A reasonable explanation would be that Clint wants her to have something good to put on a resume, but fails to realize that in this day and age an internship or working as an assistant to a professor would be a far better choice for work experience or occupational networking.

A dramatic explanation would be that he's trying to keep Ruth busy so she doesn't have time to date. Clint is afraid that Ruth isn't mature enough to recognize and confront a partner's flaws and she'll stick with someone who is bad for her. This fear is based on the fact that Ruth's mother started dating her father during college and deep down Clint is terrified that Ruth is going to go through the same heartache her mother did.

A nonsensical explanation is that Ruth's a goddamn pussy who needs something to toughen her up. Back when Clint was her age he was killing gooks every day and banging Viet whores every night for John Wayne, Jesus Christ, and John Browning. Not even a little bit. Everyone is petty, spiteful, cynical, and mean. It's eternal freshman year for the main cast, which we all know is the least useful year of college. We don't get to the meat of any of their aspirations at all.

The characters are also violent and sometimes defined purely by their sexuality (Ethan, Becky, Daisy, Leslie).
