It's really interesting because it's not made clear if the aliens were lying to Taskmaster or not, if they were just making something up out of desperation (they did attack first) or were sincere, or if there'd be a catch. Similarly, it's unclear why Taskmaster lied about what they said; whether he simply didn't trust them, didn't care, didn't want to do 'good and only good', or he simply didn't trust the other Hydra Avengers with the power (pointing out the irony of the conversation earlier). It's really well done, leaving us with a ton of questions about both the aliens and Taskmaster's morality.

I don't think it's out of character for Task if we don't know why he did it; I can see reasons someone like him would.

Personally I think Englehart ruined them by trying to make them the perfect couple with perfect babies and constantly telling us Vision was completely human in every way. Marriage wasn't the problem, but Englehart wanted them to be a couple with no real marital problems.

Byrne thought he was fixing this by wiping Vision's mind and wiping out the kids, but it's Byrne, every "fix" he comes up with makes things worse. He wasn't wrong that they needed some conflict to make them viable characters again though.

Byrne wasn't trying to "make them viable" or "give them problems", he tried to utterly destroy Vision as a character, and to a large extent, he succeeded.

In implying that Wanda was insane to love Vision, he did a lot of damage to her as well, even before what he did to her children, or making her turn evil.

The most obvious sign he wasn't giving them "problems to overcome" is how the reader isn't expected to feel for Wanda losing everything, and how she'll cope, nor for Vision and what's been done to him, we're supposed to feel sorry for Wonderman and his unrequited love.

Englehart may have left everything "too perfect" for them, but he'd virtually retired them at that point, so there was no need for them to have serious relationship drama.

The difference between Squirrel Girl and Scarlet Witch and that Squirrel Girl's book manage to do well in trade form outside of comic shops since the first volume or so usually shows up on Bookscan. Same thing with Ms. Marvel. So they could be propped up by digital and TPB sales.

But it is likely Marvel's antipathy toward Scarlet Witch that's harmed its sales as well.
