don't think so. Also it disappoints me that President Luthor never amounted to much. It was under hack editorial that just threw out the idea and then not a single talented writer said "wow that's a really good concept, let me do something interesting with that."
>>
>>94364407
But I HAVE to bitch about stuff I don't like, because I never actually read comics. I just take various panels out of context so I can make threads whining about how the SJWs are taking away my comics that I don't read.

>>
>>94364380
With Lex being sort of a hero right now I don't think they really folded in old stuff with him even with Reborn.
>>
>>94364275
It's mainly just a 4th of July special, I think. But I don't think it's really about exceptionalism in particular, just that "truth, justice and the American way" will ALWAYS be an inextricable part of Superman, so instead of just downplaying the American part they want to show that by "American" he's referring to a set of values that has nothing to do with politics or the American government, but rather just the idea of optimism and love for your fellow man.

Like Captain America, you're never going to separate Supes from the concept of the USA, so it's better to just own that aspect of it.

Yeah, these characters have a universality to them now more so than ever. In Civil War movie, the act of Steve giving up his shield, the symbol of America in so many ways, says so much to audiences internationally. It's like that American mascot just doesn't not want to represent those outdated ideologies. For Tomasi to then preach about the American way in Superman just seems very dumbfounded when we contextualize what the social state currently is and how these characters represent so much more.

You know, yes, you are absolutely onto something there and let's try to unpack it. I think there's this conflation of the 'female audience' with the 'young adult/all-ages audience' that's probably not unconnected to that happening in book publishing, too--everyone I know of who says "I only/mainly read YA" is female, it's a huge female market, etc. But it leaves those of us who don't give a fuck about teenies and are borderline on early 20s quirksters with thin takings.

>>
>>94364444
Well said. I think Marvel could curb a lot of criticism if they did what DC has been doing with imprints lately. Put stuff like Squirrel Girl, Gwenpool, Benis Spider-Man and Moon Girl in an "all-ages" imprint. People maybe feel less "threatened" if all that stuff they don't like is clearly labeled as such. Have a line for people who want old superheroes, one for people who want new ones, and one for people who maybe don't like superheroes that much at all.

But then how could they force a comic like Ms.Marvel with a large and growing casual reader base to drop off when she gets put on hold for a big company crossover they don't give a shit about? And then confuse them when they have to buy #1 again, but it's different

>>94364506

Why don't "women" like shoujo/josei/bl stuff there? Like if Marlel wants to pander to women, release some stuff like that, not just YA garbage.
>>

See, if we're using DC comparisons based on subject matter then Gwenpool is YA/HB, Miles would be Rebirth, and Squirrel/Moon Girls would be no proper line but clearly separate kids stuff like Scooby Doo. The books that make people mad aren't even all the same kind of thing.

Maybe that's the biggest problem though, Marvel hasn't committed to any kind of real direction. Why DON'T they have structured lines?
>>
>>94364680

Thinking about it, Raina Telgemeier is probably having a huge effect that we're all overlooking and Marvel wants to catch that wave.

also it seems like they keep doing these kinds of books with new people who don't seem to want to tackle a heavy thing in their first comic out? most people don't get the TNC 12 issue arc guaranteed thing. (weird example but first i jumped for). Plus who are they looking for, someone from webcomics like Ryan North has a different writing style than a novelist or tv writer.

And comics in general is hard up for, i dunno, serious stories?

i do wanna say i think /co/ overstates the women books from marvel a little, like Thor, Hawkeye, Ms Marvel, Hulk all have different tones. There's that subset that Ms Marvel and Squirrel Girl started that's the thing

Also worth considering is scholastic market. I know DC Superhero Girls sold a lot there last year and stuff like Moon Girl and Squirrel Girl sells there too.
>>
>>94364680
I mean, as many women AND men have been saying, all you really need to appeal to women, assuming they're already interested in superhero stories in the first place and not just wanting slice of life or teenie shit, is to 1) put some women in who are not other characters' love interests and 2) don't draw them like Liefeld, and even the latter is not a deal breaker.

There's a difference between "making comics for women" and "making comics that aren't not for women". You don't have to put females off into their own separate ghetto with their own special comics just for them.

>>94364747
King has an incredible talent for writing issues that stand on their own, even if they're really a chapter of an overarching narrative.

This is kind of a lost art in comics and the only other writer I can think of who's doing it is Priest right now. King has even spoken in the past about how that's the kind of thing he wants to bring back to comics.

For comparison, you know how most novels are just chapters continuing on from each other? That's most comics. What King tries to do is like a novel where each chapter may be from a different character's perspective or tell a completely different part of the story, you could hand someone just one of those chapters cut out from the book and they'd be able to enjoy it, but when read all together in sequence they tell a bigger story.

Admittedly, his Batman run doesn't nail this nearly as often as Grayson did, which I'm gonna blame on being bimonthly, but overall I've enjoyed almost every issue on an individual level, it's just when taken together as a single story that they don't feel as robust.

>>94364890
Banners are probably a better idea, but Gwenpool, Moon Girl and Squirrel Girl single issue sales are already in the shitter so

You do if you're in marketing. Seriously, marketers are autistic as fuck when it comes to demographics. Everything MUST remain in its own little box because the chart said so.

Remember Bravely Default? That JRPG Square Enix made a while back, and was actually surprised it was successful? Yeah, market "researchers" are fucking retarded.

King's Batman frustrates me so much.

One issue will be good, the next will be shit, the arc overall will be a bad idea executed okayish, the next arc will be an pretty good idea executed terribly or at least completely boringly.

He's like Snyder or Bendis where he feels like he has to try so hard and get out of his comfort zone, and it ends up being mediocre to crap.

Like fuck, I wish Batman could just be smaller scale stories. Morrison, Snyder, and now King have all tried to CHANGE BATMAN F O R E V E R, and most of their shit has fallen flat for me.

Yeah. They just don't get attention at all.
IIRC there's an Iron Fist one that got announced but they announced it on a Thursday, the day after it got released digitally. During SDCC. So yeah.
DC at least has Bombshells, Injustice, and Smallville Season 11 as successes from a digital line, because I don't think marvel has any.

>>94365388
>I wonder whether Marvel or DC will be the first to just skip the single issues for one of these series and got straight to trade.
Superhero Girls is this and I am curious if DC will do more like that. The problem is they probably wouldn't feel like pushing it and people wouldn't know it came out if it didn't come out every month. Especially if they did it with a literally who like Hellcat.

Any happy well adjusted character?

I guess the question is mostly whether they'd want to split him up or just start a volume with his first issue.
