In the first place anyone aware that it's happening can consciously resist being induced into trance if they try to and even after you're in trance, you're still in a type of conscious state and would consciously resist anything against your will. That's why it's called suggestion. Hypnosis is more about making your logic about what you should do malleable.

You're talking about overt hypnosis. Covert hypnosis is still a thing though. You can induce trance in someone without them realizing and consenting to it if they aren't incredibly resistant to it and you use a subtle technique. Fuck's sake people go into trance while driving all the god damn time. I think I've seen my entire immediate family and a few friends do that shit at least once. I once went into a trance state while playing DDR (and I got a AA on Freckles while I was fucking at it). As for the taking commands bit, you can phrase shit to be fairly innocuous.

tl;dr You can totally implant hypnotic suggestions on some people without them realizing it, but you were totally right about the hold trance bit.

Fuck's sake I once posted instructions for self hypnosis on /x/ along with a few harmful suggestions disguised as a summoning ritual to trick people into mindfucking themselves. Too bad I bitched out and gave a warning a few minutes later.
