They didn't make it "The Sonic Show" and allowed his friends to have screen time, good lines and for Sonic to be wrong in some cases for the sake of entertainment. Also the friendly banter between them is great.

Nothing. The entire show is a circlejerk of self-referential humor, 4th wall breaks and fandom jokes.

Seinfeld - laugh track is still a solid formula and the addition of action and absurdist humor helps counterbalance the dry elements.

Seriously, that's it. It's just a sitcom that doesn't condescend to its audience and allows itself room to breathe instead of being pigeonholed into the genre's formula.

The townspeople are very clearly the producer's humor, just like his self-insert. It kinda works because the crux of the humor is how half-baked his sense of humor is, but it's not up to snuff with the actual writers' content.

Still, the show wouldn't be nearly as dry as it is if he wasn't in charge, so I can't fault him too much.

I liked the bit where all the other villains are gushing over him being a legit threat. But other than that it was really bad.

That's something about Sonic Boom I really like, the heroes and villains being regular people that step into those roles in an almost performative manner. I allows for more scenarios and it's really funny. It reminds me of the old Earthworm Jim cartoon, which I loved, where you had heroes auditioning for sidekick roles and Jim idiolizing some of them for autographs n stuff. It's a great concept. It's also similar to the WB sheep dog and wolf cartoons where they'd punch time cards before going about their task. That layer of artifice to the antagonistic roles makes them more playful and fun.

And I think Sonic basically fails when it gets overly serious. Sure the original games were about animals being turned into robots and Robotnik taking over the planet, but the presentation was very light and not overly dramatic. But SA2 definitely took it far into drama and it took until Unleashed to begin to recover. Sonic Boom the cartoon lives in pretty much the perfect zone of light-hearted comedy.
