This is why I can't enjoy western comics in general. There's just too many writers pulling a character in different directions. Most of the time it becomes canon (like OMD) and creates a bigger mess for the next writer.

Why can't we have actual character development, growth and consequences? Ultimate Spider-Man did it so well with Peter's supporting cast developing as much as Pete. Ultimate JJ Jameson eventually discovers how great Spider-Man is and funds Peter's college tuition. The guy did a complete 180 in an understandable and logical way. Was this partially due to Bendis writing Ultimate for so long? I don't know.

I blame Slott for a lot of things but I think this is a problem for western comics in general. You don't really see something like this in manga where there's just a single writer with a clear vision. The story narrative takes a huge dive when you got some new writer try to build upon nearly 30 years of a character.

It really is just a problem with cape comics. There are plenty of Western comics that only ever have a single author and actually progress.

A lot of this could be fixed by having very strict do's and don'ts for every character and editorial keeping writers on a short leash.
But as it stands the only things like that for Spider-Man are "No marriage, no growth, no happiness".

They also need to let heroes age ffs. Half of the popular characters in comics are already ageless immortals or close to it.
And characters like Mayday, Terry, and Dick show that people are willing to accept children or "Children" taking up their parent's mantle when they die or retire.

The notable thing about the story is that Kevin Smith re-wrote Felicia's origin story.

Originally, the reason she became The Black Cat was because she idolized her father and wanted to follow in his footsteps, and do fun thief things for the thrill of it.
Kevin Smith decided that changing her origin to "I got raped by a college boyfriend so I trained really really hard to get revenge against him, but then he died in a car crash or something before I could and I felt empty so I became a cat burglar lol".

This story was largely considered to be the single worst thing anyone has ever put to page in regards to Black Cat.

So Aunt May gets shot by a bullet meant for Peter from one of Kingpin's hired guns and nobody can fix it. Even Doctor Strange is powerless, but he does let Peter talk to May via astral projection.
May tells Peter to just let her go and that she's lived a long happy life and she's proud of the man he's become. A fitting end for the old woman.

But nope.
Peter can't accept it.

So Mephisto shows up and offers him and MJ a deal.
If they give their marriage to him, he'll solve their problem.
So they agree. Nevermind the fact that at this moment in time, MJ is pregnant.
And *Poof*. Mephisto does his thing. Peter and MJ never get married, but they stay together a while. And then I believe when MJ gets pregnant again she miscarries, I don't remember One Moment in Time pissed me off.

So the laundry list of problems amounts to.
