I do hate this kind of "this or that" logic in the show. Like "once we defeat Zarkon, the universe won't need voltron anymore". Why? I'm pretty sure the universe could always use saving, there are more dangers out there than galra. They can go back to Earth but why disband the team? They can focus on other things they're interested in at home but they should be on call and keep informed of what's going on in the universe they swore to protect. And help societies rebuild after the damage the empire caused. I envision them staying paladins for their whole lives, until they get old and find successors

I was reading JP reactions to episodes the other week and one of them said they didn't understand why Shiro thought Keith should be the leader when Pidge is more level-headed and would make better decisions. I've generally been indifferent to leader Keith since it felt more or less like an inevitability but it made me think yeah, they didn't set this up very well. All we know is Red likes when someone earns its trust by showing that they have good instincts and that Black likes a calm, collected, and reliable leader. There are rooms for episode where the Paladins try to earn the respect of the Lions they want. Yeah, I'm still going to wait to see how it plays out and even if they handle it in the worst possible way I will still probably enjoy the show because I don't actually watch it for deep writing or anything, it just gets a little tiresome when any misgivings get dismissed because DotU did it so it doesn't need a proper explanation. I watched DotU as a kid but the team had a different dynamic than what we're working with now and a lot of aspects of the setting have been changed so I expect the show to adjust for that when they include elements from the old show in order for things to still make sense within the current setting. I guess I wasn't very clear in my post, but my takeaway from the reaction wasn't that Pidge would be a better leader than Keith, it was that Shiro's reasoning doesn't make much sense. I know from Josh that Shiro isn't as perfect a leader as he seems so I can surmise that it was a character flaw which allowed his personal bias to cloud his judgement, but that's not as apparent in the show itself, if I didn't already know that info from outside the show then I'm not sure what I'd make of that scene. Personally, I think Allura makes the most sense as leader right now but it's clear we're going to see why that's not the case in S3. I just wish the show had dropped more hints about her insecurities and flaws beforehand so it wouldn't feel like they were specifically trying to justify her less authoritative role.

I disagree. She may be a leader like how Persona 3's leader was Mitsuru while the MC was the battle leader, but to pilot black you need to get with the program as a pilot. Okay, from what we can see during ep1, keith knew shiro and had a great deal of respect for him. We also see that shiro knew keith. Shiro was wearing an instructor's uniform during the show were we see his picture after the "failure" of the kerberos mission. Shiro was probably an instructor who taught keith some shit. shiro would know his potential see keith's flaw. shiro is the type of leader that would know that if keith managed to overcome that flaw, that he would be a great leader. I don't see it as shiro having a flaw, I see it as shiro believing in his friend. Also, now that shiro is gone, "patience yields focus" is gonna be in keith's head a lot. member when he quoted that from shiro and shiro said something like "wow, that really stuck with you huh."

I think that's a much more satisfying answer than a lot of the other ones I've seen in the thread. I hope the show touches on it, but I also hope they do a decent job at integrating Allura into the team because another aspect of my apprehension is that so far we've only seen commander Allura, it's hard to even imagine her interacting with the paladins as a teammate on equal ground rather than as their boss, which is a big part of why I'm hesitant to accept her not being the leader. I'm scared they won't be able to make her new position feel natural, and that the new team dynamic will feel stilted because of it but if they manage to pull it off then it would go a long way towards addressing my complaints. I'll just have to wait and see for now.
